It just means that journalists who once had the luxury of letting editors deal with these issues will have to spend more time thinking about their personal ethics and how to manage their relationships, reactions, and responses to these sponsorships.

Professional considerations aside, I wonder if this move by Facebook will change friends' actual social relationships. We all have friends who share too frequently, sometimes to the point of being annoying or irritating; what if you suddenly become that person among your friends because someone else sponsors a post?

What if the inconsequential comment you make late at night because you know only a few friends are online gets elevated to an inane remark the next morning because a third party sponsored it and it gets blasted out to all of your friends?

Or what if the important things you really want your friends to see are deprecated because someone else thinks the animated GIF you shared is worth sponsoring instead of the post on digital rights?

Sponsored posts leave me with more questions than answers, but I guess we'll have to see how they work in practice to know those answers for sure.

Re: The Meta Meta Project

I voted for this, but then saw that it wasn't "actually Dan" but was instead "
the singularity… applying to the Knight News Challenge to further the machine agenda and get humans even more reliant on [them]." As I'm not a game designer or developer (and have never found any who had sufficient time to work on this question) I haven't managed to crack this problem, but I'd like to see it happen. This might be a first step.

[Please also see my entry, InvestigateNet, which would make information that is unobtainable by one set of journalists available via microcollaboration with peers with access. http://j.mp/INKNC12 ]

Re: EnviroFact

I like the notion of journalists collaborating for a better outcome and helping people make sense of what they hear and read and see.

This project actually sounds like one of the longer-term areas I'd like to explore for my ongoing project (and submission), InvestigateNet [ http://j.mp/INKNC12 ], which aims to make what's inaccessible information for one set of journalists available to them through microcollaboration with peers who have access.

We should talk about collaborating and whether members would be interested in participating.

Re: InvestigateNet: Microcollaboration for journalists

InvestigateNet has pages on other networks where you can also show your support for our project and continue to receive ongoing updates during the Knight News Challenge, and after it ends:

Facebook
Short URL j.mp/INVSTG8NETfb
Long URL facebook.com/InvestigateNet

Google+
Short URL j.mp/INVSTG8NETg
Long URL plus.google.com/b/104906431...

Re: InvestigateNet: Microcollaboration for journalists

You have it exactly right, Tom, and your example illustrates InvestigateNet's universal utility.

This isn't just about journalists in economically developed, wealthy countries (the North) helping peers in less-wealthy nations (the South) — the benefits extend to those of us in the prosperous North, too. For example, a journalist in a wealthy country may not have the budget or time to dedicate to exploring aspects of a story that are geographically removed, but a peer on location could fill you in with virtually no effort.

The idea is that these easy, quick collaborations would help a (possibly unknown) colleague elsewhere surmount what is an immediate and significant obstacle for him or her, and foster larger, deeper collaboration between journalists in the long run.

Thanks for your interest and for supporting InvestigateNet. I've been chipping away at it for a while, as obligations and finances permit. With a little help, I'll have a working version journalists can start testing this year.

Re: http://newschallenge.tumblr.com/post/19492303617

OK, I'm biased because I'm a part of the WJChat crew, but I still think it's worthwhile.

Re: InvestigateNet: Microcollaboration for journalists

Thanks, for your interest and feedback. I've been chipping away at InvestigateNet for almost five years. I'm grateful to those who have given their spare time to date, but it means that the project moves forward in fits and starts as volunteers come and go, and other work and life events and obligations take priority, when it could otherwise be fully operational by now.

Through this process, I have empirically discovered that reliably gaining the time and expertise needed to bring InvestigateNet to fruition requires a missing element: Funding. I've spent a few thousand dollars of my own money to research and develop InvestigateNet so far, and the feedback I keep receiving suggests that it's well-invested.

The Knight News Challenge offers the chance to facilitate the development and release of InvestigateNet, but whatever the outcome, I'll continue to work on it because everything I have seen so far suggests that it has great potential to solve a real problem that could enable journalism to flourish.

On an administrative note, this post appears to be a duplicate.
