That a nice house is nothing to a lively neighborhood, that community and street life and having a choice of how I want to travel when I leave my house (walk, bus, car) are deeply important to me. I feel chained to my car out here.

I think you're saying that PEOPLE are interesting, and wherever there are people, there will be dramas, stories, tensions. I loved listening to all the people in New York City, too, as I savored Thai food. There's no Thai food out here. That's the real problem with suburbia. I miss my Pong S'ri!!

Re: What is a Completely Outrageous Thing You Want to do This Year?

Get a sitter and take salsa lessons with my husband!

Re: This Year, Choose to Honor Your Style Statement

Yeah - being creative can be scary -- for me it's a money thing. Both of them worked for months at getting the crawling thing down. They'd try, rock back and forth, slide down, get back up... and they both got it (then, within weeks, they both stood up and started walking around). I was chagrinned to realized that I couldn't remember the last time I'd spent months learning something. If I don't get it right away, I tend to move on (which is another word for give up.) Good thing my boys didn't give up on crawling!

Re: Marlboro Mon Amour: How to Quit Smoking Without Losing Your Mind

I've often wished that non-smokers had a socially-sanctioned excuse to go outside and breathe deeply on a regular basis! Even before we had kids, we tended to stay at home on NYE. We have our own little ritual: just as the ball drops on tv, my husband hits "Random" on the CD changer (I guess we could start doing it on the iPod!). Whatever song comes up is the theme for the year. The year it was "The Ballad of John and Yoko" was a very good year!!

I love your idea of burning your hopes and grudges. When I was little my godfather did a similar thing on the Winter Solstice, only he'd give everyone cedar branches to tell our troubles to - then everyone would throw them on a bonfire - the smell was divine!! Then we'd get candles to tell our hopes to. A lovely idea, however you do it.

Re: Why My Daughter Has Crayola Tattoos or, Balance and the Work at Home Parent

I just started an office job after 4 years of working at home. One was "what do you really want out of life?" I sat with the question for a moment, expecting to come up with a laundry list of awards, accolades and accomplishments. What burbled up into my mind, though, was "a peaceful heart."

So in 2009 I'd like to move towards a peaceful heart.

Re: The Perfect Gift for a Friend: Intuitive Beading

Thanks, Pearl. I agree with you - not having the end in mind, but simply diving in often gives the best results. Hmmm... maybe I should contemplate that for other areas of my life!!!

Take for example the beaded comb I make for my mother-in-law every Christmas. This year, I had to re-start it three or four times before I got it to work. I ended up going back and buying some charms, even though I had no idea how they would fit onto the comb. In the end, it was the best one I'd ever done for her.

Re: http://carrieanddanielle.com/keep-on-keeping-on-how-to-stay-positive-during-tough-times/

I agree...
