Eamonn here, reporting live from my hole in the ground. Allow me to explain my apparently egregious word choices, because your harsh comments make me deeply sad inside. (They don't bother me at Yahoo!, but you guys are supposed to be my friends! What gives?!)

I went with abstract and nebulous because IU, sprawling, huge institution that it is, can sometimes seem to exist regardless of the people running it. If Knight chooses to view it that way, fine, but my point is that IU the school isn't responsible for how the story ended; Knight, and Myles Brand, and various other folks no longer employed there are. I promise I wasn't trying to be a poser. I probably just could have gone with "sprawling," but sometimes I type very fast in order to get all my work done. It happens.

Relatively momentous was used because I believe a thing can have varying degrees of momentousness; my dog not crapping in the house today is momentous to me, but in the lifetime development of my dog -- or the continued development and progress of the human race -- only barely so. See what I mean here? "Relatively" is a way to provide context. Not everyone cares about IU basketball, you see.

And anyway why are you guys being so picky? Is not the point of the post itself more important than word choice, which as far as I know is marginally subjective? (Did I choose those two correctly?)

Also, um, GF Dave, I'm one of the founding three members of this here blog, and while my contributions this offseason have been nil I'll be writing The Morning After et. al. again starting in the fall. Until then, you won't have to deal with my poser ass. In the meantime, I'll be "working on my craft."

Thanks for reading! Love y'all!

Re: Selena Roberts’s Books Sales Unimpressive, But Does A-Rod Really Win?

This is an excellent post. I'm not as concerned with controversial opinions as I am an overall tactical analysis, I guess, but that's where we differ. That happens. I think there's one thing we can agree on: Andy Gray excels at both, and that's why he's so very good. (Can ESPN steal him again, please?)

Anyway, thanks for responding. Iowa can't fill a student section to save their lives. Illinois kids have to fundraise just for the chance to get student tickets, and their entire stadium is sold out and cloaked in bright orange every single game. I hate me some Illinois, but it's hard to call their fan base "average"; it's nowhere near as awful as Iowa's.

Second: The whole point of Ryan's piece, or at least part of it, was to drive home the idea that most students are fairweather fans. Most students aren't going to sit in the balcony to watch IU play Penn State in the middle of the day on Saturday, nor are most IU students going to buy season tickets, $220 or not. Think about the percentages here. If there are 36,000 undergrads at IU, and Assembly Hall seats about 8,000 students, that's only a fraction of the student population that even has an interest in season tickets in the first place. When the team is horrible, you're going to lose a fraction of the latter group around the margins.

Complaining about "real fandom" or "supporting the team through thick and thin" or whatever else is nice. It makes emotional sense, especially to people like us, who spend time blogging about sports. Clearly, we care. But everyone else is a swing voter, and there isn't a single student section in the country that wouldn't experience similar loss if their team was playing at roughly the level of IPFW. It's just reality.

Oh, and to plenty of students, $220 is $220, whether you pay for it now or in five years. That's not cheap to most people, least of all people who are, say, working themselves through school, or at the very least have to work part time for their spending money. Not everyone can get Mom and Dad to plunk for basketball tickets, strange as that may seem.

Re: Iowa Broadcaster Loses Job Over Internet Photos

I suppose it was left unsaid, because I didn't think it needed to be said, but duh. Ed Podolak shouldn't be so drunk he can't see people taking photos of himself peering down women's shirts. Clear? Clear.

And yet again, I'll repeat it: There is an argument to be made for posting the photos. There is also an argument to be made for not posting them, I guess, but if faced with similar circumstances, we might have posted them. It's just the lack of responsibility taken in the Wiz's second post that irks more than anything.

And finally, I'm not sure why we can't blame Iowa's adminstrators for being, as you say, humorless and soulless. They get a pass on that? They're allowed to fire (or, apparently, suspend) a guy for doing a completely harmless thing -- drinking in public and flirting with apparently consenting women while doing so -- without being called out for being soulless? That doesn't seem fair.

I'd apportion the responsibility here as follows:

(i) Podolak: 40%
(ii) Soulless Iowa types: 40%
(iii) Us Internet cretins: 20%

Re: Iowa Broadcaster Loses Job Over Internet Photos

First of all, you're right: Podolak had the chance to keep his job, according to the Gazette, but as he didn't want to deal with a suspension or reprimand, decided to leave instead. We'll add that to the post in a second, and thank you for bringing it to my attention, as I hadn't seen it when I wrote the post yesterday afternoon.

That said, The Wiz of Odds brought the photos to a larger audience, message boards or not, and I fail to see how that decision didn't lead, in one way or another, to Podolak eventually losing his job. It did, whether he made the final decision, or the administration did. And one more time, because it bears repeating: There is a precedent for posting stuff like this and I'm not wholly opposed to it -- I just found the Wiz's lack of condolences in his follow-up post to be really cold and off-putting. If you're going to start a firestorm, deal with the repercussions.

Re: Buckethead Pens Tracks In Honor Of LeBron James

If Chuck Klosterman wrote your physics textbook: "Relatively speaking, gravity pulls everything down. It also follows that teams can afford to be less careful with the ball against Indiana, and so they are -- the games aren't tightly contested matchups but more similar, for top-tier teams, to some sort of JV scrimmage. Sloppy begets sloppy.

Great work, R.

Re: The Big Ten Continues To Be One Giant Pile Of Failure In Bowl Games

www.theonion.com/content/no...

Re: The Greatest Rock Band 2 Beastie Boys “So What’cha Want” Performance.
