In fact, you came
right to the point in a straightforward, direct manner. Thanks for sharing
the link!

I'm as white-hot angry as I've ever been, particularly since tonight's
debate is in Nashville, land of intolerance. Really horrible to see him just pass it on by without even stopping to set things straight. This is how craven the man is, how hungry he is for power. Amazingly, if one
actually reads the quotes you left in context like an adult, you discover
that they are neither unpatriotic, unamerican or particularly shocking. And
at least he tells the truth, which is something your candidate does not and
cannot do. so save the trolling for someone who cares.

Re: Why Evangelical Christians Should Vote for Obama

It is my fondest hope that evangelical Christians will consider the mehtod of advancing christian principles as one to exist in the world instead of washington. When they're as ready to take care of the poor, needy and sick in their own communities, they will be upholding true christian principles. The flailing at government is nothing more than legalistic demagoguery.

Re: Fading Reflections of Summer Afternoons

Thank you, it's one of my favorite subjects. They should have been phased in over time instead of having to appear suddenly on balance sheets all at once. Pension plans went through the pain of mark-to-market accounting 20 years ago, and it was hugely painful. Now we're seeing that effect magnified sixty times. Mark to market is the correct method, but a phase-in would have allowed less shock to the markets.

Re: Dodd Refines Bailout Rules

the real problem, though, is the derivatives. once the underlying assets go, the value of the derived assets goes, too. It's a big pyramid scheme that never should have been allowed to happen. I'm very uncomfortable with the idea of JP Morgan, BofA and Goldman Sachs owning the world, but I'm not sure there's a way out without some sort of intervention.

Re: Election Twitter: Nice try, but…

All Twitter has to do is stop being paternalistic and give power back to the people; e.g. restore track and IM services. I'm touched that it sparked you to take the time to leave a comment.

Many hugs to all of you. :)

Re: A Proper Obituary For My Father

Thank you. I was really distressed when I heard that Intense Debate had been acquired, because I would much rather see the competition continue between ID and Disqus on equal footing. I also don't want lockin to Intense Debate when I'm happy using Disqus.

Now, they just have to get the comments formatted for lame BB browsers and I'll be totally 100% satisfied.

Re: Why Evangelical Christians Should Vote for Obama

Mary, I'd love to read your post when it's written. It is so sad to me that
the dogmatic and extreme segment of Christianity is hijacking reasonable
debate in favor of pronouncements like that. Better that the Congress takes the Gingrich advice and stands down, really looking at prudent and long-lasting ways to resolve this.

It took 30 years or so to come to this point. It cannot be fixed in a day or a weekend or even with the sweeping pen on a bailout plan that is so flawed it doesn't pass the smell test.

Bush wants to tell folks the markets will melt down tomorrow if something doesn't happen tonight, and that's just not necessarily so. That Bush says so with the endorsement of Paulson looking on does not make it true, any more than Colin Powell's statements were true about Iraq.

Re: Quick question (Scripting News)

No. what utter insanity. my verdict would be the same today as it was when I wrote my own post on this last night: we would get the dictatorship we deserve.

Re: Open Letter to Sen. She's meeting with Karzai next week -- a meeting that should be hammered upon by Obama, Biden, and every other surrogate out there. Karzai is a shill installed by the Bush admin, and trying to paint a meeting between the two as evidence of her readiness to be President is the most cynical, bogus PR move I've ever seen.

I hope you are right. But I'm telling you, she's a trojan horse that needs to be taken care of before she explodes in October.

Re: Open Letter to Sen. (See my reply to roadkillrefugee below).

With that said, I'm willing to be wrong. I WANT to be wrong. I want this election to go to Obama. But I am seeing some swings in the downticket races that are concerning, and leave me wondering about whether the national polls are really accurate.

Re: Open Letter to Sen. Barack Obama

For the better part of two weeks I've been able to ignore those who contended that he needed to go after Palin. Two things this week changed that. Bill Clinton's incredible interview where he did everything but endorse Palin, and two conversations. One with my not-entrenched-not-convinced spouse, and one with my oldest friend. The spouse thinks Palin is unqualified and a terrible choice, but not bad enough to turn away from McCain. Frankly, I'm not sure what IS bad enough to turn away from McCain if this week didn't convince him. The oldest friend said to me, "I wasn't going to vote for McCain, and then I heard Palin. She convinced me."

This is someone who leans indie but definitely buys into the culture war. When I hear McCain snark on the trail my head goes back to the traction Clinton got with the same tactic over and over and over again.

I don't believe Obama can continue to ignore Palin. Even if it means drawing attention to what Biden says about her, he has to point her out and call her the elephant in the room that she is.

Polls are capricious. Even though he's up overall right now, there are still some swing states in play that matter. We all know that there are efforts at voter disenfranchisement and the old standard ballot-box hijackings that seem to go with Republicans, so he needs a very large margin to overcome every negative.
