Education is in my opinion more critical in diabetes than any other disease, because it is a disease about control. Many people I know don't realize they have it until complications arise. When complications occur you are basically behind the curve. I think education about diabetes is one of the most neglected aspects of the disease. Thanks for the comments.

Re: Diabetes Tip: What is your A1c?

It is a single test, typically taken every three months. What the test does is test for glucose traces on hemoglobin in your red blood cells. A red blood cell typically lives for 3 months (thats why the test is usually taken once every three months). The amount of glucose attached to your hemoglobin over the life of your red blood cells gives a good indicator of how much glucose has been in your blood stream over the past three months.

My a1c has pretty much been dead on with my own records of my sugar levels that I record daily.

Re: Being Healthy Can Benefit You Even When You Get Sick

Teresa,
Thanks. Its what makes this country what it is. I spent 2.5 years in Cuba and was in the military for 10 years, so I know how awesome this country is. Everyone in the world cannot say what is on their mind, especially politically and be protected as opposed to oppressed by the government.

What I didn't know as an African American is just how authentic, we, the American people really are. How this country truly is a reflection of the ideals of our founding fathers, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that ALL men are created equal". As someone who is African American, I had become somewhat cynical about that ideal. Now I cannot.

My goal now is to deal with those within my culture to realize Obama's election is not an opportunity for us to get excited about what we won't have to do, but to get excited about the work to be done. Everybody is getting excited, but many of us need to realize that we are in a "no excuses" mode within our community (the African American community). I wonder who we will call the man, "holdin us down", now?

In one night, the belief that anyone in America can be and do anything they want if they just roll up their sleeves and get to work has now been proven unequivocally. ANYONE, regardless of their race who does not believe that to be the case is a fool. This is the GREATEST country in the world, PERIOD.

Re: Eating Healthy On The Go: Chick-Fil-A

Ashleigh,
Thank you for the compliment and thank you all for the food that you provide. I agree wholeheartedly. Stress can come from a variety of ways. And it does seem like it is almost impossible to find ways to de-stress. One of the things I did was pre-plan a quarterly getaway day. I go to a hotel room. I take the battery out of my cell phone and disconnect for the weekend. I order room service and do nothing, PERIOD. It was so life changing that I did the same for my wife and included a spa treatment.

My wife is all of the things you outline above. I truly appreciate her. As a husband I think it is part of my responsibility as her partner to look out for her. When you have all of those roles and are in the middle of them. It sometimes takes someone who care for you to tap you on the shoulder and say, "Hey, take a break".

Hazelluis, do you have any de-stress ideas?

Re: Barack Obama and Osama Bin Laden

Hi PatrickPete -

> So at minimum, McCain's choice of friends clearly could come into question. Ohh!, that is what we are talking about here isn't it? Associations and friends.

The significant difference is that McCain was an associate of Keating before the scandal.

Obama chose to be involved with Ayers after all he did, and was undeterred even after the NY Times piece on 9/11/01 where Ayers stated "I don't regret setting bombs" and "I feel we didn't do enough".

Obama remained in touch with Ayers for several years after these statements.

You won't find my defending Bob Jones University, but I also don't think this is a comparable situation.

It was a camapign stop, not a relationship. No different than all of the politicians who make stops at the NAACP - recall in 2000 that they ran the ad about George W. Bush and James Byrd.
