It really is the defacto seo plugin for WordPress. We haven't really stacked it up against other plugins that are out there. WordPress SEO by Yoast is also a really well supported plugin as well.

Re: 5 reasons why your web design résumé sucks

I respect that and agree to a point but I try not to think in absolutes... there are plenty of UI designers that are beyond talented that can not code. My suggestion was simply a way to give some life to a bland résumé. I would not disqualify someone simply because they didn't build their own site, I would much rather see updated information and not assume that this person was just lazy.

Also this was more about the résumé than the portfolio, see #1, I think it is assumed you will have one.

Re: 5 reasons why your web design résumé sucks

That is really cool that you feel that way, thank you!

Re: Dreamweaver CS4 vs Coda – Search Smack Down

Dreamweaver is probably going to be better if you have never worked with sites before. It will do a good job of showing you the site as you build it and let you click on elements to see where it code you are.

I love Coda, but if you have never coded before it might be a little harder to learn starting with Coda.

Using Dreamweaver and Photoshop has some advantages, there is some functionality that you would not get if you used Coda to build your sites.

Re: How-to use Hovercards using @anywhere

Clever... :)

Re: WordCamp Miami lights a fire

No, Thank you Mallory.... you just made my day! I don't want to see everything above the fold, but I do want to see the goals of the site consider when designing above the fold. Funny enough I already commented on the lifebelow600 thread: http://iampaddy.com/lifebel... see if we agree :)

I'm mixed on the mobile, we have a version of this site ready for mobile that we have not turned on yet. I do think there are many cases where a mobile versions should be served up if that user agent is detected but like ours include a link to the standard site. I think that is a good balance, because you are right there are larger screen devices coming out like the iPad but I still think small form factors will dominated the mobile space. So those on the go people in most cases will be looking for specific data, the easier you can serve the better.

Thanks for the nice words on the site, we appreciate it!

Re: Screens are getting bigger… and smaller

It is a funny thing you mentioned that, we tried to figure out a way to fade the sides properly but it is not as simple as using png because the image as png was coming out to some around 3MB but we changed it a little bit to cover the really large monitors. We still need to do the inner pages but the main banner should be covered now.

Thanks for commenting!

Re: Scrapblog Raises Another $2.5 Million For Online Scrapbooking

Not sure if you noticed but you can build it online and then have it mailed to you. I doubt many people would want to waste their time to build it online only to have it mailed to them to rebuild. The design on this page is perfect (beautiful) for this audience, but if it were for a ski resort it would be "Pointless" because the lack to actions above the fold.

I just have two points; first content above the fold we will always be seen more, again this is a fact and can't really be disputed. Second, just because you have a scroll wheel doesn't mean everyone else does... I think for the last couple years laptops have outpaced desktop sales so I think the ease with which you insinuate users will be able to scroll might not be there for everyone. They might come to the site and think "o that is a pretty iceberg" and miss all your great content because they can't scroll as easily and aren't checking to see if there is a scrollbar..

Re: Life Below 600px | I Am Paddy

I understand and agree with your post but I think you are partially wrong. Using this very page as an example this is what I see on my 13" MBP http://grab.by/27B1

Now I understand you designed it to drive home your point but simple fact of the matter is content below the fold will be viewed less. There is no way around it. I am not suggesting that you have to fit everything above the fold, that is silly, but a header like the one on this page is pointless and yet we are seeing more and more sites like that.

I think your 37s example was a great example, they know that most people are going to go to their site to get to their other products... they want to drive people to their other products, hence the reason why it is above the fold with clear links to their products. In fact the above the fold could have been just as fine being a landing page. They know that, that is why they have a rule where the fold is... If someone is looking for more they will scroll other wise probably 90% of the people that land on that page are clicking to a product page.

"Entice them in, make them actively want to scroll and read on" That to me is the big point, make sure they know there is something below the fold but also be aware of your goals. If it is to get someone to book a flight make sure you have the quick book above the fold. Having a primarily empty header with nothing keying the user that there is more content below is a slipper slope. I have a feeling if there was a design like that for an audience that is not that web savvy the bounce rate for users with monitors sub 800px tall would be extremely high.

Great article by the way, this seems like a topic that will never die or have a right answer.

Re: ∞ Prediction: Apple to release two tablets, and other prognostications

I don't see two versions coming out at all. This is not a phone... the necessity for a cell signal is not there and the cost involved with including a cell chip does not require the phone to be subsidized. Yes you are right that they did it with the iPhone/Touch but that is because one of them was billed as a phone and in order to use its primary function you needed the plan.

I could definitely see them offering a subsidized price but that would be silly to make two different versions.... You make one version, without contract is two hundred more and if you add a cell signal down the road you can without a contract. Hopefully they will sell this like the Nexus is being sold... if you want the contract you pay less upfront and if not you get to enjoy it sans cell signal (until you change your mind)

Re: Apple Q4 Results: Another Big Quarter, More Macs And iPhones Sold Than Ever Before

You would think for a company that has consistently launching innovative products for the last ten years or so you would cut them some slack.

The iMac was 1998... Silverlight is skipping the timeline based BS that flash started with and is going directly after what Flash is now trying to target.

At the end of the day if Silverlight desktop apps have an advantage over Air apps and Flex apps because of their relationship with the OS I can see adobe at a disadvantage that could potential entice people to build the next gen apps (cloud) with SL.

Re: Why would a designer need to use Subversion ?

If you happen to be on MediaTemple a good alternative to using BeanStalk is using your MT space. http://kb.mediatemple.net/q...

You won't have the nice web based interface nor the email notifications about updates but if you just want a basic SVN this will do the trick.

Re: Paper.com Office

Colorless.

Re: 10 things a web designer would never tell you

@rama - The whole article is a joke, you shouldn't disagree on the first you should disagree on all of them.
Paul - You really need to put a smiley face or a note about doing the opposite, I would show this to some clients but they wouldn't get it.
Great post, we have all been down these roads.

Re: Gary Vaynerchuk - Help pick the topic of Gary’s upcoming talk at...

Hey Gary,

1) I'll be there so my suggestion has more value :)
2) I always have a ton of ideas but I would like to hear your thoughts on when you know an idea is worth pursuing and I'm not talking about "do what you love" type stuff I'm talking about market analysis, trends, etc... knowing when you have an idea that you can actually make money on.

Re: When you fail, it’s time to try again

I'm definitely mixed on this, Elliott knows the idea so you have to factor that in to why he would agree to any terms. Also consider if he spends 150-200 hours on this project at a reasonable rate, say $80 per hour that is $16,000 at the highend. So if everything goes according to plan he could get paid for his work plus a healthy flow of cash. Plus if the numbers are accurate Elliott should have time to work on other projects that have more traditional pay structures to balance everything out.

The one thing I'm confused about, is why Elliott working for free and Ryan doesn't. With a 90/10 split I would assume that Ryan's nominal management fee doesn't need to be taken out off the top. Ryan's time imo should not be considered a loan to the project because of the 90/10 split.

All in all success will quiet these issue, Elliott I'm sure will do a great job and Caronified will work hard to make it a success.
