This trumped up story has nothing to do with the valor of military service and everything to do with pissed off homosexuals getting back at Bob Vander Plaats. Nice try, Carolyn.

Bob Eikleberry (a.k.a “Mongo”) is the owner of the Blazing Saddle. Bob has long been an institution in the Des Moines Gay Community. Mongo’s credentials include Founder of the All Iowa AIDS Benefit, Founding Father of the Imperial Court of Iowa, and senior member of the CornHauler Levi & Leather Club, so you can see that he’s been around a while. Since his retirement, Bob can be seen at the Saddle regularly working on one project or another – Watch out for that nail gun!

Dumb article. Did anybody say heterosexual marriages would disintegrate upon the legalization of SSM in Iowa???

Let's see some long term studies on the effects of SSM on children adopted into such unions. They're out there...do your homework!

You're wrong again. If the state (taxpayers) is footing the bill for people's behavioral consequences, or telling them how to live to avoid such consequences, then everything is on the table, including homosexuality. No religion involved...that wasn't so hard now, was it?

Oh, and the difference between you and an ape is that you have free will and reasoning. You can deduce that your actions may cause you trouble down the road and choose not to take your pants off.

List the pros and cons of sex within the confines of heterosexual marriage, and then the pros and cons of promiscuity, gay or straight.

Well, yes, all things being relative, Iowa doesn't rank too high but I still think taxpayers would be interested in knowing how much the state is forking out to cover these meds.

Soft drink taxes are coming...Type 1 Diabetes is genetic...and nobody intentionally sets out to wreck a car. But still, those things will receive greater public scrunity than the self-destructive homosexual lifestyle. It's unfair and makes no sense.

I wouldn't call 100 new cases of HIV per year a "low incident for HIV."

Doesn't anybody care that the state is paying $8-10K for persons who, in large part, have a disease they could have prevented getting?

The state is cracking down on smokers and people who don't wear seatbelts but nothing is ever said about homosexuals and the costly consequences of their behavior. That's discrimination - or special treatment, depending on how you look at it.

From Lynda Waddington's more recent story on HIV prescriptions:

“With our current system the way it is, if the program doesn’t constantly receive increases in funding, we’re always going to run into this problem,” said Holly Hanson, Ryan White Part B program manager for the Iowa Department of Public Health. “Flat funding will never work for us because the medications are good and people are living longer with this disease — which is a good thing — but diagnosis [of new cases] remains steady.”

"In short, funding has mostly remained at a consistent level since the 2005 increases due to state appropriations, but the numbers of people seeking assistance has continued to climb. Iowa has roughly 100 new individuals diagnosed as HIV positive each year. Nebraska diagnoses roughly 40 per year. For each individual receiving assistance, the states estimate they spend between $8,000 to $10,000 a year."

Maybe so. Doesn't change the facts surrounding my co-worker's premature death.

I'm curious, too, about the two eastern Iowa men who died of H1N1 who had "personal" circumstances that contributed to their deaths. Gee, I wonder what that could be.

Sure! In fact, I worked with one for one day in Iowa City. He called in sick my second day on the job, never came back to work and died a few months later. He was in his early-to-mid fifties. It was AIDS. Gay hairdresser.
