Let's not forget that Bush beat Kerry by 3 million votes in 2004, but a swing of just 60,000 votes in Ohio would have given Kerry the election. It would have been an absolute travesty of democracy had Kerry won despite losing the popular vote by such a substantial margin. Hell, Bush would have had a clear majority of the vote, the first since 1988, and yet lost.

McCain is already ceding every blue state from 2004 and Iowa -- that is spotting Obama 259 electoral votes. He needs to focus on the remaining states if he wants any chance of winning.

Re: Senate Watch -- Political Wire

I don't want to see Lieberman punished because I think that he wants to be a pariah. (Though maybe a rule that you have to be part of the caucus to be a committee chair -- sorry to Bernard Sanders, then again we can lift that rule whenever he's in position to be a chair of a full committee. If we took away his chair, what would he do? If he quits the party himself he's finishing his career in the minority and won't win in Connecticut.)

I actually think we're ignoring a third option -- he's going to resign his seat after the election and pursue other ventures, like Lott did once he realized that he was going to be in the minority forever. That way he gets sort of what he wants -- one final sticking to the Democrats in the form of Sen. Chris Shays appointed by Jodi Rell, and he gets to go make money as a consultant for either the insurance industry or the Israel lobby.

In fact, I'm going to bank on it now -- Lieberman will resign if McCain loses (because you know he's taking DoD if McCain wins). He'll quit, it will cost the Democrats a seat and he'll get to prove his point that he has no master but himself.

Re: Senate Watch -- Political Wire

Can we please stop all of this nonsense about "reaching 60" seats?

Look, I'd love a Democratic majority of sixty, but hitting sixty, with or without Joe Lieberman in the caucus, isn't going to mean that there won't be any more filibusters. There are so many moderates in the senate in both parties (Lieberman, Ben Nelson, Evan Bayh, Mark Pryor, Mary Landrieu -- Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, Arlen Specter, George Voinovich, Dick Lugar) that even if Democrats have 60 or 61, it won't be any more valuable to have obtained the magic number.

On votes about the war, Democrats will need those moderate Republicans to make up for their own defections. Same is true about votes on economic issues (see Max Baucus) and on votes on social issues. Having sixty might create the appearance of a body that can get everything it wants done, but that will be far from the case -- especially if McConnell is the minority leader -- he's too skilled a parliamentarian.

What sixty really means is that Democrats will have the Senate for the next few years to come. Having a big majority and a mandate to govern is what really matters.

Also -- enough about punishing Lieberman -- don't. His vote will be important if we have 59, 60 or 61 Senators as on some issues, he has been a reliable supporter. He's wrong on the war and was a jerk all year -- that's fine. He's the one who has to survive Connecticut voters in 2012.

Re: Quote of the Day -- Political Wire

"A George divided against itself, cannot stand!" -- Seinfeld.

Re: SurveyUSA: Obama Opens Lead in Virginia -- Political Wire

I hope it is true. Still, when looking at the other polls all it really does is confirm two things:

(1) Virginia is a toss-up.

(2) Virginia is a better path to 270 for Obama than Ohio.

McCain must be freaking out. If Iowa and Virginia both get away from him, he will NEED to steal MI or NH from Obama.

Re: National Journal Poll: Key Red States May Flip -- Political Wire

They didn't even poll another Bush state that we'll win: Iowa.

And IA, CO and NM would be enough.

Re: National Journal Poll: Key Red States May Flip -- Political Wire

These polls aren't very good -- any poll more than a week old is useless.

Any poll with a 5 percent margin of error is just lazy.

Which polling firm is behind these?

And as SGA pointed out: This is before the new "IT" story -- the economic problems on Wall St. and the debacle of McCain saying "the fundamentals are strong." We've seen all the daily tracks move considerably toward Obama since then. Any poll taken before that isn't worth reporting.

Re: DNC Member Now Backs McCain -- Political Wire

I can't stand the black/white, right/wrong, good/evil crap. It's exciting, we will finally know the answer of whether the American people will elect an all-out liar to the presidency who relishes in being a hypocrite and completely inconsistent.

If McCain wins, the gloves won't just be off in 2012... the brass knuckles will be on.

Re: Connecticut Delegates Want Lieberman Punished -- Political Wire

No, they wouldn't.

I am not in favor of kicking Lieberman out (because it is short-sighted for other reasons), but the Organizing Resolution for the current Senate clearly states that if the membership were to go to 50-50 the current resolution would still control and Reid would remain majority leader, and Democrats would keep their chairmanships. This has been extensively written about on other blogs, including over at TNR.

That's why the Senate GOP has made no efforts at getting Lieberman to quit. Your analysis is that of a first timer, it's easy to see.

Anyone who thinks Hillary can still take this hasn't followed politics for more than a couple months. McCain isn't the strongest GOP candidate? That just shows how many cards are missing from your deck.

The popular vote-electoral vote split has happened once (maybe -- we still don't know who won Florida) in modern times.
