Sometimes I feel like I just moved to California after graduating from college in Oregon, and then I count on my fingers...and my toes...and someone else's fingers...and realize that I've now lived in California for OVER A QUARTER CENTURY. And that the popular album ("Dare" by Human League) that I put on my 2008 Christmas list was popular OVER A QUARTER CENTURY ago.

Man, I remember when telephones were permanently attached to the wall! And they didn't have buttons! And if you didn't like your phone service, you couldn't switch to another company! And computers? Yeah, and when I was in college and wanted to use a computer, I had to walk all the way across campus in the pouring rain just to log onto a DEC PDP 11/70 - a computer that didn't have any graphics or icons, just text! And when we wanted to listen to music - hey, don't walk away! Where are you going! I didn't tell you about...oh never mind. Where's my bottle of Geritol? That sounds like a rather personal question. :)

I've actually held off on implementing this. I know that it can be turned off if I don't like it, but I'm not sure that there's a real benefit in unifying the conversations on the Disqus and the FriendFeed platforms, other than the fact that it will boost your Disqus comment count. How does spam moderation work, for example? Louis and Steven, I'll be following both of you to see your experiences with this. (In case anyone's keeping track, I entered this comment in Disqus.)

Re: Preliminary Results - Reading FriendFeed via Google Reader

The beauty of standards is that even if two applications aren't explicitly "all tied in," it's often possible to use the interface standards to tie them together yourself. Take, for example, the recent tool that lets you sync your Disqus comments and your FriendFeed comments. If I ever get an opportunity to plan a product from scratch, I want to start with defining the interfaces (both between the product components, and with external applications) before I detail the product features.

Re: A better Disqus integration with FriendFeed

I meant do you sync one way or two way?

Re: A better Disqus integration with FriendFeed

oh sure confuse me with big words that the dictionary can't help me with :)

Re: A better Disqus integration with FriendFeed

sorry if I confused the issue Phil .. That's part of why
you have multiple places to go, to talk to different people. But as a
big supporter of both services, I like the idea. As one calculation has it - there are 6 Billion downloaded songs that stand to be upgraded to DRM-less versions at 30cents per song. that amount to $1.8 Billion that is either going to the labels or to Apple or both. People talk a lot about scams well in my opinion this is one of the biggest scams yet on the net.

I've seen a couple of people try and justify the non-removable battery as it being a non-issue but I also know that if Dell or HP or any number of PC laptop makers tried the same thing shit would hit the fan royally and I know as a user I wouldn't stand for it. That is defacto proprietarism as far as I am concerned.

The funny thing is though with Apple and it's attitude towards proprietary practices is that they are the darling of the Web 2.0 and social media crowd who are always going on about open this and open that. Makes me laugh my ass off.

Re: Jobs owes Apple and its customers more than a hormone imbalance

Mark you raise some valid points and I appreciate that. I however of course can only go by what I read as I am obviously not a part of the Apple inner circle. That said what I have read over the years and trust me I do pay attention to this stuff is that nothing happens within Apple that doesn't at some point pass in front of Mr. Jobs.

BTW I do agree that Ive would be a very hard man to replace and if what I have read about the man is any indication if there is anyone to be able to maintain the Apple vision it would be him.

Again .. thanks.

Re: Some Apple users are so cute in their fandom

that is a good point to keep in mind

Re: Some Apple users are so cute in their fandom

Uhm ... if I am anti anything it has to be anti-blind loyalty or anti-stupid. If you have read any of my writing on WinExtra (my home blog) you will see I am not a Microsoft apologist - or at least I try very hard not to be. This post was meant in part as a fun type thing not as a slap against Apple or Mac users but more at the idea that fandom (even in a general sense) is silly especially when what is presented is opposite of the fawning that goes on.

As for the DRM issue - two points .. 1) while they are allowing users to replace previously purchased tracks with non DRM versions it is going to cost you 30cents 2) the DRM will still be applied to books etc that are available on iTunes .. only the music has changed in that regard.

Look I just call 'em as I see them - I don't pretend otherwise. If I think something stinks I don't care who is causing the stink I'll say so regardless.

Re: Jobs owes Apple and its customers more than a hormone imbalance

As much as I would like to agree with you I'm not so sure. The thing that I both admire and respect about Steve Jobs is his steel will that has driven the company. At the same time as a computer users (and pundit I guess) it is also the thing I don't like about him.

What he has done for Apple is something I believe will be studied in business classes in years to come. That said from watching the company as I have I just don't see anyone within the Apple structure that has that same drive and vision - well vision maybe but the same steel will to drive the vision .. no that I don't see.

(btw thanks for the great discussion - I've enjoyed it very much)

Re: Jobs owes Apple and its customers more than a hormone imbalance

I am not suggesting that he isn't suffering from the generic problem of "hormone imbalance" but considering the fact that the last couple of years my wife has suffered from the same kind of thing but with her it was called menopause (which is exactly that - a hormone imbalance) this tells us absolutely nothing - plain and simple.

Do I think he's lying?
