However, I am sure that the Loeb family must of loved that sad individual.

But still, the point is that in today's climate in which our citizenry will not vote or become involved in the political process because many uniformally view their elected represenatives in distain, having unfit individuals like Mr. Ulery in Concord does not help the cause for an involved electorate.

Also, with all of the problems our commmunities and our state is facing, do we really need any elected representative that see his/her political office as a soapbox for fringe and irrelevant ideas,?

I would think not, since I feel that good governance is not there to entertain us, but to solve real problems in an adult, serious-minded and level-headed manner.

End of my soapbox.

Cheers.

Re: Nobel Peace Prize lost its prestige this year

Don Marquis was the Department Chair of the Social Studies Department when Thomaier was at his best. He and the librarian (Tommi Staples?) had frequent contact with him. (Do any of us know the real spelling?)

Alan wanted to "balance" the real world with the writings from his mentors on the Right. He would submit books to the library and to Don, requesting that the kids get the full story.

Finally Don offered Alan a chance to speak to the students, It fit in with the Cold War unit, and probably a hundred or more students came and listened to him explain his views and show his sources.

The next day the teachers de-briefed the kids; the almost universal reaction was "huh? Is he for real?"

After that Alan was apparently satisfied that he had had his chance, and it was no longer an issue in the department. (In all my personal dealings with him I thought Alan was a gentleman, but I was not present in those closed door meetings.)

That is the power of Free Speech. Those who listen get to evaluate the quality of the message if it is held to the pubic light and challenged.

That's the key. There must be someone to challenge a belief.

Don Marquis died last month, and I know many people appreciate all he did for Nashua.

Re: We expect too much from our government

Is this a tribal warfare thing. My children have Indian blood. Their great, great grandmother was a full blooded Indian from Nova Scotia. I'm not familiar with the tribe in Nova Scotia. He was on the BOE and I also believe he might have been an alderman (unsure about that, not in my district anyway) and his letters were marvelous works against anything and anyone that he considered remotely communistic. He railed and ranted almost weekly (the NT loved his letters as they usually got some response back in letters) and once even wrote how offended he was that the music being played on the July 4th celebration at Holman was written by a Russian. He said communist, but same thing to him.

He actually was against the Actor Singers presenting "Fiddler on the Roof" as it was ---- yep, you guessed it --- Communist. He didn't know S*** from Shinola about the story, the man who wrote the original story line, or a darn thing about it.

He was forever hounding the librarian at the Nashua High School for being "pink" since she didn't put up front and center all his books that he contributed showing how America was being duped by the Communists, and how the John Birch Society would show the citizens of America how to save the country. And it never, ever stopped. I made a project out of hunting down all that I could to counter what he wrote, and often it seemed as if he and I were doing hand-to-letter combat in the NT.

What I'm long-windedly saying is, this guy may be a thorn in Hudson's behind, but he has to go a long way to beat the late Alan Thomier IMO.

Re: Not all worthy of praise on this Veterans Day

AlexF, I think you missed the point that Mr. Heffernen was making. It isn't the people who work in the manufacturing of war equipment, it was the stores that have Veterans Day sales, and life going on as if it were just any other day.

After WWII, people honestly thought that war was pretty much over with, and the holiday was a big deal, with stores and almost everything else closed tight when Armistice Day came around.

We have had so many wars large and small (could Granada be any smaller war?) and this latest mess of 8 years and counting has worn many people down to the point that the day doesn't mean anywhere near what it did, and many of us have become numbed to the idea of once again waving flags and hurraying for it all.

And, please, spare me any comments about patriotism etc.

Re: - NashuaTelegraph.com

Article: "Steele instructed staff to inform the insurance carrier that the RNC wanted to opt out of elective abortion coverage, RNC spokeswoman Gail Gitcho said. I remember when this was a more hallowed day, but that was long ago. Our country has built itself into the megagiant business and even one day of everything except the necessities and the basics (mostly hospitals and such) shutting down would probably make our present economic disaster even worse.

When I railed and ranted against how even on Christmas Day so many places were doing business, I was reminded that 1) not everyone celebrated Christmas and 2) those restaurants and businesses that remained open were doing a service for those who had no other places to eat or get immediately needed items.

Over the years as I grew away from religion, I still feel that way about Christmas, but have, for the last two years, eaten Christmas dinner at the Lilac Garden. Go figure.

We simply have to make these special days more important by our own forms of observation and rememberance, and ignore the rest.

Re: We expect too much from our government

mikem wrote: "And of course, Ms. Goyait when she reaches the age of 62 and later, 65, will show her true "independent" and "honest" colors when she turns down those two superfluous government services for "undeserving" seniors called Social Security and Medicare."

YOU REALLY THINK SHE WILL?

Re: We expect too much from our government

Tesha, have you ever noticed that when a comment is not answerable with reason and logic or even with some honest personal info, that the tendency of people like whatistruth uses words such as "you are angry" and "arrogance" and "BS" and some others I just love are "you need to grow up" (said to someone they KNOW is old enough to be their grandma) and "your are so childish" all fit.

And just call a commentor on something that they really, really meant to be snarky but didn't have the balls to put it in snarky terms, and then they try and weasel out of it by claiming they had NO intention of anyone understanding it as they meant it.

It is obvious as heck that he was trying to make a snarky statement that obliquely insinuated that you might NOT be a citizen.

I come originally from Cherokee Indian country in North Georgia.

Re: We expect too much from our government

whatistruth wrote: Have you read the stimulus bill?
