No we built a bridge long enough for Obama to get into office and decide if he wants to finish it...

The only way to change the auto industry, IMHO, is to allow it to blow up and have new more nimble entrepreneurial companies take up the slack.

However that said I am for the bail out as I do not believe that the economy could sustain such a loss at this time...

I wish that Gas was $20 a gallon, I feel that would actually give the economy a drive to build and re-engineer the overall energy system, taking us out of this recession.

Sadly I just filled up for a $1.75 a gallon in LA...

Thanks, I think that why you are probably right that YC is not dead (I know the title was a bit much) the wider concept I believe is but that is something that only time will show.

I believe that the model on the larger scale (as I mention in my short post there are always exceptions) is dead. The problem is that there are not enough Fred Wilsons (I wish there were more of you) out there to take up the volume of YC model companies any more (strictly my opinion). Maybe I am wrong but I would not want to be a company at this point that does not have a funding strategy from start to profitability.

Agreed, it is something I am very familiar with, as when we launched
PhoneTag we started day 1 with a profitable, monetizable business model.

However I am not sure if there are enough businesses that can reach
profitability quickly enough before requiring additional funding.. but maybe
I am wrong, it would not be the first time.

Also if a business is so quick to monetize does it ever need Ycombinator or
will it by pass them also?

Very true but I do think that the LP issues with the VC's are changing the
way in which business was done in the valley previously. I would say at
this point it is going to be less about the names and more about the
sustainability and reality of the business model going forward.

But to be clear, there are a select group of people out there that do make
things happen and they will always be important to any success.

As always you make 2 very good points. I think that your point II is the most interesting one as cash flow is the ultimate defense against the need for VC's.

However I still believe that if you look at the bulk of Ycombinator companies the "mainstream" model that they followed is no longer out there. Especially when you have things like the Harvard endowment unable to make its LP commitments...

I do not need to check my competition closer but thank you for the suggestion. The product that they sell to compete with me is only available when you pay them. The one that you are talking about is free and is nowhere near our quality. It is a cute solution but not one of our customers would stand for that product.

Adam, no offense taken, they do not offer the same service. In fact the service that they try to offer that is like ours they charge for. Our service is the most accurate voicemail transcription service available, we target it to high end executives where saving an hour a month is worth $100's to them.

I agree the battery thing is really bad. I have not bought the iPhone yet, was about to and then had to leave for London. I am thinking of going back to the curve or the bold as I have heard a lot of horror stories about the iPhone.

Actually just saw this, http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/11/05/a..., it is the hard drive. If I had ponied up for the solid state drive then I would get it now.

But the normal drive must be recalled because they had scheduled to ship them and then pulled them to 3 weeks later, if it was a supply issue they would have known earlier.
