Tim Russert fit that bill. So does Aaron. So does Chris Matthews.

The true dark horse candidate is, of course, Jason Linkins, of our invaluable Sunday bellowing fest snarkdowns.

Re: Sarah we hardly knew ye (Scripting News)

And here's the thing I really like about that scenario. Let's just say, for the sake of argument, that something like this transpires, and La Palin really does earn the nomination - somehow - as a partially credible Republican presidential candidate for 2012.

How is that a bad thing? Wouldn't pretty much guarantee Obama a second term? :-)

Re: Sarah we hardly knew ye (Scripting News)

It takes 75% to expel someone from the senate. I doubt the votes will be there. not with the repubs facing a possible democrat in the seat as his replacement. While it's more likely another repub would take his place, given the states history, they won't chance it.

Re: Sarah we hardly knew ye (Scripting News)

Yeah, well, another weakness of mine is believing in the best of people, not the worst. Sometimes it's a strength but in politics I admit, usually not. One can hope.

I am so happy today. I'm in NYC, and people were going nuts with joy last night. I hope the spirit of it lasts. The last time I saw this kind of joy in NYC was when the Mets won the 1986 world series. That joy lasted almost 2 years. I hope this one beats that.

On the main topic again though, I do think you will have some serious soul-searching in the moderate right. I don't think it will do them much more good than the same soul-searching did the Democrats after their loss to reagan. Maybe we'll see the right-wing equivalent of the DLC take form. That might work for them in places like Maine, Rhode Island, and Ohio, honestly. As I understand things, in Ohio the man issue that keeps the red people red is abortion rights. except for that, they'd have gone blue in 2000 & 2004. I think the Democrats really have to go full out on an education campaign to make the case for reproductive freedom in the battle ground states if they want to keep winning like they did this year, because that is THE big divider, and I say this as someone who's attended every abortion rights march on washington since I was years old in 1969. We won't have Bush and the wrecked economy on our side in 2012, after all, so it's time to really make the case and to do that we;re going to have to turn to precedents that are meaningful to deeply religious people who otherwise love our agenda. The fact is that historic judeo-christian tradition pre-nicean, actually supports the right to end a pregnancy if it threatens the life or health of the mother. All we have to do is invoke that and show how unwanted pregnancy causes poverty, and how poverty is a life-threatening condition.

Mind you, I answer "cosmologist" when asked my religion, so I don't need these proofs, but people who've been fed the bible since birth do. That's one issue that can keep the Plain people alive for a long time if we don't resolve it first. People voted their wallets in a lot of the formerly red districts this election cycle. We won't have that on our side next time.

Re: Sarah we hardly knew ye (Scripting News)

Hi Joshua

I think you're right as regards the Reagan analogy. I remember thinking in 76 that he'd grab it all in 1980. The structure of the GOP -- monied interests seeking compliant mouthpieces with ability to connect with 51% of the public -- needs its Reagans and Palins.

I think you're wrong RE McCain. I was a supporter in 2000. Was that the real McCain, or was this year's model the real one ? My read is that I was totally duped in 2k, and that this year's version was always the real thing.

Re: Sarah we hardly knew ye (Scripting News)

I pray you're right. Given Alaska's demographics and y'day's voting, odds high that Palin wins. She builds up her "experience" with 4 years in the Senate. The wingnut base continues to think of her as the New Reagan. McCain went to Berlin and drew a crowd of 200,000 folks. I like the idea of an American leader who excites the imagination and idealism of folks in other countries. I'm still trying to wrap my head around reasons folks do not like such a display of inspiration and support. All I can come up with is a deep and malignant cynicism.

RE the electoral college: come, come. You're quibbling. We get to vote. We get to choose our destiny. This little dog and pony show was little more than a PR junket. And I'm an undecided at this point.

Obama knows that many Americans are concerned about how he will handle the many international challenges that a now waning American superpower will face. He also knew that going overseas would offer an opportunity for demonstrating visibly how much other countries - especially our long-time allies with left-leaning tendencies - are looking for a change in the Executive Office. He wanted Americans to think, "Wow, they love him across the pond and in Continental Europe, he could REALLY make a difference from what we've experienced in the last 8 years." Thanks to W, Americans are at a new low that hasn't been seen since probably the 1970s but more likely you'd have to go back much further in history to match.

Just realize, you could put a Chihuahua in a suit and send it overseas and get a better reaction than what W receives.

Re: My kind of blogging and the 2008 campaign (Scripting News)

Stan,

For the most part, I'm not against Obama meeting with foreign leaders, but those thousands of people in Berlin in which he gave the speech were not foreign leaders. Now I would be saying the same thing if John McCain would have done or does the same thing.

Also, the President is elected by the electoral college and not by the popular vote (thus we don't directly elect the President). In fact as I'm sure you know, the person doing the attacking doesn't give a shit what you think, and probably likes that fact that you're giving shit to the person he or she is attacking.

And when you say this to the person being attacked, you're just increasing their pain, making it harder for them to ask for help without getting shit from the person making them miserable, *and* people who say stuff like what you just said.

So let me try to make the world just a teeny bit kinder place by asking you in the future to do the following.
