When I wrote that story at the end of last year, I definitely thought it was one of the many anti-Mormon sites that do exist out there, unfortunately.

Rather than dig them up, a quick Google Search on the subject brings up a number of points of view.
http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=...

As for "are they a cult", the fact they have very open meetings and open curriculum and documentation and are clear about their beliefs should end that discussion immediately. There's no hidden agenda. The church is a Christian faith that shares 90+% of its beliefs with other similar religions, and it's become very attractive to people who are looking to find a family-centered religion that has answers and doesn't always threaten its members with hellfire and damnation.

Re: louisgray.com: The LDS/Facebook Rumor Didn't Pass the Common Sense Test

Colby, Steven posted a note this morning responding to my story, and he didn't like my phrasing of the word "nonsense", which is fine. I've got a great relationship with Steven and really like his writing. It's just that this specific story didn't hold water. I commented the same on his blog.

Re: louisgray.com: The LDS/Facebook Rumor Didn't Pass the Common Sense Test

Dean, thanks for the note. In addition to your comments, I've received a number of positive e-mails from people in the church and not in the church who were pleased to see someone not stoking the flames. Jesse Stay also added some great points:

http://staynalive.com/articles/2008/08/21/faceb...

Re: louisgray.com: The LDS/Facebook Rumor Didn't Pass the Common Sense Test

Mark, it's common to trust an individual you know over a big corporation or religion. I don't profess to be an expert on the many other religions out there, but in this case, had somebody started a rumor that the Presbyterians or Methodists or even the Scientologists were going to buy Facebook, or Digg, or some other property, it would clearly be false, and I wouldn't have blogged on it. E-mailed it to friends? Probably. But not blogged it as a rumor or potential news.

Feel free to ask me or Jesse Stay any questions on this. I know I'll probably get some small nits wrong every once and again, but I try to be transparent without beating anyone over the head.

Re: louisgray.com: The LDS/Facebook Rumor Didn't Pass the Common Sense Test

Duncan, I don't fault you for having some fun with the rumor. I had some thoughts in my head along the same lines of "10 changes for Facebook if the Church bought them", but of course, you were first. As for the comments on the church having a bias against non-whites, or hatred of gays, that's not true. It'll take more than a Disqus comment to wrap that one up, but suffice it to say we have a fairly diverse congregation where I attend each Sunday, and my two best friends, who came out in college, have attended church with me on more than one occasion. Should they ever marry their boyfriends, I'll be there, and not to object. :-)

Re: Problem with Seesmic intergration

This is now fixed.

Re: Geek Birth 2008 and Social Media

Thank you Pat. It means a lot.

I've been through the same trepidations about going so public with not only me with my silly t-shirt pics, magazine interviews, and otherwise opening up about my business, but especially pictures and videos about my family. I finally got over the concerns and felt that the new level closeness that we can achieve with people from all over the world far outweighs them. I really do feel that opening up and being real with both personal and business stuff has been a really good thing for me.

Your reply here exemplifies that as much as anything else.

Even though you and I haven't met, I liked you from the start thanks to the Red Sox hat and your friendly online persona. I do hope to meet in person someday.

As for "brand involvement" there was just one failed attempt. I forget who it was, but if I remember correctly someone wished me a happy birthday triggered from some post about Jason. I'm sure more of that will come soon.

Congrats again on your own new baby!

Re: Geek Birth 2008 and Social Media

what's going on Joe? What frustrates me is that these bloggers hurt the companies/services they cover and their readers as well because the readers can't access the service after reading about it. What's more, by the time the service is finally live, everyone might already forget about its existence after reading it initially. So it is just looks egoistical to break an embargo to hurt everyone else but your own blog - and this is frustrating.

Re: louisgray.com: Why the Embargo Process Is Broken and Why We Still Need It

Nick, as one of the bloggers quoted here for not naming names, I think I'll add my voice to Louis' answer here. True, first of all it is not really comfortable to feel that you are snitching. And we do have a code of ethics here, correct. But there's another side to it: the entire tech blogosphere is very small and everyone knows and follows each other. And do you think anyone wants to work among people that can think of you as your enemy? I don't think so and that's why I keep the names to myself. Actually when I am approached by startups with questions on the ideas for launch and they ask if they should send the news under embargo and what blogs they should avoid, I actually share what I know with them (and they appreciate it). But doing it publicly is a very different kind of thing that will most certainly hurt you in one way or another.

Re: Translation in other languages

Hi Friedrich, we'll definitely have multilanguage support in a new
future.

Re: Video: the Tiger Woods “Jesus” shot

Ah, Darren -- so cynical. But to believe that the church would want to acquire or scrape data from Facebook or any other application is wrong and well outside their goals. Family history and temple activity takes place when names are provided from direct members of the family. I can't submit names from strangers or celebrities, for example. The church also has no history of this type activity, and they wouldn't start with Facebook, which runs contrary to their goals and objectives.

Re: Categories

Email help@disqus.com for specific help

Re: Disqus 2.0, Featuring WordPress Comment Synching

Which plugin version is this?

Re: W3C compliancy

It's on our side.

Re: Categories

You can set a JavaScript parameter like the following:

var disqus_category_id = "###";

The number would be the id of your category, which is found in the URL
of each category page.
