Yes you need the simcard to activate the phone. To get around that use PwnageTool and hacktivate the phone, it doesn't affect the vodafone sim at all.

They have stated at this time that they can not see a hole in the 02.28.00 baseband. That doesn't mean there isn't one. But updating to 02.28.00 after all their warnings was a foolish move if you were hoping to unlock.

There is no difference in the packages, all the IPSW's are identical. The lock is a standard NCK lock. Look it up on theiphonewiki.com

How hard would it be to write our own tool to restore ipsw images (not through iTunes)? You know, through MobileDevice, for use with pwned devices.

The dev-team did release xpwn for Windows. And I'm sure some of the Mac users interested in this would have a Windows box somewhere at home, I browse from a Windows machine at work. Most of the OSx86 users would be browsing from Windows as well until a release is made.

In my experience Safari is much faster at rendering websites than Firefox. But I still use Firefox because of it's extension system.
