(Not)

Some nut job came to my college in '82 and delivered this kind of message to the mostly right-wing Christian audience. That was, except for me and a group of friends who showed up to listen to the examples of backwards masking because we all thought it was a cool phenomenon.

He played the usual suspects - Stairway To Heaven, Fire On High, Another One Bites The Dust, Revolution 9, but ... what was this? A song by Hall & Oates?? Oh no! Now we have to burn our Hall & Oates records too? SHIT

I knew we were being duped when - to prove his claim that church music was holy - he played a hymn backwards. He took the word "hallelujah" from a hymn, and played it backward, and lo and behold, it STILL sounded like "hallelujah". WOW! Really! Think about it. It's kind of like a palindrome pronunciation.

He brought up the point that a lot of the backward masking examples he presented were hard to understand because these were the works of the devil. Then he played another hymn that when played forward was pretty unintelligible. "But listen to this!" he proclaimed. "When you play THIS SONG OF GOD backward, the message comes out LOUD AND CLEAR" and so he plays the song backward and of course the vocals are crystal clear (because they were really backward on the tape to begin with) and the audience went WILD. Me and my friends kept shouting PLAY IT AGAIN FORWARD so the audience might realize they were being taken down the garden (of Eden) path, but we were ignored.

He told us that John Lennon was the most evil devil worshipper of all. How else could you explain the phenomenal popularity of the Beatles and their substandard, mediocre music (his words - I can still hear them to this day). "Jesus did indeed die" he said, "but Jesus arose. John Lennon is STILL DEAD". Again, the audience erupted in a bunch of hoots and hollers and "praise Jesus"'s and I shouted out "Lennon was a man of peace who was assassinated by a mad man". The lecturer looked in our general direction with a glare that would have vaporized all of us if looks could kill.

At the end of the lecture, the entire audience was invited on stage to engage in something called "fellowship" which looked more like a group grope to me. And tapes of the lecture were available for purchase at only $29.99 for three - THREE - COUNT THEM cassettes. Ah, now I see the light! Praise Jesus!

Re: Mope Like Me: George Michael, “Cowboys and Angels”

<steaming mad> You'd better hope we never meet in a dark alley somewhere, Jefito, 'cause if we did, I'd shoot you with my potato gun. :-)

Re: Mope Like Me: George Michael, “Cowboys and Angels”

Sorry for sidetracking the comments. I did listen to part of the song, but didn't comment on it because I try to only post positively about the music offered here. I did read the entire article and thought it was very well written and made some good points, but I still didn't like the song much.

I'm not a George Michael fan. In fact, I pretty much dislike the guy as a musical artist but it has nothing to do with his personal life. I couldn't care less about his personal life.

I don't like dance music much, so WHAM! did nothing for me. I did like a few songs off of Faith enough to listen to them when they came on the radio but not enough to buy the album. I could only get through about 2 minutes of "C&A" before I turned it off. It may be because it's too slow, or the vocals are too breathy or maybe it's because GM is trying to do a jazzy thing here and I just don't think it works very well. Sorry David!

P.S. I'm not one of those "if you don't like the same music I do, then you have no taste" types either. I believe music is extremely personal and our differences in our musical preferences is nothing to fight over. It's like fighting over whether broccoli tastes good or icky.

Re: Mope Like Me: George Michael, “Cowboys and Angels”

I also live in the midwest. She hated the Beatles (my first musical obsession) because they did "all that screaming". When I discovered Linda Ronstadt later on, Mom liked her too.

I think the only rock song my dad ever admitted liking was Billy Joel's "Only The Good Die Young". It probably reminded him of his horny teenage years at a Catholic high school (my mom's name is Virginia, so do the math).

For the record, I have every Indigo Girls album in my collection.

Re: Cover Me, Game One

24. Dunphy On… Madonna

Excellent post, Mr. D.

I also think Madge will be remembered more for her antics than her music, but I'm not one to judge an artist on image or gimmicks. For me it's the music and only the music.

I don't like Madonna.

Oh, she's had a few choice tracks here and there. I actually enjoy "Like A Prayer" quite a bit, and "Ray of Light" and "Music" are tolerable. But the rest...uh...blah. And I >have< heard most of her stuff because my wife is a BIG BIG BIG fan.

Her early output is so shrill and horribly recorded that it is almost unlistenable. Madonna's voice is not that great on these early tracks, and the up-front mix only accentuates her weakness as a vocalist. As far as the songs themselves, (e.g. "Holiday", "True Blue") they are amateurish, very simplistic and boring.

Yeah, she was a front runner in many pop culture movements, and I guess you could credit her with the empowerment of today's female singers (if you consider that something admirable) but in the end, it's just the music coming out of the speakers that matters most. And I'd rather listen to something else, thanks anyway.

Re: CHART ATTACK!: 7/22/78

Absolutely great chart this week. More love for "Baker Street" here...what a classic track and the album it's from is really terrific. It's a hi-fi sonic masterpiece, so if you're gonna buy a copy (Jason) then find the best sounding one you can find. Your stereo and ears will thank you.

All three Stealer's Wheel albums are pretty good too, as well as Rafferty's debut album "Can I Have My Money Back?" (if somewhat dated). However, Gerry seemed to spend all his quarters on one video game since nothing much after "City To City" was as good. His subsequent albums had a bright spot here and there, but nothing like the complete brilliance that is "C2C".

Dang, you know you have a strong chart when the worst song is by the Stones.

Re: Lost In The ’70s: ABBA, “Hey Hey Helen”

My favorite ABBA album track is "King Kong Song" from the Waterloo album. The program director refused to play anything from either of them, and so I swiped them. He claimed they both were "too depressing". I had a free-for-all music show late Sunday nights, and I played "Opposite View". The next day the program director asked me about the song and wanted the CD back. Not to play on the air, but to keep for himself. Yeah, ok, I'll bring it in. It's still in my collection!!!

All of their albums have something of merit (except the first one which I loathe).
