Dear candidates who go around saying you won't raise income taxes, take a look around. That's pretty much how we got where we are today. The people aren't going to buy it just because you say it. We're way past that.

I suppose between campaigning, the budget, reforms, fumigating, and the veto session, now's not the best time to bring up the 2500+ clemency requests still sitting on Pat Quinn's desk. "Shameful."

Rich, I think one of the reasons you have such a great community here is that, besides just banning the horrendous, you actually get in here and interact with them in the comments. It makes for intelligent conversation and exchange of ideas.

As an avid reader of blogs, and especially blogs about politics, I've developed an appreciation for the rare political candidate who does allow comments. It gets even better when the candidate replies to the comments. What I don't like is when a blog post piles up with inane and useless comments. To me, it looks like the pol (or in his absence, his web person) thought he could just throw something on the blog and walk away. This looks bad and doesn't bear well on the pol and how he thinks about his constituents and their issues.

Marie, I linked the cached version in the last update. They did indeed
pull it. The McCain moment you're thinking of was the town hall he
held before the election where the woman said she was 'afraid of Obama
because he was a Muslim'. McCain told her he wasn't, but it was not
nearly forceful enough.

Karoli, I basically agree with the others that the cases your bring up are protected speech. However, I am very glad you blogged about this in your usual articulate way. I hope you continue to blog about this.

What I would like to hear, and what a lot of people need to hear, is the cadre of conservative candidates running in the not-too-distant-future primaries, take the podium and forcefully and emphatically denounce that kind of speech and set straight the people who make it and their followers. Instead of SILENTLY counting those followers among their own.

On a side note: John McCain did a little of that in one of his pre-election town halls, but the signal was obviously much too weak to get through. (I can't recall the exact wording he was trying to refute, but whatever it was, was equally detestable.)

Dave, Thank you for making something that even a not- very-technologically-advanced person like me would find useful. Unfortunately, the thing I want to use it for does not seem possible. Or, at least, not readily apparent. Do you know where in the Friendfeed interface I would upload my OPML file to create a separate list or group?

This is a great tip, Karoli, and a use for GReader I had not thought of.

Also, subscribing to your own blog's full feed in GReader can be used as a blog backup. Same for your own Flickr stream. Although you wouldn't get the full size photos.
