The people in Congress have a crippling credibility problem stemming, in large part, by the way they have passed legislation that effectively makes them immune from formal charges of bribe taking, reclassifying the bribes they receive as "campaign contributions," among other dodges.

The public is not ignorant, well understands that Congress is corrupt, and knows Congresspeople expend a considerable effort both in their quests for bribes as well as figuring out ways steal from public treasury for the benefit of those who are bribing them. These are among the reasons poll after poll shows an extremely low confidence in Congress. It's also among the reasons so many people don't bother voting. Beyond the political demagoguery, what's to choose between one thief or the other?

CNN does "journalism?" Sure, if journalism is the process by which every right-wing loony in the universe is provided a friendly forum. If journalism is a procedure where the lies, distortions, and scurrilous attacks by Republican hit-artists and treated as if they were somehow sane.

CNN needs to get over itself and realize that they can't fool all of the people all of the time.

Despite what they say in public, especially while campaigning, Presidents are adamant in refusing to step back from any perceived powers, justified or not. Obama appears to be no different in this case and in others. It's almost as if a spring uncoils in their brains when sworn into office, short-circuiting the areas involving reasonable limits.

"Bad prose?" I read the article, and while it did have a viewpoint, it was decidedly not "bad prose." It was informative, well sourced and cogent in offering a snapshot of the current state of play on a college campus in 1983. This says a lot more to recommend the author (22-year old Barack Obama) than the inchoate hit pieces by Jack Cashill.

Although undoubtedly a fine surgeon, Dr. Gupta has not distinguished himself when it comes to fiddling with the facts in some his on-air reports. I'm recalling of course, his grievously flawed diatribe against global warming which trotted out every discredited industry canard crafted by energy industry propagandists. Probably better if his sort is firmly excluded from responsible public service.

The only way I can make any sense out of U.S. foreign policy is to adopt the Noam Chomsky thesis that says, in effect, our foreign policy is essentially gun boat diplomacy at the direction and for the benefit of big business. Regardless of the pretty frames and clever nuances put on it by outfits like AEI, that seems to be exactly the way things have played out in the world for the last hundred years or so. Frankly, early signs seem to suggest that Obama is in that mainstream. Meet the new administration. Just like the old administration, only different.

Maybe it's just me, but Leon Panetta (whom I don't know and have never met) seems to bear a striking resemblance to Silent Screen comedian Buster Keaton. I don't know if this has anything to do with the "I don't get no respect" phase he seems to be going through on his nomination, but hey, stranger things have happened. Feinstein, California, Hollywood. Pratfalls. Connect the dots.

Truth is none of these government jobs require more than half a brain. The guys at the top have flunkies to handle the details and get to say Yes or No once in a while. Panetta will probably be bored out of his skull after the first six months if he gets the job. Good health plan, though, and the retirement benefits are sweet.

The mousetrap in the package is the requirement that UAW workers absorb pay cuts that would put them on par with non-union autoworkers in the south, the deal breaker that stopped the package in the Senate. Interestingly, there seem to be no demands that executives take pay cuts, too.

I agree, it's a bloodbath at CNN. Don't know if anyone else has noticed, but I detect an increasingly rightward slant in their coverage and commentary. But maybe I'm just being paranoid. I'll continue to watch with interest as this unfolds. If they do go the Fox News route, I'll block them just like I blocked Fox news about a year ago. That leaves me LINK, CMT, BBC, and MSNBC (except for the always egregious Morning Joe.)
