I don't doubt there is potential for Foursquare, because I think
they've cracked a valuable mobile segment. I'm just not sure whether the
masses can wrap their heads around it right now. "I'm here or I'm doing"
was the question twitter tried to answer, but it isn't what made it
successful - it's an animal far different than its intent. Foursquare needs
to uncover that mystery angle.

One other thing that Facebook has that Foursquare is going to have a hard
time tapping into - your past. Although Facebook lets me see what's new
with my past and present friends, foursquare's relevance is really limited
to your current friends (and probably a subset at best). It's the
difference between fishing with a rod and fishing with a net.

Re: A Couple Foursquare Anecdotes

I'm mixed. I like the overall idea, but it is failing in exactly the spot that twitter excels - "real friends" versus "web friends." On twitter, I can easily follow and enjoy anyone that has some similar interest - like tech. On four square, you really need to be friends with the person to have a "real" interest. I would love for more of my "real" friends to be on four square, but even twitter is a rarity. The problem with four square is it is not individual - I can't benefit from it as much without others (read: my real world friends) joining. Twitter is more easily digested by the individual, and it doesn't rely on a high correlation between real friends and web friends.

That said, I could see the teen segment growing easier.

Re: Subs: News Corp. They WANT their device untethered from carrier restrictions, but were smart enough to recognize the need for carrier buy-in to get the device to market. Ultimately, I can see Apple turning the mobile industry on its ear like it did the music industry. I don't think it is only legacy technology that dies hard, but also legacy business models. Like the iPhone or not, Apple has been one of the few companies that has been able to force the hand of entrenchment.

Re: jQuery Visualize Plugin: Accessible Charts & Graphs from Table Elements using HTML 5 Canvas - NICCAI

My contact details are here:
http://niccai.com/

Re: Does Anyone Use Chrome?

Never really clued into FF having that - guess cause they still have the
search box.

Re: Does Anyone Use Chrome?

Completely. FF is used for development. On my Mac, I tend to still surf using Safari. The one thing I absolutely love about Chrome is the all in one search/address bar. Drives me nuts in other browsers when I don't have this. You can get early access to the official Chromium for Mac here:

http://dev.chromium.org/getting-involved/dev-ch...

Re: The Death of the Gatekeeper

Agreed. I'd be leery of putting too much emphasis on Boxee. I think Boxee is a superb solution, and I think support for it is key to support the geekery. However, you need something much more tangible for the mainstream. Ultimately, I think you need to think less about using your app on other devices, and more about how you can get the data stream malleable enough to be consumed on other devices. I think you need to focus as much on the api around this as you do on the app itself. We have already become journalists and broadcasters, and the next likely step is to become the networks of tomorrow. AVC could easily be as noteworthy as NBC.

Re: The "Watch Later" Project

Yeah, I think sharing is a key part of this equation (I've been batting this idea around too for a long time). I like the idea of being able to watch other channels besides your own. I also think you need tagging support, so you can browse for videos saved by others. Also, trending videos and things like most mentioned on twitter. If you could do across your "friends" list, it would be even more powerful. It needs to be 100% streaming also, otherwise I think you enter a litigation quagmire.

Re: Facebook and Twitter coming to Xbox Live as Microsoft beefs up other entertainment on Xbox 360

What about letting some of the information flow out of Xbox....as opposed to in.

Re: Cloud Based Messaging

Or just use Fluid.

http://fluidapp.com/

Re: Email Fail

You might be interested in this article then:

Achieving Email Bliss with IMAP, Gmail, and Apple Mail

Re: The Power Of Passed Links

Are you missing value by not considering other trusted sources as passed links? What about your blog? Most links I "follow" come from trusted sources via twitter, email, rss, or the respective site associated with my trusted source. Also, how do you validate the passed links from Twitter? Do you consider all url shortening services and assume it is twitter? Just wondering how you factor in the myriad of clients and sites using their api.

Re: What We Can Learn From MacHeist

Finally, someone that gets it. I bought the bundle for the first time this time around, because there were a couple of apps I was looking at. Would I have bought them otherwise? Maybe. Hard to know. But for the others, they have my interest and they now are installed on my machine. These "other apps" and even some of the bigger ones have an incredible inroads to gaining word of mouth reconginition. At the very least, they gain familiarity for a time when a problem arises and a solution is needed. MacHeist may devalue the true value of an app, but they provide an incredible service - marketing done at its best. It's not often you get the chance at a guaranteed return on investment - in this case, on your advertising dollar.
