(nor do jeans either, but we're talking more about the default being suit expectations, not jeans expectations).

Silicon Valley was made mostly by people in plain, everyday clothing who did amazing things; not people in amazing clothing who did plain, everyday things.

- dave mcclure
http://500hats.typepad.com/

Re: HalfBaked.com — Entrepreneurial Improv

nice job Amit! looks like a great performance :)

one other tweak i think might improve the model -- have the groups publicly announce their choice of words before they begin brainstorming, and let the group that announces *first* be able to pitch *last* (or perhaps let them choose their slot). and the group that chooses their words *last* has to pitch *first*. i think it will help for people to push each other to choose quickly, and thereby gain slight advantage to be able to pitch later.

anyway, seems like the general model works pretty well... i was asked to run another HalfBaked session at the O'Reilly E-tech conference, and we'll keep sharing notes on how to make it better.

nice job on the video! great to have this recorded :)

- dave mcclure

Re: Are people afraid of Google?

well, these days i think a lot of people rip rip Google as much as they do Microsoft... guess that's a pretty good measure of their success, eh?

in fact, i even got invited to coffee and made a friend there over over this critical post about the Google black hole of new product launches.

however, arrogance & secrecy aside, they usually do a pretty good job of innovating, so i try and be even-handed when i think it's merited. for example, if they're doing what i think they are with Google Checkout then it's a pretty smart move.

if there's anything i'd criticize them for, it's that the culture is SO secretive. for a company whose stated mission is to "organize all the world's information and make it universally accessible", they sure do a good job of making sure *their* information is universally hidden ;)

anyway, i give them kudos for the YouTube acquisition... the ex-PayPal folks over there i worked with definitely deserve credit for the amazing service they built. it's impressive Google recognized they were losing the battle in that market and bought the winner before someone else did.

but i agree, there are some similarities between Google in the late 2000's and Microsoft in the early 90's.

- dave

Re: Of Cool Grandmas

this post makes me smile :)

someday i'd love to meet your grandparents... and introduce them to my son.

Re: Richard Edelman calls…

accepting responsibility without subsequent accountability -- ie, someone resigning or getting fired, or at the least being censured -- is NOT "responsibility".

interestingly, Edelman's blog comments are now being held for moderated approval... not sure if that was the case prior to the past few days, or whether Richard just wanted the weekend off. the last comment on his blog was posted just after 5pm on friday.

in any case, steve's blog comments are posting, and my response is noted here:
http://www.micropersuasion....

i'm not a PR expert, but i am a blogger... certainly more transparency, disclosure, and *accountability* is needed here.

- dave mcclure

Re: Spock offers an ambitious “people” search engine

Spock rocks.
