I'm still happy I spent a lot of time for past few years on Facebook and Twitter. I still get more engagement on Facebook than anywhere else. But I do have to admit that you have the better idea.

You totally missed the biggest thing that will happen in 2017: Apple is coming out with a group of epic products -- all mixed reality based. Start with the iPhone that does AR and VR and MR -- all together.

I've been ignoring all this for a while. Remember a million people protested when Facebook turned on the news feed. So, the masses are often asses.

That said, Twitter has quite a few problems that I wish they would fix.

First of all, the latest Mac version absolutely sucks. It crashes on my account after only a few minutes and is totally unusable.

There are lots of ways to make Twitter much more attractive to both heavy users, like me, as well as new users who don't have any clue what Twitter is for. But they require an investment in filtering and technology that Twitter has demonstrated an unwillingness to do that I simply don't understand. If that's coming from the investors then shame on you.

Slave to the algorithm? The feed is a LOT better on Facebook than anywhere else. It's pretty good about filtering out crap. If you spend time training it.

I look at it differently and you mixed two different problems here.

The guy saying he was unfollowing you is an asshole. He designed that to injure. If he didn't want to injure, he could have sent a private message saying "I just unfollowed you and wanted you to know why, in case you care to improve." I still might be hurt by the message, but at least it's not in public and I might actually learn something from the message.

But as to tagging, I usually do that BECAUSE IT IS FRIENDLY TO THE READER. There are plenty of ways for you to remove the pain that I will cause your notification systems. Even though they are imperfect, I know. But when you talk about Jay Rosen on, say, Facebook, I really like it because I can click on his name, read his account, and maybe even follow him. Not linking makes me do more work.

I'm not going to stop tagging people for exactly that reason. I'm on the reader's side. Everyone else will have to deal (and I have to deal a LOT with being tagged so I know the pain of it too and I'm sympathetic and wish we had more tools to control our notifications).

Because the costs of developing an app don't pay off, app developers tell me. Many of them.

That said, I bet you'll see the biggest apps come to Windows Phone -- eventually. Uber just got there last week.

Unfortunately you miss how app companies work. They can't afford to build for every platform out there. Look at the new Timeful app, released this morning. it's only on iOS: http://youtu.be/ztswLXT8wfs

Why? They are going after the most profitable, biggest, market first. I seriously doubt it'll get to Windows Phone anytime soon (they are already working on Android).

Easy. I interview hundreds of startups every year that are venture backed. Nearly none ship on Windows Mobile. The apps that do aren't even close to as good a quality as on iOS. All you have to do is go to hackathons around the world, as I do. If you did you would rarely see Windows Phones. They have far less than 10% marketshare. Developers aren't supporting them.

I lost a friend to lung cancer in the 1980s. One who never smoked. He played a key role in my life, helping me get online through the BBS in his garage. This disease sucks and I can't imagine what you are going through. Sending positive thoughts to you and your family and, of course, Lisa. Kudos for sharing this journey in both of your lives, I bet this helps countless other people as well.
