He may not have a criminal record, but that's not what I said. The acts alleged were and are undoubtedly criminal acts, and he committed them. I'll even set aside the strangulation, if you like. The remainder of what he did was criminal in nature.

As I said, this is risk management, so in order to consider this possibility at all, I would want to know what Beard has completed since that time to address this behavior and ensure it never happens again, including a substantial domestic violence treatment program. Even then, seems to me he would rank as a third tier option that you'd only have the stomach to try if your first 5-7 phone calls miss. There are other coaches with similar records that present less risk. They should get that call first.

Some folks are desperate enough to take the risk just hoping it works out. Okay, I guess. Some of those folks will turn around and blame the administration if it goes wrong. It's arguably more prudent to just avoid hiring someone whose downside risk would drag the program even further down than it is now.

Separately, I don't really find his coaching track record to warrant the lofty heights in which he is regarded either. He is an above average coach, but by no means a top 10 coach who would be a no brainer.

It's one thing to hire someone who has violated NCAA rules. Quite another to hire someone who has committed criminal acts.

You can call it clutching pearls, I guess, if you're dying to be pejorative. I prefer to call it risk management. I would not like to hire a coach who might be hauled off in handcuffs next year.

Throw me in at 19-12, I guess. A lot up in the air for this group. I believe in our scoring ability this year, though, as compared to last year where occasionally we were desperate for someone to make a play.

A. Only applies as against the government - you're posting here at Alex et al.'s pleasure. B. That isn't a reason or purpose to say *anything*, merely a justification for why it might be permitted.

I'm done with this, I guess, but Big Ten championships don't grow on trees. Everyone should enjoy these moments. If this is how you handle your team winning one, I'd hate to see how you dealt with the last 3-4 years.

This exactly. This is typical freshman stuff. Have we gotten so used to Cody Zeller and Yogi showing unusual poise that we've forgotten that youth leads to these sorts of mistakes? He'll grow as the year goes on.

Calling it like I see it. I'd like nothing better than to watch IU run the table... but I think this team might have a little trouble in conference with the weight of its expectations and the bullseye on its back.

Wisconsin always seems to get a bit of bump from the officials (I think they get credit from refs for playing better defense than sometimes is actually the case). Makes the game that much tougher.

And for what it's worth, I agree with those who say there are problems with recruiting young and oversigning. I just believe at this point it's necessary in order to run a top 5 program.

It's fine reasoning for us, sitting here talking about it rationally. These are teenagers. Have you seen them tweet every time they get an offer? It means something to them, and thus, it means something to them when they don't get an offer. In other circles, we might term that sort of attention without the followthrough of an offer "relationship ambivalence".

I'm with CTC on this one. It may not be desirable to oversign or to sign them when they're freshmen, but it's what's required to stay ahead of the pack and to be in on the recruits we need to be in on.

Except that then the kid gives up on you when you don't offer until junior/senior year because he doesn't think you're interested or you didn't "give him enough love". It's a relationship game now. It used to be just selling the program.

No other school is going to wait. If you're going to be an elite program, you have to recruit like one. Crean has shown and continues to show he is relentless in that area.

He's doing exactly what other high level coaches do. Always have a Plan B. And C, and D, and E. I don't feel the need to "be in the loop". The fact that talented players continue to bring IU up means CTC is doing what he should be doing.

I dunno... the NBA is awfully big on potential. I'm not saying I disagree the kid needs to improve, but there probably isn't a shortage of GMs willing to take a shot on a kid with the athleticism of Hanner.

Again, I think this is pretty ridiculous. This was a game we easily win if a JC transfer doesn't have the game of his life. Sometimes the other team is hotter than you. Doesn't mean anyone was "outcoached".

I somewhat disagree with the idea that Crean was "outcoached". Sorry, but a JC transfer that barely plays scored all these points. That's not "outcoaching" anyone... that's just a kid having the game of his life. Sometimes you lose to that. There's no shame in it. Yes, the 3 pt defense should probably be better, but if you asked Crean before the game, I bet he'd be content with the idea of Rob Wilson taking that many 3s.

Officiating in the tournament, unfortunately, is not even close to the reliable thing your comment seems to indicate. Pray that IU doesn't end up with PAC 12 refs.

Sure, a lot of pressure next year... if by pressure you mean expectations to win a lot of games. That's what Hoosier Nation will expect with the touted Movement coming in. There won't be much tolerance for growing pains, I would expect. That said, criticism of Tom Crean after the year this team has had is ludicrous. He's still my National Coach of the Year.
