The question I was really asking (which I realize I buried the lead on this one) is if a Tribe can be amassed around everything of if there are some things that a Tribe isn't created around. Whether it's not created because it's not necessary or the "cause" itself isn't one that resonates with it's group in a way that needs a Tribe in the way that Seth describes it in his book.

I look at things like art movements that are, for the most part, autonomous. There is always a couple of people that "lead" the movement, but it's never a formalized Tribe that's being led yet art movements accomplish a tremendous amount without any formal planning and those involved "opt-in" to be a part of it. The same with music and other forms of artistic expression.

Comedy is one such expression and while it's constantly changing and evolving in a way that reflects society itself there doesn't seem to ever be a "Tribe" created around it in the way that Seth Godin describes it. Which makes me wonder if that's because artistic expressions and movements don't need a "formalized Tribe because it would inhibit what they are all about OR is it because their very nature and the people filling them wouldn't respond to a Tribe?

Re: Olivier Blanchard owes me a highlighter, Social Media ROI Review

Thanks Ivan,

Books like that aren't made often enough in my opinion.

Re: The Button Wars, Coming To A Blog Near You

I agree with you in spirit, but there are 2 things I see that could make the decision harder to make.

#1 other companies could start adding analytics to their buttons. Data such as the number of secondary likes, shares, RTs, posts, etc. past your site that your content gets.

#2 Companies could not allow Share This to connect to them and so if you want the functionality and perceived benefits of buttons like +K or +1 you have to make the decision on which ones to install.
It would be better for all mankind if they would allow Share This to add them to their list and if they end up offering stats it would be a good opportunity for Share This to have a larger dashboard offering for paid accounts, but that's a rabbit hole of a conversation on it's own.

Re: Flying Is No Longer Fun

Absolutely it would require getting the right people. That's probably the heart of the whole issue right now if you track it back far enough. They have the wrong people running the place. Look at how places like SWA and JetBlue run their business. Much different because it's ran by much different people.

Re: Flying Is No Longer Fun

I haven't had what I could call a "good" flying experience in years, and the problems are different with all the airlines. Delta is, in my opinion, the worst of them all. I will pay more, drive farther, and do almost anything that is out of my way to avoid flying with them. The only time they begrudgingly get my service is when I just don't have another choice.

The best thing, IMHO, for all of them to do is a complete overhaul of how their companies work and the systems that are in place. The overhaul would start with "giving a crap" and then move on to daily procedures, operations, and even gate mapping so fewer people have to rush to their connecting flights.

Re: I love your brand so much, I got the t-shirt

I think it's so funny to see these shirts in the stores. There are very few brands I would give money to in order to become their walking billboard. [CHART]

The labels involved in the suit are just looking for a scapegoat so the don't have th point the finger at themselves. File sharing was just one of the things that assisted the decline. Indie labels sprung up left and right (and still are), bands can create and promote easier on their own now than they could 10 years ago, and fans don't give a crap who the label is so there is no "brand loyalty" to them. Fans care about music and bands, not what label puts out the music. Besides a few indie labels owned by bands I like and the bands they promote, I can't tell you who any of the bands I like are with.

My loyalty isn't to the label, it's to the band. So I don't care about the label and because I don't care about the label I'll follow a band no matter what label they're on. Major, indie, or even self produced. I buy music by bands that aren't on labels.

In the end, labels are loosing money because we have more choices these days than a handful of record labels and what they choose to release and anyone can make and release music to the world. I honestly don't think they'll ever completely recover, their strangle hold on what music gets made and released to the world is long gone.

Re: Goldman Sachs says Social Media has little effect on what you buy

True, it won't force you to buy their products, but how many brand pages do you like that you don't actually like or use their product in the first place? I'll never like Pepsi's page because I don't like their product. However social networks (more specifically the people I"m connected to on them) definitely influence certain areas of my shopping habits.

Re: Goldman Sachs says Social Media has little effect on what you buy

That is pretty much the exact same thought process I had when I saw this. The whole thing is so vague that it makes giving an honest answer to it difficult. For a good 60+% of my online shopping I don't rely on social media to help make a decision. The other 40% I rely on it heavily, BUT that 40% also typically costs more than the other 60%. It's a tough thing to answer and Goldman Saches didn't do a very good job in defining any parameters of the survey.

Re: Goldman Sachs Report: Social Networks Have The Least Influence On Online Shopping Activity

I couldn't find it anywhere either. I always find polls like this where demographics are hidden to be highly suspicious. You poll my grandparents and their friends and you'll get an entirely different set of numbers than if you asked us. Not to mention the way they phrased the question could be playing into the results as well. For the majority of my online shopping social networks don't really play into my shopping habits, but high ticket items it absolutely does.

It's a bad survey because the question is vague and the demographics are unknown.

Re: Goldman Sachs Report: Social Networks Have The Least Influence On Online Shopping Activity

I think we need more info, like what demographic did it poll and what questions did they ask? My friends who are heavy FB & TWT users constantly ask for advice on high end electronics, but not much on clothes and groceries. My parents on the other hand (who do use FB) don't ever ask online, they just pick up the phone and call me (and then I ask online if I don't have the info / opinion on it).

Re: ChromeDeck, it’s TweetDeck for Google Chrome

Thanks for the comment, the layout is what I struggled with at first too.
