More than that, I believe she knew she was wrong and wrote it anyway.

Rhetoric is the art of persuasive speaking and writing that sometimes lacks sincerity. This specific author's piece, particularly the part on sexism, lacks sincerity and fails to persuade. Everyone who watches GoT knows that the High Sept - a man - also took the naked, jeering walk-of-shame.

There are valid examples of sexism in GoT..the walk-of-shame was definitely not one of them.

Re: Game of Thrones Finale Recap: Death Is a Gift

..think harder and you'll get it.

Re: 'Game of Thrones' Season Finale Recap: The Naked and the Dead

I think the ultimate point is that none of those questions really matter. In the end, you'll be asking if any human life survives in Game of Thrones. Winter is coming...and with it, the living dead. Humanity will have to fight for it's life.

Re: 'Game of Thrones' Season Finale Recap: The Naked and the Dead

I'm afraid Jon - in his first incarnation - was unbearably dull. It occurs in season 5, episode 3 - "High Sparrow" at about 42:17 into the episode.

The High Sept is acting out a sexual fantasy in Baylish's brothel when he's interrupted by Sparrows who burst in and accuse him of profaning their faith. They beat and drag the naked High Sept into the streets while chanting "Sinner. Sinner." There are laughs from people along the streets. Each time the man covers his genitals with his hands, the sparrows lash him with a stick, causing him to remove his hands. There are more calls of "Sinner.", and "Repent, you filth." and "Shame on you." The scene ends.

In the next scene, the High Sept complains to the King's Counsel that he was assaulted by fanatics who call themselves Sparrows. He says he was humiliated, beaten and left naked on the cobblestones. He asks Cersei for justice by arresting the Sparrows and executing their leader, the High Sparrow. Cersei looks bored with his complaint, but asks where to find the High Sparrow.

Cersai goes to visit the High Sparrow and tells him that instead of arresting and executing him as requested, she has thrown the High Septon into the dungeons. She says The Faith and The Crown are two pillars that hold up the world, so they must support each other. In other words: I can, but won't, execute you, High Sparrow, if you accuse my enemies.

That enemy is Margery, who Cersai hates but can't just throw into prison without a pretext. The pretext becomes Margery's brother, Loras - specifically, his homosexuality. Her device is the newly empowered extremist Sparrows.

To make a long story short - Loras is accused by the High Sparrow. Loras lies. Margery also lies to protect her brother. Loras's male lover is called to testify and proves that they're both lying. Margery and Loras are arrested and put into the dungeons.

That's how the High Sparrow was blackmailed, then elevated and empowered by none other than Cersai herself! Cersai intends to use the High Sparrow as proxy to eliminate her enemies. Later, the High Sparrow uses his new power to accuse Cersai. That the incestuous Cersai gets caught in a trap she set for people she hate is just reward for her artifice.

Cersai is a woman caught in a cruel trap of her own making. The experience of Cersai - the character - is NOT like the experience of women, writ large - unless you're saying that women are hypocritical, conniving monsters who get caught in their own traps.

As stated earlier, a male character was subjected to the same naked, jeering, walk-of-shame and was thrown into prison by Cersai herself when he sought redress. These specific, fictional, King's Landing events are not indicative of real-life misogyny.

Of course, you've been following the series and must know how Cersei came to make "Atonement", and why. I'm puzzled as to why you pretend you don't know by concocting a false analogy to real-life misogyny.

Re: Game of Thrones Finale Recap: Death Is a Gift

A male character - The High Septon of the Faith of the Seven - experienced a Mother's Mercy, walk-of-shame similar to the one that Cersei endured. I had problems with dryness too, in the beginning; it prevented my hair from curling at the roots. I had puffy roots which I corrected by doing the old-school steam - you know, with conditioner, plastic cap and hot dryer or heat-cap for 30 minutes. I do that twice a week, if I can. What helps also is sectioning and using an applicator brush to apply the conditioner to the roots. It turns out that I wasn't getting enough conditioner onto the roots which is why they lagged behind the ends in curling.

Here's another tip...LOL.. Apply the conditioner to dry hair. The thinking is that when your hair is already saturated it can't absorb anything more. So, I apply condit. mixed with a little water to my dry hair, steam it for 30 minutes, then rinse in the shower...then style.

It didn't seem to matter much what kind of conditioner I used (cheap drug store ones, or expensive deep conditioners)....as long as I used heat; however, I don't use conditioners with silicone. Silicones seem to coarsen my hair.

Terrific blog.
Cheers

Re: Joan Rivers Is Not Sorry for CNN Walkout: Every Question Was Accusatory

By "class" you must mean the way she carefully poses herself of that sofa, legs crossed just so... Or, the overuse of awkward and complex words when simpler ones would do. Maybe you mean the circuitous, redundant, torturous questions with numerous, meaningless clauses tacked on, that cause guests eyes to glaze over? It's all very...anchory, similar to what Colbert calls truthiness

I'm afraid that Fredericka is mind-numbingly dull. She asked Joan 3 different versions of the same question: Isn't she - Joan - sorry about offending people? The answer to that question is obvious, Joan has done the same comedy for 50 years, If she was sorry, she would have stopped long ago.

Fred didn't think carefully about who she was interviewing so as to take an appropriate approach. I am surprised more guests don't walk out. Which points out the irrelevance of the fur question: Peta targets Joan not because they really care about her 15-year-old furs; they target her for publicity. It is the reason they don't target the rest of the world who wear leather. So, if the Peta targeting is bogus, why ask Joan about it?

Re: Slate Forgot That the One Common Factor in Rapes Are Rapists

furthermore...you can't have a talk with frat boys about raping as if raping was just a misunderstanding. Rape is a conscious strategy that works for the rapist...rape works until it doesn't work anymore. You'd be trying to have a convo with the rapist's self-interested animal self when the animal self isn't into having convos.

The only solution is to have unraped women get in touch with their OWN self-interested animal selves...and employ animal survival strategies. Your compassionate, militant talk can be saved for assaulted women only; unraped women don't need compassion or militancy, they need strategies!

Still, at some point during the assaulted woman's healing, she will want to hear about survival strategies to avoid, as much as possible, being assaulted again.

One of those strategies is not to become drunk(incapacitated) around potential predators ..

Re: Slate Forgot That the One Common Factor in Rapes Are Rapists

I think it's Moms and Dads who tell their daughters what they should wear. You know, right after she comes down the stairs they say "You're NOT leaving this house dressed like THAT, young lady!" I wonder what Moms and Dads know about some men that cause them to caution their daughters on attire?

And Mom and Dad won't allow you to drink.... or bring boys up to your room. And there's that curfew. That's not so much society as it is parents. Surely, parents love their kids and want to protect them, right?

So, what do our parents know about young men and their daughters that cause them to set all these rules?

Re: Barbara Walters Grills Don Lemon on MH370: CNN Wouldn’t Cover If ‘Not for the Ratings’

CNN has pushed a narrative that Malaysia media is not open and it's investigators incompetent. At the same time, they've created a narrative that America, and CNN, and CNN analysts are competent and diligent and are working on behalf of "The Families".

No matter what the Malaysians do, CNN second-guesses them. The Prime Minister told the awful truth as tactfully as he could, that is, that the flight "ended" in the south Indian Ocean: CNN suggests that he is callous while mis-quoting the man.

The Prime Minister's statement effectively shut down the manic coverage in CNN studios. And Wolf Blitzer was furious!

In an interview with it's CEO, Wolf Blitzer demanded absolute certainty from Inmarsat that the plane took the southern route. Of course, the CEO could not say he's absolutely certain - absolute certainty is a matter of religion, not science; so Wolf, in that one question, acts as Inquisitor instead of journalist and tries to discredit Inmarsat data so CNN can carry on with speculation.

Whenever CNN is criticized, they say they're doing it for the families. To
bolster that lie, they bring on a very small handful off relatives. One of those relatives is Sarah Bajc. She can barely hold it together on camera; yet, CNN torments the distressed woman with questions and pretends they're working for her.

It's despicable.

All this ugliness over CNN's corporate desperation for ratings. The Malaysians must pay. The Families must pay. The public must pay. Truth and decency falls by the wayside. And in the end, the ratings will not last.

Re: Barbara Walters Slams Don Lemon Over CNN’s Missing Plane Coverage (Video)

I'm afraid that "Update" wouldn't cut it. The so-called breaking news is either stuff they reported several days earlier, or news other media already reported.

And their "sources" are some guy in the back room.

Re: A friendship died with George Zimmermans acquittal

Many people don't see the face of racism as the face of a white woman...
