I host the "Orphans', Refugee's, and Procrastinators' Thanksgiving" each year and invited them last year. They were thrilled, having never experienced a true American Thanksgiving. We also held an Indian Potluck using recipes from Raghavan Iyer's 660 Curries and one other book. Six friendly neighbors sitting around a banquet of Indian cuisine...none of us having made these dishes before, none of us being Indian. So there are many ways to explore cultures through food, it's never better than when you have good friends around the table.

Have you read Laura Schenone's Lost Ravioli of Hoboken? People concerned about the environment should know that food waste accounts for more greenhouse gas emissions than many, many other things they worry about. I wanted to let all your readers know that I've added a regular Tuesday feature non-wimpy S/O/L/E Food Tuesday to my blog. This was to answer readers' quest for more sustainable, eco-friendly, healthy, meat-free options to add to their diet. I cover recipes, but also some of the thinking and the resources that support a more diversified menu. Hope you'll stop by!

Jacqueline Church

Oh, and if you want to serve a great wine with your vegetarian meal, check this out:http://carrieanddanielle.com/biodynamic-wines-with-holiday-meals-balance-for-your-palate-and-planet/

Re: Sweet Reads are Made of These: Books for the Smart and Successful Woman

It's a timely read. And congratulations. I find it hilarious when hot new startups ridicule "female" content. When I started food writing and exploring the then new world of social networking, I discovered Digg. I kept looking for any articles on food, cooking, wine etc. Even geeks must eat, I told them. I asked more than once why they wouldn't add a food and wine or food and cooking category.

The boys' reply? A swift and blunt reply it was: "OUR readers would consider such articles spam."

How embarrassing for them. One more example of youth being wasted on the young. (And an aside to the men who keep funding short-sited and arrogant young boys running startups w/o diversity of life experience or staff...ask yourself if you're only funding guys who remind you of yourself. Then, if you don't know why a "yes" is problematic, brush up your resume.)

Well, I guess we could say all's well that ends well. Digg has added a category for food and cooking. See men and women cannot live on RedBull alone.

Cheers!

Re: From Vacuum Attachments to Gold plated Pleasure Objects: My Top Vibrator Picks

I used to work with a woman who named her vibrator "Hank". You are correct that salmon farming is one of the most environmentally hazardous. From 3 to 9 lbs of fish are used to produce one lb of farmed salmon. That alone makes it inherently un-sustainable. The waste concentration and the sea lice are other complications. I have an entire list of resources, links to organizations in Canada, US, abroad, books, and more (including a great short video for kids) on my resource page.

Cheers,
Jacqueline

Re: Everything You Wanted to Know About Becoming a Vegetarian (But Were Afraid to Ask)

Devorah! I just stumbled upon this post and this periodical. In response to readers' requests, I've begun a Meat-free Tuesday feature on my blog and I'll be sure to post a link to this. Between the low carbon eating, concerns about GMO and antibiotic loaded foods, as well as the ethical issues many are looking for more meat-free ways to enjoy good food. Come check my Tuesday column, too.

Cheers,
Jacqueline

Re: Only Two Percent of Bloggers Can Make a Living - mediabistro.com: GalleyCat

I think ad revenue potential is vastly over estimated by, surprise, those whose business is vested in selling traffic. Been blogging for two years and have seen lots of changes, most for the better. One thing remains constant, the refrain that "content is king" uttered by someone who is making profits selling their traffic with your content; usually uttered at the same time they say "we can't pay you but just think of the great exposure." The ones making money seem to be doing so by exploiting those willing to give their work away.

On the other hand, many small businesses are not prepared to take advantage of the opportunities focused sponsorship would offer them. For example, I find a product I might give up precious real estate on my blog for. I reach out. They love the idea, but they don't know the first thing about widgets or code or how to do what they know in concept they ought to be doing. "I'm a small business and don't really know how to do this kind of thing."

Larger businesses who get it, don't want to allow bloggers any control over what goes on their blogs. (Asian dating services? Oprah's latest diet? Puh-lease.)

I refuse to host soulja-dancing re-fi ads, diet ads, or Kraft Singles ads on my blog and Adsense never rose to a full dollar of revenue after one year.

Syndication is another concept that seems to be growing but it appears that most of those doing it, still struggle to find a business model that works. They are reaching out to established savvy bloggers providing quality content, but still very uneven in the "benefits" they can offer to the bloggers providing the content they're selling. "just think of the clicks you'll get!"

If advertisers could figure out how to eliminate middlemen like all these - and find bloggers like me, we would all be happy. At present it seems hard to find each other in the wilderness of the blogosphere. Just call me Moses...

~ Jacqueline Church
The Leather District Gourmet
