Working with people that are differently "abled"; individuals who are austic and non verbal have taught me the importance of true courtesy and how important it is to value and appreciate others. A smile and a hello are everyday courtesies that make a difference to everyone. In small communities on the east coast everyone waves as they drive by ......it's contagious. I also like to pitch in and help out when a house guest. And I always adhere to the leave no trace rule of the woods ...being a considerate guest in the outdoors is important too.

Re: Could You Be Happy Either Way?: Letting Go of Getting What You Want

Beautifully stated, Danielle. I sometimes remind myself that adjusting my expectations and letting go to see how it feels creates the space for acceptance, contentment and yes, happiness.

Re: What's on your must-have list for fall fashion? boots - Petit Bateau - Foley and Corrina - vintage - Luchesse cowboy boots - wide leg jeans | Carrie and Danielle

Our East Coast fall weather requires layering and clever strategies that guise as spontaneity! A woven wrap designed and made by one of my dearest friends would be ideal for dealing with fickle weather in style. I'm in the market for some new and updated jeans....a "just right" dress for most occasions...and a whole new stable of sweaters from Frenchies (Carrie you would love Frenchies!!!). I'm craving a vintage day in Halifax with daughter, Ally ...a creative day of hunting, editing, and hopefully discovering something I wasn't even expecting to find.

Re: What’s the best concert you ever attended?

I haven't been to many concerts, but the one's I did go to were memorable. Peter Frampton at the CNE in Toronto - I was 16 and with some older friends. I hated the crowd - sweaty, strung out and doing lots of nasty stuff...... so in true Refined Adventure style I convinced my friends to break into Ontario Place next door where we could spread out and dance on the beautiful cool grass, under the stars and really enjoy the music. I still remember the excitement as we slipped through the locked turnstyles to escape the raunchiness of the crowd. My last concert was a hoot...while at a swimming training camp in Cocoa Beach, Florida we discovered the Beach Boys were giving a concert on the beach were we were staying. Our group was a mix of teens and adults...something about the Beach Boys seems to switch the roles up a bit.....middle aged mamas and pappas letting loose on the beach...the kids loved it! I think I would have preferred Jack Johnson for the music though!

Re: What do you find beautiful about your body?

I too get comments about my "pipes" ...often from younger men which I find slightly amusing because it comes across as awe. The first time someone said that to me I was totally confused - "what pipes"?? - "I can't sing"! They often say it before realizing it.....I think they forget I'm a 48 year old woman. My arms are not big but very well defined. Younger women ask me how to get arms like mine. Having that mind-body connection is so key to maximizing our energy and strength. Although I do not dance so much, I swim, bike, run and include yoga and pilates as well. I also have a husband that appreciates my derriere!

Re: What do you find beautiful about your body?

Definately my eyes.....for what they say about me, and what they do for me. The trip involves a diverse group of people from across Canada working together as a team. We had a training camp to meet some of our team mates this past weekend and it is certainly going to be challenging. Not only are people of varying abilities.....(some just got their bikes, and some are accomplished triathletes and adventure racers), and it's quite apparent that some are better at team work than others. On Sunday's training ride we had a dentist who was all about teamwork, a school pricipal and nurse that was not ...(hmmmm)....there are disciplined varsity athletes and wild and crazy young entrpreneurs....And then there is the weather and the terrain.... yes this will be an adventure for sure! Now if only I could get the fundraising happening in a big way. That said, your feeling tired, fatigued and "padded" remind me of snapshots of myself at different times and ages. At some point I recognized that my athletic lifestyle had became inconsistent, and fluctuated when other responsibilitiesor interests took priority. I needed to identify what level of activity/movement my body required and absolutely craved in order to be my strongest, healthiest self at every age. I have a theory that those of us that trained our bodies at a high intensity when young established a "set" point for maintenance that is difficult to keep up through all of life's events and stresses, and have to say that I personally need to consistently dedicate a fair amount of time to the cause. I've often kidded that retirement would be a great time to be a full time athlete! I've discovered that hours of sitting to sew, paint, read, or work on a computer make my body ache. I have also discovered that when I stop running for a few mornings in a row, my lower back starts to stiffen. This is my clue that running will be something that I "need" to keep doing as long as it makes me feel good. Listening to our bodies to understand our limitations is also important. It took me a while but I have come to understand that I need to exercise daily, the same way I need to eat daily. I don't own a scale, because my fitness is not about how much I weigh but about how I feel and how I move....... How wise to question one's self about how you want to feel. I would add to that, "what do you have to do to achieve your optimal health?".

Re: What’s your favorite easy thing to cook?

We have a local cheese maker that makes an Italian Havarti. I feel blessed that today I am celebrating my 26th wedding anniversary. Since I know so many wonderful people that have not been able to stay married so long, I never promised myself it would be forever, but rather that I would be committed to being happy in that marriage (not that the marriage should make me happy). Through all the glorious ups, and the unfortunate lows accepting responsibility for one's own happiness has been my north star. This promise has also helped me to realize that although we can contribute to someone elses' happiness we are ultimately not responsible for it, or own it.

Re: Soul Conscious: A Message from Dadi Janki

Thank you for this acknowledgement.
