First, I am not a "thin skinned liberal". Mr. Keefer has no legal right to talk publicly about grades and eligibility situations. I am not saying that Ferguson is a good student or person. As an educator Mr. Keefer cannot make public statements like these. Druid, how would you respond if this was your son? The entire story is not known. Probably will never be known.

Ya know, my dad, a pediatrician and my mom, a dedicated homemaker and supervisor of all things homey as well as those related to the home office of my dad, the country doctor. They didn't swear at all. My most memorable quote of my mom to and about my dad was: upon one busy spring day.... 'Robbins, I married you for better or worse, but not for lunch.' Dad's favorite was an all american baseball reference: ' Don't you get the pitch?'

I always liked your dad's direct approach: witnessing one little tiff in the Gregg household, I noticed he projected his middle finger quite profoundly at your mom.

My grand uncle, Harry, my grandmother's brother, was a wind engineer, and in his latter years modified an Edgartown 18 to his specs. The sails, mast and rigging were all moveable and he ordered them to be adjusted just about every minute you were sailing with him. If you weren't in the right place pulling the right line at the right time, he belllowed: 'make the god damn thing fast' and that also meant 'in a hurry'.
'Get your lazy ass to starboard (or port, or aft or forward)' to anticipate the wave action. 'Hike your fat ass out'.

Needless to say, the ladies did not sail with Harry as often as you might think some tight assed bitches would find his company arousing. He had won the Edgartown cup 2 years in a row, and upon winning the third year, those cheap-ass NewEnglanders would let you keep the plated metal momento. Harry got a heart attack in one of the last races of his 3rd winning year, and the bastards kept the cup.

Harry's boat is called the Whisper and as late as 2002, the boat now owned by an island minister, was winning races on Martha's Vineyard.... no shit.

My father, if you recall, was one of the cussers of all time. He never cussed anyone in particular but if I felt that it was directed at me, well I ran. As a college professor, it is assumed that your vocabulary is sufficient so that you don't swear. Not true, damn, hell and every once in awhile the f-bomb was used in class. Mostly for affect and it worked.

Tesla also understood air foils. I believe he was the first to understand and establish that at high velocties the air does not make contact with the wing.
A friend of mine took this theory and invented a centrifugal pump that can pump live fish and they are still alive after discharge from the pump. This just an example but the theory worked.

The list was interesting, great idea! Think how many great players did not make the top 10. Perhaps only UCLA, Kentucky , Duke and Kansas would have such an impressive list.

Scott May was a great player for IU. If not for a broken arm, IU would have probably won two championships and been undefeated for two years, in a row.
It is impossible for everyone to agree on topics like this. I can't get my family to agree on where we go for dinner!
May is deserving of this ranking, could he have been #1, sure. Several others could have received strong consideration for the #1 ranking.
Bobby Wilkerson should not be on the list, but he was a pioneer of the rangy guard. If May and Wilkerson had been early predictors, who knows. They couldn't play as freshmen, so they only had three years.
Whatever, all 10 players are deserving. Where they belong can be argued way into the night.

I agree with your assessment on Chaeny.
May played with guys who had fairly long and successful NBA careers like Buckner, Wilkerson, Benson.
Zeke played with players other than Woodson his freshman year who were so so NBA players with short careers who were benefactors of the General's system. In my opinion Zeke made those guys better.

Zeke, as he is known, was a great competitor. IU was 26-9 that year. I think that is still the most losses by a champion.
Probably the best guard in IU history, everyone is entitiled to their opinion.
There was great support around Zeke; Turner, Thomas, Tolbert, Kitchel. and others.
Scott May, obviously had great support around him.
Cheaney did not quite have that support, in my opinon.

This was an interesting time in the Big Ten. OSU had Lucas, Havlicek and Knight. Purdue had Terry Dischinger. Iowa had Don Nelson. I am sure there were others. Bellamy more than held his own against some of the greats. Only one team went to the NCAA. Unfortunately for OSU there was a school in Cincinnati that ruined their chances for three in a row. Bellamy deserves his place on this list.

They called him "Big Bear". At 6'4" he probably was considered a big bear. I saw him every once in a while around campus and he was a good sized man.
I would think that it really bothered him what happened under the Lou Watson/Jerry Oliver tenure. Sounds like a familiar theme, doesn't it? How many coaches has UCLA gone through? NC went through two before landing Williams. Duke will be interesting. IU is not the first, nor will it be the last to suffer

FYI

McCracken and Wooden were neighbors in Martinsville and played together as boys. Now that you mention it perhaps McCracken deserves a mention in the top 10 .

Can we have have 11 in the top 10.........?........after all, we are not the engineering school in Indiana where they are forced to accept the number 10 as is. We are the creative math people.

The interesting point to me, was that he was inducted as a player, not as a coach. Wooden was inducted twice, as a player and as a coach. The only IU players in the hall are McCracken, Bellamy and Thomas.

DJW who is on this site frequently has reccommended a book about McCracken and his 1953 NCAA champs written by an IU alum. I am sure he will would be happy to give us all the title again when he gets back on ITH

Let me apolgize for yesterday. What was intended as a compliment turned bad, I am truly sorry.
Today I looked up the Hall of fame. Guess who's on there as a player? Branch McCracken. I am not suggesting he's a top ten, just found it interesting.
Alford was the epitome of IU basketball. The final four choices will be interesting to view.
