I also know people who will overspend on one child and then feel they need to "even up" with the other child and so the total cost (and amount of gifts) gets higher and higher. It's crazy.

Thanks, Maz. That's one thing I've found with many of the midwives (and heard the same from talking to a lot of other mothers) - while they're wonderful, it's just a job to them and they seem to have lost all appreciation of how scary and alienating it is to go through it for the first time.

Thanks, Daniel. Yep, there was one particular - hugely popular - book that I used to read in bed and then worry that Harry wasn't reaching his "milestones". You don't need that kind of pressure, really!

I love that one too, DLR (and all Lamott's books). In fact I had it on the list originally and I pretty much wrote the same as you: "It saved my life because it helped me realize that what I was feeling didn't mean I was crazy." :)

Also Madeleine's World: a Biography of a Three Year Old by Brian Hall is wonderful and fascinating.

Hey, Helen! My 4-year-old son's birth was traumatic and I didn't think I'd have another child, but here I am with six weeks to go! Good luck with the birth and good luck with the dream job!
