Gareth - I went to the Greenbelt Films of the year talk yesterday and Vic Theisen gave your apologies (and said you hoped to be there next year).

Re: Che - and the Creation of a Style

Managed to see parts 1&2 as a double bill last night (films take a long time to get to West Cornwall) and you are absolutely right. I love it when what many would criticise as a 'slow' film beguiles you and draws you in to its world (even my wife stayed awake for the whole 4+ hours!)

Re: Why Jett and I Have Free Tickets to the Movies

Whilst agreeing with most of the sentiments posted here the thing that intrigues me about this post is that you seem to be saying you got free tickets for walking out on a bad film! I have managed to get free tickets when the cinema has been at fault (e.g. sound leakage from a neighbouring screen) but never because of the quality of the film. Is this something we should be trying more often? I could have saved myself a fortune over the years!

Re: ‘Taken’ aka “We used to outsource these things”

Re Fritz Lang - Over on the 'Underserving Oscars' thread you said "wouldn't a version of 'My Dinner with Andre' starring Kurosawa and Ashby have been great??" I'd been dreaming about a whole series of Directors Dinners films (Kubrik and Tarkovsky!) when I found the next best thing - Fritz Lang Interviewed by William Friedkin! About five years ago (after a decade of rather sporadic film watching while the kids were growing up) I rekindled my love of movies and began to realise what huge gaps I had in my viewing. At about the same time I was introduced to the IMDB by a friend and so I decided the 250 list was a good tool for expanding my film experience and started watching all the ones I hadn't seen. While often amazed at some films being on the list at all (Ratatouille) it has plugged a lot of my viewing gaps, made me watch some films which are now amongst my personal favourites (Ikiru) and discover some little gems (Harold and Maude).

Re: Man on Wire Wins Best British Picture at the BAFTAS

It certainly must be the clear favourite after the GGlobes and Baftas. If you add 'When Harry met Sally' to your list Reiner is arguably the best director of the 1980's. One review of 'The Bucket List' (his latest film) said "On Reiner's Bucket List it would say 'Make one more great film before I die' - unfortunately this isn't it".
We live in hope.

Re: The Film Talk - Part 46 - Best of 2008

I'd really recommend both films - Lola Montes is a heady brew - but so beautiful to look at, and Che has a slow, graceful style that I found hypnotic.

Re: The Film Talk - Part 46 - Best of 2008

According to Lovefilm (no Netflix in the UK!) it's due to be released on DVD over here on Feb 23rd.

Re: The Extraordinary Lola Montes at the Belcourt Theatre Here in Nashville

That's spooky - Having never seen a Max Ophuls film I watched "Madame De" this week and had wanted to seek out more of his work. Unfortunately the Belcourt is too far and Lola Montez is not out on DVD over here so I shall have to settle for "Letter from an Unknown Woman" or "Le Plaisir".

Re: The Incredible Ann Savage

Can't remember if you ever mentioned My Winnipeg again after this but I watched it last night and thought it was great. It's the same with any film you just know is going to leave you an emotional wreck afterwards...like The Wrath of Khan, for example.

Re: Becket Haiku

Tim has never seen

'The Royal Hunt of the Sun'

is it worth watching?

Re: Becket Haiku

'The Royal Hunt of the Sun' Haiku

Plummer and Shaw Do

Big Acting.
