I don't "cold email" for a job because I'm a freelance financial writer and I'm not interested in a conventional paycheck. However, I do a ton of cold emailing for information. I pretty much follow your suggestions in getting information and interviews for my writing. And it always works. Yesterday afternoon I sent a brief request for some information to the "new media" representative of one of the big United Nations independent agencies. She didn't have the answers to my questions. But she gave a long list of OUTSTANDING links that I could use for find what I needed. And that was great. I don't want a game show host in the White House. I don't know or care if he's nice. Under his leadership the U.S. government will bring the American economy to its knees 15% to 20% more slowly than the Republicans would. In politics you pick from the choices that are REALLY there, or you don't matter. In the Florida Primary I voted for Barack Obama because I liked Hillary Clinton less. In the election I voted for Barack Obama because I liked John McCain less. (Remember when John McCain said he thought the economy was "just fine." He just couldn't remember how many houses he owned.)

All I ask is that Barack Obama refrain from starting a nuclear war to "get the economy going." I suspect all the Republican candidates past, present and future are prepared to touch off the thermonuclear extermination of life on earth to bring in $5,000 in campaign contributions and get a few corporate jobs for their unemployable children.

I don't think Obama is quite that bad.

Face it, Amerka is the world's biggest failed state. I can't say "richest" because it hasn't had any real money in the Treasury since Eisenhower moved out of the Oval Office.

I don't think Obama will incinerate the earth. This tragedy took place in area that is well known as a corridor used by elephants. If 15 or 20 miles of this train's tracks through the most important and most used portion of the elephant corridor were to be elevated by a railway trestle or similar structure, most of the elephants could pass safely below it.

The World Bank offers grants for this kind of project under its Global Environmental Facility (GEF). Personally, I think that everything a PR does for a company should clearly further the objectives of the company. If PRs could focus on that concept -- and many do -- it would benefit both them and their clients.

IN THE COMMENTS ABOVE, "Gregorylent" said that if you're into manipulation you suck but if you're into service you add something. Well said. I think this is getting down to the essence of it all.

Yes, PR does need to promote itself to the outside world. But is also fairly important for the industry to focus on serving the needs of its clients. By that I mean, helping the company achieve its own objectives.

REG CROWDER
Freelance Financial and Investment Writer
London, England and Brittany, France
http://www.journalistdirect...

Re: Print Week: Bridgestone reveals e-paper innovations

I agree. What they are doing with this stuff in Japan seems to make a whole lot of sense.

I'm pretty sure it isn't e-paper but I am seeing an APPLICATION along these lines in a few shopping center parking lots in western France (Brittany).

They are not terribly big billboards. They depend upon the vibrance of the color and the light emitting qualities of whatever is generating the image for their appeal. And the appeal is genuine. The images are a lot more compelling than conventional billboards that depend upon reflected light from sunlight or artificial illumination.

I'm sorry I can't tell WHAT is generating the images. They're a bit too high for me to analyze the image and I always forget to bring my 1200 mm telephoto lens to the supermarket when I go shopping for dog food. (It looks a bit like a shoulder-launched rocket and I really don't want to get that Gendarmes THAT excited.)

It might be a very big LCD screen or maybe some flexible (and huge) film-type transparency being moved by motors in front of a light source.

I watched the construction activity leading up to the installation of several of these things at Carrefour in Guingamp. The underground cable conduits connecting the billboards to whatever they are connected to are MUCH BIGGER than would be required for either a conventional billboard or a huge video screen. Possibly this indicates an intention to upgrade the technology in the future.

But I gotta tell 'ya, the application works. These things look good.

REG CROWDER
Freelance Financial and Investment Writer
London, England and Brittany, France
http://www.journalistdirect...
http://knol.google.com/k/re...

Re: Cuil might just be cool enough to become the Google-killer in search

Hey, Cuil is interesting. (Although in a few seconds I will call it a theory.)

Based upon Return on Invested Capital (ROI) over five years, producing a hit CD might be more profitable than producing a CD on Jamaican polka music. But it might not.
There are lot of singers who had hit records and/or CDs once who today try to scrape a living out of starring in the lowest priced lounges of second-string casinos in Reno, Nevada. That kind of thing happens to music producers as well, although that may have more to do with the price of nose candy than tail shapes and numbers.

If I wanted to get into the Jamaican polka niche, I'd start out with a fairly inexpensive CD and experiment with cheap but effective marketing. I might try out a few different Jamaican polka titles, "Bob Marley's Wost Nightmare," "Roll Out the Ganja and We'll Have a Barrel of Fun," "Don't Shoot the Accordionist, He Has a Machete Under His Shirt," and so on.

If nothing took off, I'd drop the whole thing, taking a small loss. (Try that with Madonna some time. It doesn't work.)

If the Jamaican polka franchise "had legs," I'd roll out more CDs. Then a souvenir book. Then a boxed set of CDs with a few publicity photos included as a bonus. T-shirts, hoodie shirts and parkas. Coffee mugs. A Jamaican polka recipe book. A coffee table book on the history of Jamaican polka. A syndicated show on cable and satellite. A road show. You get the picture.

The spirit of your original post is quite on target. "Long tail" is not a Law of Economics. (They aren't all correct, either.) It is a theory. It helps us know WHERE TO LOOK for the facts (which may or may not be there). As for being "predictive," not a chance.

REG CROWDER
[Freelance Finance and Investment Writer]

Re: Is the Daily Mirror worthless?

An interesting look at the whole thing. I hate to gum up the works (okay, I lied -- I LOVE gumming up the works) but: There is the matter of the time value of money. The right to receive a pound sterling in 2013 is not worth as much as the right to received a pound sterling today. So, a comparison of real market value today with hypothetical market value doesn't tell us as much as it sounds.

The comparison with the British steel industry in the latter part of the 20th century is quite relevant, however. I think it is safe to say the steel industry was wrecked by senior management who acted solely in own personal interests, at the expense of the shareholders.

I think that is pretty much the story for many of the major media properties today (Conrad Black somehow comes to mind).

Let us recall that the destruction of the British steel industry didn't reduce the consumption of steel. Anybody who has to have steel, STILL HAS TO HAVE STEEL. They just go somewhere else to get it.

The same goes for media properties.

I don't know what, if anything, the management of Trinity Mirror is up to these days. But if they leave a vacuum in the print business, filling it will be a lot easter, cheaper and faster than building and modernizing steel mills.

Re: Banks Bet With Employee Insurance Premiums, Lose.

I'M GOING TO BE LOOKING INTO BANK OWNED LIFE INSURANCE (BOLI) FOR A FEW DAYS. And when the Bush-Cheney crime syndicate finishes its "judicial cleansing" to root out the remnants of integrity still hanging on in the U.S. District Courts and Magistrates Courts (the appeals courts and the Supreme Court are beyond saving), that species is gone for ever.

Anyway, Congratulations Planet Earth!
