My brother had this idea years ago for a gourmet "soup kitchen." He is quite the soup chef, so the idea would be to have several types of soup and fresh bread. There would be a suggested price like $8/ bowl. Pay what you can. He said that poor people deserve good soup, too!

It would have to be a wonderful and generous group of people to get this going, but I think if the quality of food is excellent then people who can pay will pay at or above the value of a meal. LOVE IT!

Re: Walkable downtown?

When I lived on 5th Street I walked to the 7th Street Safeway, but it is a haul with groceries in hand. I don't know of a butcher in Frederick at all, but there is a nice Italian deli on Church Street. There is a Farmers Market on Thursdays on East Street during the growing season. There is a pharmacy on Market and 3rd Street. I hate running errands in the car as well, so I keep it to a minimum. We usually shop at the Common Market and the Farmers Market on Baughman's Lane (you have to drive there). There is a city-run gym in Baker Park, on Bentz Street. Proof is a great bakery on Patrick Street.

I'd love to see a challenge to do all of one's shopping downtown Frederick. What do you say?

Downtown Frederick is certianly NOT a smaller version of New York City or Chicago. It is small and cute and has lots of specialty shops. Nonetheless, it is by FAR the best city to live in Maryland, in my humble opinion. And downtown is the best part.

Good Luck!

Re: Does anyone else like classical music, jazz, good wine and food, and exploring museums and other interesting things?

BAH! I often drag my husband to such things, but he prefers me to go with the ladies. ;-P I'll drop him off at the movie theatre! (He does love classical music and jazz, but not as much as I do.)

Just a plug for my studio- on June 1st, I'm hosting an open studio from 6pm- whenever. I have a sculpture studio beneath the Blue Elephant at 4 West 5th Street. Come say HELLO and introduce yourself. I know lots of fun artist-type folks who enjoy this sort of thing!

Speaking of 611- has anyone been there? I am curious about it. I know a jazz musician in town and he said that sometimes they have faboo musicians and sometimes they are terrible, so you have to go several times to get a feel for it. Let's have a FredMarylandOnlilne jazz date at 611! That could be fun.

Re: Proof Reopening

As part of the growing population who is intolerant to wheat, I with that some of these places would offer some wheat-free goodies. There are plenty of yummy options for rice-based foods, etc. They do have good coffee, though.

Re: Police News

YIKES! Sometimes I am curious about such things as well. There must be access to police reports. Does your neighborhood have a neighborhood advisory council? The whole city is divided up into neighborhoods, though I think the divisions need to be smaller. You can probably find out on the county website, or call the shariff's office. Maybe they can direct you to police reports.

Re: Frederick newcomer needs help !!

I don't know if you have an religious inclinations, but many local churches offer really great youth programs. She'd be able to meet other teens from all over the county! Church youth groups tend to be very welcoming to new people; much more so than junior high classrooms.

I moved to a little town in Michigan from Japan when I was 12. It took forever to adjust! That is a challenging age no matter what. My best to you and your daughter on this new journey.

Re: Another question about finding a place to live/relocating

There are a couple of small houses for rent in my neighborhood. I am near Baker Park, but far enough away that things are cheaper. Next walk we take, I'll write down the numbers of the houses for rent and you can call. You can walk to Fitness First on Prospect Blvd. from here as well as the Rec Center in Baker Park. There are also about four other parks nearby. You can walk to downtown and to Hood from here. You'd have to bike to Ft. Detrick and FCC would be a bit of a haul, but you could bike it.

Re: Keys and Balls: Public Art in Frederick

What about bronze fountains and statuary? There is a cool bronze drinking fountain for people and for dogs along the creek, but it is a little out of the way. Maybe we ought to map out the cool art in Frederick and work to generate more GOOD ART. "A Sculpture Trail," if you will...

Re: Birthday Dinner?

We had our wedding reception at Brewer's Alley. I was there several years ago. Fifth street has cleaned up it's act. I still have a studio there and it is still my favorite street in town!!!

Wines with corks!?! YAY! I used to go down to the one by the 7-11 when I had open studios and parties. They have a fairly good selection of wine.

Re: Finding a place to live

What kind of prices does the YMCA have? I was a little scared, but I have a driving threshold. 0-1mile I walk if I'm not carrying something heavy. 1.5-3 miles I bike if I can. Most of the time when I wind up driving short distances it is because I am late!!!!

Re: Finding a place to live

South Market/ South Street has in the past not been the best area, but builders have come in and put up fancy townhomes that look really nice and a little on the expensive side. And there is a swanky new Italian restaurant on the corner there. That link I posted about the townhouse for rent is a little farther away from Market Street, closer to Jefferson. I know the owner; he's quirky, but a really nice guy. I live just a five or ten minute walk away. There is a sketchy liquor shop on the corner of Jefferson and South that makes the neighborhood seem a little seedy, but South Street is really shaping up! People are cleaning up their own homes and new folks are moving in. I wouldn't have a problem living there. Heck, I lived on 5th Street with prostitutes drinking on my stoop and things were fine. You probably just want to stay away from Route 40 neighborhoods.

Also, the city just refurbished Carrol Creek park, which is just up the street from Market and South. There are condos a long the park that are selling for buko-bucks! What was once a lousy part of town, is now the most sought-after!

Re: Finding a place to live

OK: Here is a townhouse for rent for less than $1000 downtown: http://www.juergenhaber.com... South Street isn't the best street in town, but I don't know that I would say that it is actually dangerous. (Can anyone weigh in on this?) Nonetheless, you can get a great old place for a steal and still be within walking distance to city center.

Re: Finding a place to live

Living just outside of town and living in town are very different scenarios. I've done both and I felt like I've lived in different cities entirely! Being able to walk downtown is a big deal for me. I live about 20 minutes walking distance from the center of town, but I wanted to buy a house with a little yard for a garden. We can walk to Baker Park in only 10 minutes.

Re: Finding a place to live

Unfortunately, many apartments for rent downtown are advertised only on signs at the actual location. I'd contact a realtor in town who can look for you. I wouldn' t pay over $1000 for a downtown apartment and know many people living in swanky old places for much, much less. Good Luck! If I see anything I'll post it.

Re: affordable acupuncture

I was just at the Turning Point today! I was single when I lived on 5th Street. I don't see what all sorts of people from all sorts of walks of life can't live together in the same neighborhood. I think that often when someone has a new addition to the family life can get kind of lonely and it is nice to know that there are other moms in the neighborhood.

Single, married, or family I don't want a mind-numbing-live-in-my-car lifestyle. Like I said, our neighborhood has all sorts of people- singles, married, families with babies, families with older children, retired folks, etc. We can all walk to Baker Park and downtown, not to mention to Rita's! Hooray for downtown!

Re: Any adult sports or activities?

Are there any baseball teams for men? I loved living on 5th street, but I was renting and when I got married we wanted to buy. I have a studio underneath the Blue Elephant, so 5th still feels like home a little. :-)

Last year, we bought a home on the edge of downtown that has LOTS of families and we can still walk to Baker Park and downtown. We live in Catoctin Park, behind Rita's Italian Ice. The houses are small and cute and much, much cheaper than the ones on the Park. We bought our lovely little bungalow for less than $300K. We are adopting and will be a family of three by the end of the year. We bought this place with family in mind for sure! Our neighborhood isn't as cool as downtown, but we love it and we love our big back yard and all the little parks around us- Vale Park, Valley Park and of course, Catoctin Park across the street.

There are several cute bungalows for sale right now!

Re: What is the term for a resident of Frederick?

I usually say "Fredericktonian," but that is stolen from "Washingtonian" and doesn't *really* work.
