Education is in my opinion more critical in diabetes than any other disease, because it is a disease about control. Many people I know don't realize they have it until complications arise. When complications occur you are basically behind the curve. I think education about diabetes is one of the most neglected aspects of the disease. Thanks for the comments.

Re: Diabetes Tip: What is your A1c?

It is a single test, typically taken every three months. What the test does is test for glucose traces on hemoglobin in your red blood cells. A red blood cell typically lives for 3 months (thats why the test is usually taken once every three months). The amount of glucose attached to your hemoglobin over the life of your red blood cells gives a good indicator of how much glucose has been in your blood stream over the past three months.

My a1c has pretty much been dead on with my own records of my sugar levels that I record daily.

Re: Being Healthy Can Benefit You Even When You Get Sick

Teresa,
Thanks. Its what makes this country what it is. I spent 2.5 years in Cuba and was in the military for 10 years, so I know how awesome this country is. Everyone in the world cannot say what is on their mind, especially politically and be protected as opposed to oppressed by the government.

What I didn't know as an African American is just how authentic, we, the American people really are. How this country truly is a reflection of the ideals of our founding fathers, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that ALL men are created equal". As someone who is African American, I had become somewhat cynical about that ideal. Now I cannot.

My goal now is to deal with those within my culture to realize Obama's election is not an opportunity for us to get excited about what we won't have to do, but to get excited about the work to be done. Everybody is getting excited, but many of us need to realize that we are in a "no excuses" mode within our community (the African American community). I wonder who we will call the man, "holdin us down", now?

In one night, the belief that anyone in America can be and do anything they want if they just roll up their sleeves and get to work has now been proven unequivocally. ANYONE, regardless of their race who does not believe that to be the case is a fool. This is the GREATEST country in the world, PERIOD.

Re: Eating Healthy On The Go: Chick-Fil-A

Ashleigh,
Thank you for the compliment and thank you all for the food that you provide. I agree wholeheartedly. Stress can come from a variety of ways. And it does seem like it is almost impossible to find ways to de-stress. One of the things I did was pre-plan a quarterly getaway day. I go to a hotel room. I take the battery out of my cell phone and disconnect for the weekend. I order room service and do nothing, PERIOD. It was so life changing that I did the same for my wife and included a spa treatment.

My wife is all of the things you outline above. I truly appreciate her. As a husband I think it is part of my responsibility as her partner to look out for her. When you have all of those roles and are in the middle of them. It sometimes takes someone who care for you to tap you on the shoulder and say, "Hey, take a break".

Hazelluis, do you have any de-stress ideas?

Re: Barack Obama and Osama Bin Laden

Shawn,
One thing I can say is that at least you allow the dialogue on your blog. I can respect that even though I completely disagree with your views and characterizations of Barack Obama. In response to your reply to my post.

I think I stated that while I could call McCain's character into question based on the issues exposed by the revelation of his first marriage and subsequent divorce, I wouldn't. In fact that is exactly what I said in my post.

With respect to the Keating Five incident. It was not as simple as an acquittal and clearing of all charges. It is true no charges were brought, BUT the ethics committee did cite McCain for poor judgement. In fact, the main reason why charges were not brought against him was because he was in the House at the time and was then a Senator when the S &L debacle occurred.

It should be pointed out that McCain was the ONLY one who was friends with Keating. In fact, Keating and McCain's family were very close to the point that Keating had done business with McCain's wife's family, also. So at minimum, McCain's choice of friends clearly could come into question. Ohh!, that is what we are talking about here isn't it? Associations and friends.

To be truthful, there is not much I can say about the Fannie Mae issue though. Jim Johnson and Frank Raines is a hit on Obama. So I must concede on that issue.

I think the Bush thing can stand on its own. I don't believe in calling anyone a racist. I let the associations speak for itself. I think that is your point with this site, right? My point is Bush went somewhere and associated with a university that clearly expoused and believed in principles steeped in at minimum racist overtones (I personally believe they are overt). The question is since you think Obama is like Osama Bin Laden because he worked on education reform in the urban community with someone who engaged in terrorist activity when Obama was 8. What do you call Bush when he associated with a univerisity that refused to admit blacks students until 1971 (point of note: this is around the same time Ayers was being a terrorist). And this was outlawed in 1970.

I could go on and on about Bob Jones Unviersity, but the point is that associations are flimsy grounds for questioning a person's ability to be president unless those associations can be clearly identified as being critical to that person making decisions that are connected to the presidency. The Ayers thing is flimsy. The Johnson/Raines association is one that I would have more of an issue, but that is just me. Unless you have something on Obama working with Ayers to bomb a federal building. Now that would be news.

Re: Barack Obama and Osama Bin Laden

Shawn,
I find it interesting that you all seem to make it a point to discuss questionable character issues with respect to Obama, but appear to not do the same for McCain. I also find it surprising that you of all people can't find anything online with the "kill him" statement even though there appears to be video on the The Huffington Post blog of all places (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/06/mccain...).

McCain has some questionable character issues in my opinion, just as you have opinions about Obama, but that is all they are. Our opinions. McCain divorced his first wife after she suffered a horrible accident. One could draw conclusions about his character from that, but I wouldn't do that because I don't know enough about it to do so.

McCain was part of the Keating Five. I could post an extensive amount of information on that situation, but it would take up half this screen. Needless to say, the Senate criticized McCain for poor judgement. The only reason he wasn't cited was because he was a member of the House when the impropriety occurred. What is my point. My point is all of this is subjective at best.

Bill Ayers was bad judgment, for sure. But puuhleez, his association with Fannie Mae and the fact that he has their largest contribution. McCain didn't turn his contribution down from Fannie Mae, so this is about how much. Obama got a larger contribution so he is somehow worse than McCain.

Finally, comparing Obama to Bin Laden is very dangerous. Do I call George Bush a racist for attending and associating with Bob Jones University. I don't think so. Unless I see some credible information that can be vetted. I think everybody needs to take a deep breath because the election appears to be getting out of hand with the negativity.

Re: BlogWorldExpo 08: Making Money Online with a Blog

Trisha,
Thank you so much for this post.
