I linked to your new page in today's blog post.

Re: The Biden Plagiarism Scandal

I think it is worth noting that the Biden presidential scandal did not bring down Biden. It was the last gasp of an already struggling campaign, but he continued to serve in the Senate for 20 more years.

If there is skepticism about plagiarism today, I think it was around then as well. After all, it is an odd punishment for a plagiarist to get 4 more terms in the Senate.

I think that the current plagiarism scandals don't have legs. They are either too old or too weak of cases. Once I see what happens when a more serious and better-supported allegation comes to light, we might get a better feel.

Then again, I think we're all a lot more cynical about politics in general these days. Wouldn't shock me if a lot of once-stinging barbs turn out to be less than damaging.

Re: The Biden Plagiarism Scandal

Jonathan, I completely agree that plagiarism is abhorrent. You're "preaching
to the choir." However, call me jaded, but I don't think the average person
has as strong an opinion about the issue as you and I. I think the "fact
that plagiarist is a slur being wielded against politicians" doesn't show so
much that most people care about it so much as it shows that the opposing
side will use whatever weapon they can lay hands on. And the media will be
there to provide the sensationalism.

Yes, it does reflect poorly upon a potential president, but the era that
brought Biden down is not the same era we live in today. The constant is
that negative politics have always been malodorous and will continue to be.

Best regards,
Joan Reeves
http://slingwords.blogspot.com

Re: The Biden Plagiarism Scandal

I have to strongly disagree. The fact that plagiarist is a slur being wielded against politicians shows that many people do care about it and are offended by it. Let us not forget that a plagiarism is, fundamentally, a lie at worst or an omission at best. This reflects poorly upon a potential president.

While I agree that jokes can have a strong impact, such as with McCain's age and Obama's alleged arrogance. the attacks hurt as well.

Negative politics in general stink. It's that simple as I see it.

Re: The Biden Plagiarism Scandal

I think the current majority opinion about copyright and plagiarism is that it's not as heinous as previous generations thought. Many don't understand why it's such a big deal so I think this will be a non-issue for millions of voters unless the late-night talk show hosts play it up to where Biden's name gets linked to stupidity in action. What a curious world we live in when jokes may, and very well can, determine the course of a nation.

Re: William Patry Quits Blogging

Thanks, Jonathan. Sadly, it is a well-known spam blog.

I would file a DMCA notice with copyright at theplanet dot com to file a notice against their host, as always, you're free to use the stock letters on my site if they'll help you.

As for Patry, I can understand and relate to that feeling. I guess I Just hope to get others to help hold back the ocean as well..

Let me know if I can help with your problem!

Re: William Patry Quits Blogging

To complete my comment (I'm feeling rather scattered today), I think Patry felt as if he were the Dutch boy trying to hold back the ocean with his thumb stuck in a hole in the dike.

Re: William Patry Quits Blogging

Jonathan, this is distressing news. Unfortunately, I'm already upset today about copyright issues. Found a blog post I wrote BE A HAPPY HOOKER for my Performancing blog Saturday

http://performancing.com/blog/joan-reeves

reprinted in its entirety this morning on http://zurza.com/be-a-happy-hooker/. Of course my name didn't appear anywhere. I complained in Zurza's comments, which is of course moderated. Complained to Performancing and Technorati too.

Re: Why Flickr Licensing Fails

I have very little doubt that you ARE indeed very savvy with these issues. As someone who reads licensing agreements and pays attention to these types of issues, you are already in the 99% percentile of all users. Even I'll admit that there are some sites, especially those where I'm not putting up my content, where I don't thoroughly read the TOS. It is, however, a bad habit and I do admit that.

However, I am glad that the site has been able to help you and has been useful. Thank you very much for the encouragement. If there are any issues you'd like me to address, please let me know!

Re: Why Flickr Licensing Fails

Jonathan, I thought I was pretty savvy about copyright issues and licensing. I'm one of the few people who actually reads licensing agreements and terms of service. I don't Flickr for the reasons you've cited. However, I have learned so much from reading your blog. You articulately translate complex information into easily assimilated facts. Thank you. Well done.
