Colbert said CBS had renewed the show for a third season, but un-renewed it when Taylor said she didn’t want to continue as host. There was no ship to jump from until CBS decided they didn’t want to go through the process of looking for a new host.

#8 Did you know this was McCartney's last Top 10 hit in the U.S. until a couple of years ago, when he was given co-credit as a performer on "FourFIveSeconds"? At least now, if the Rhianna/Kanye song is McCartney's last Top 10 for all time, he went out on a much higher note than with "Spies Like Us".

They kept the movie's stars as background singers in the Euro version, because specifically the ban is on non-instrument players pretending to play, but not on non-singers pretending to sing.

My wife and I have had our Border Terrier for seven years. Such a wonderful dog.
Because of the specific area where BTs come from, we named him Hadrian, and he does act like a little emperor sometimes.

It was only this week that I found out that part of the history of "Last Christmas" is that George Michael was sued by the publishers or Barry Manilow's hit "Can't Smile Without You" because the tunes were similar (the parties settled out of court, but Michael was officially cleared of "charges" in 2010).

Okay, this one was so bad, and so poorly written, that I literally had to take notes to remember all the lapses in logic in this song. Here we go:

(1) The clothes are on their backs were "all they ever owned". What? You just said the bank took their house! Even if you want to split hairs and say the bank were the house's owners until the mortgage was paid off, they certainly didn't own nothing else--there had to have been some stuff in the house! But he says "all they EVER owned", not "all that they still owned". WTF?

(2) The lyric "He hopes like Baby Jesus/ That somewhere there's a star/ To guide Santa..." Wait, what? I had to go back and re-listen to that, it was so convoluted. Regardless of the songwriter's intentions, the wording could be taken to mean (a) the boy hopes that, like baby Jesus IS (or brings) a star, a star will bring Santa to find him; (b) the boy hopes, like baby Jesus hoped, that there's a star to guide someone (three Kings/Santa) to him; or (c) Baby Jesus literally was hoping that there was a star to being Santa Claus to him!

(3) And speaking of he/him, the writer doesn't give either of the main characters names. Yes, he probably wanted to make them anonymous for the purposes of making it universal in tone and having you think about all the homeless, blah, blah, blah. But he keeps switching between the father and son and calls them both "He", so you can hardly tell at times who's saying what.

(4) The father tells his son to make a wish list for Christmas, and then spends the money he got from pawning his watch on....a hotel room and a tree? What was the point of telling the kid to make the list when his "present" ended up being a night in a hotel? And we know that's not what the kid wanted, because he writes ANOTHER note to Santa saying he just wants his dad's watch back.

(5) They're homeless. They're obviously hungry. And yet the dad bought milk and cookies to leave for Santa? Dad: the room is a nice idea. But save on the tree and the traditional nosh for Santa and FEED YOUR DAMN KID!

ARRGH!!!

Correct. It is dirty or wet/sweaty hands that you have to eliminate, not the presence of bare hands themselves. The guide the National Archive has on the appropriate handing of documents and other paper materials states that clean, dry hands are perfectly acceptable: http://1.usa.gov/1laraOK

It's just that most people don't pre-prep their hands to that condition, which is why gloves have become an assumed standard for looking at rare books.

Animated films ARE eligible for Best Picture. They're just usually overlooked because most voters think animation = kids film and kids film = not serious enough for the Academy. That attitude is a good reason which the Academy created the Best Animated Feature Oscar in 2001--to at least throw animation a bone. Yet, since the Award was created, both Up (2009) and Toy Story 3 (2010) have been nominated for Best Picture, not just Best Animated Feature.

Dave, I love your deconstruction and criticism of Lefsetz because it exposes how oblivious he is to his own hypocrisy. In this case, he totally zooms over the fact that as music writers go, he is probably one of the biggest haters of them all. I don't even thing he likes music, with the exception of some country and country/mellow rock dudes because they give him free tickets and he admires how much tail they pull.

But, really, go through a cycle of his columns and you'll usually find the same things over and over again:

**A band who just signed to a major label: I haven't heard of you. You're going to bomb. You obviously didn't grow your fan base organically.

**A band who's trying to grow their fans organically: Where's the record? Why should I listen to you if you're not pushing units? Get off my lawn.

**A band with a decent amount of sales: You can't sustain your career with this model. If you're not pushing the # of units I say you should, you're only proof that the record industry is failing, man!

**A band with lots of sales: You've got to change up your sound. You're the flavor of the month and going to fall off unless you grow with the times. Get ready for total irrelevancy in a year or two!

**A band that changes with the times: You think anyone wants to listen to your new stuff? That's not what got you those fans. Great job alienating them. Just shut up and play the hits.

**Classic bands who have stood the test of time: Why do you even try? Your time has come and gone, and you don't even realize that. Just stop now....except for Jackson Browne: He still makes me moist.

Well, since it's here, I guess this is the best time to break out my Kool and the Gang story again.....

In the mid-90s my best friend's girlfriend was spending a semester abroad in Indonesia. She and the other girls in the exchange program went out one night and ended up in the bar of this hotel. And in the bar....Kool & the Gang. And every member proceeded to successfully hit on all the girls there with the exception of my friend's girlfriend (at least, that's how she told it). One of the members (don't know if it was Kool or not), actually used the line "You know, you look like a natural kind of woman....I've got some brown rice and tahini up in my room".

Anyway, considering the results of that night, we refer to that Indonesian encounter as "Kool & the Gangbang"

One of the most famous legends in rock history is that when Captain Beefheart was laying down the vocals to the tracks from "Trout Mask Replica", he refused to listen to it through earphones in order to keep time with the lyrics, so not only is the music itself all over the place, but often his vocals don't match up quite right with how they "should" be placed against the music.

Listening to this, I get the same feeling, only instead of a studio, Shanelf is locked in his bathroom, trying to lay down the vocals before his wife knocks on the door and orders him to take out the garbage. And instead of Frank Zappa behind the boards, Shanelf has a 1989 model Sony boombox losing battery power, and belching out the programming he did earlier that day on his son's Casio keyboard.
