Of course, he has already been in office nearly 8 years now. You should have been paying attention when he voted for the shady wetlands swap. Or when he abandoned his commitment to maintain 2 police officers per 1000 residents(already lower than both LA and Signal Hill). Do you also think that pushing to demolish a historic and cultural landmark is a great service to the community?

Yes, one just opened in the last few weeks at 3120 Los Coyotes Diagonal. Look it up on Weedmaps.com (motto: Find Your Bud)--it's called the 55 Caps Collective. I read some of the reviews, and didn't see much evaluation from a pain management or medical point of view. Quote from one of two reviews on the website: "Its super dense, frosted out, fresh, and it has this killer citrus scent to it that kicks ass! As soon as I smelled it I was sold! So, I got a 4 gram 1/8 for 55, a joint, two edibles, AND SOME HASH! Like I said, this is my new spot! KEEP IT UP GUYS!"

I used to stop in at that neighboring liquor store for a jolly rancher every afternoon on my way home from Marshall Jr. High.

I don't object to the collectives, but I do object to the lack of regulation (business license, inspection,) the attractive nuisance liabilities. Why should it be more difficult to open a check cashing storefront, restaurant, even host a neighborhood event, than open a storefront that sells drugs, ie medication.

The reason so many people are calling Gerrie in opposition is because a few have opened in her district. Her district is primarily made up of families in suburban neighborhoods. They don't like it.

haha! I just came here after reading the District's story about Gerrie Shipske, where I left the commment...are there even any dispensaries in her district!

To the toad, who raises a question I hadn't considered: are you saying that the city sees collectives and dispensaries differently? That it is just collectives they are regulating more strictly?

The concern appears to be the dispensing of food products that have not been inspected by anyone with medical competence. I don't know if this concern is a particularly valid one or not but I'm hoping that the Council is also soliciting the professional medical advice of City Health Officer Dr. Calvet and others at our Department of Health and Human Services as they proceed in their deliberations.

There is no good reason what so ever for the city to take names and pictures. The doctors already do this when you get your prescription. One big reason is that a patient may only use their prescription a short time and then never again. Why should their name make it to any kind of list, especially a public one?

Placing a limitation on edibles shows a lack of understanding about the use of marijuana as medicine. Doctors actually recommend to patients not to smoke as it increases other health risks. Patients are encouraged to use edibles and lotions (for arthritis) rather than always relying on inhalation. Also some patients are unable to or deeply opposed to smoking.

Really, beyond an an appropriate business license, no additional regulations are required for dispensaries. City of LB needs to respect patient privacy rights.

Tony, have you ever watched a loved one slowly die of the horrible side effects of chemotherapy? Because I have. Sometimes, it's not the cancer that kills, but the fact that the treatment makes the patient nauseous and unable to eat for weeks at a time. Have you ever watched a robust person drop nearly all their body weight over six months because they couldn't eat a bite? Held their hand for more than a year through awful treatments, only to watch them die anyway?

Have you ever experienced the joy of watching that loved one dive into one of their last meals with gusto--all because of a bong hit? Because I have.

We are talking about using marijuana as medicine here.

Jesus taught compassion. Think about it. There is nothing delinquent or dangerous about a person using marijuana to relieve medical conditions--small and large.

Calling marijuana evil is plain old dumb.

I think you may be missing my point. I get my calls answered when I call 911. Due to various unfortunate events in my life recently I have called 911 from my cell phone three times in the last month. I have been answered, put directly through to LB dispatch, and had good response time from all LB services every time.

(Just so you know one of those calls was for a downed homeless guy, and the paramedics were there in moments. It was taken very seriously.)

Los Altos is just a hop skip and jump from the East LBPD station---easier to
get to then is Belmont Shore.

It depends also on how many other calls they are and what they are for.

I think you may be missing the point of this article. It is not about how fast or how many cops respond to the scene of the crime. This article is about how long it takes for the police to pick up the phone when you call for their assistance. Unless the cops have perfected mind reading, I suspect it would be difficult for 7 cars, 12 officers, and a k-9 unit to show up at the scene of the crime if your call couldn't get through to give them an address.

It must depend upon what part of town you live in. In Los Altos, if you call 911, you will get 7 cars, 12 officers, and a k-9 unit in less than 5 minutes. Overkill?
Yes. But I like it.

Maybe the cops just like to take the more safe and predictible calls, rather than dealing with drunk asses on 2nd.

Do the City's no smoking laws apply to "medicinal" pot? Can you legally smoke pot on the beach or at the park or at city hall? Could explain much about what's happening on the 14th floor. Just asking...

As with any drug epecially one that is smoked there are serious side affects and second hand smoke issues.
