This is crazy. I keep joking with my dad about being in my twenties and starting to feel a technological disconnect similar to how our parents might (must?) feel.

It's not the easiest thing in the world, no. It took me like ten
minutes to get the post up.

But I get tons of ideas while I'm running, too. I think it's just the
way the human brain is wired. I recently went to Thingamajiggr (I
*think* I spelled that right), which featured a speech by John Medina,
the guy who wrote Brain Rules, and he pointed out that the human brain
is set up to learn and think while we're moving.

In other words, we're supposed to figure things out while we're
running through the forest avoiding bears. So I guess it makes a
certain amount of sense that we do a lot of thinking while exercising.

And as for microblogging, Twitter has definitely zapped about 2/3rds
of the things that used to be blog posts for me. If I can say it in
200 characaters, I generally try to make it 140 because that's easier
and more fun that trying to make it 7 or 8 hundred for a full post.

I'm with you on both the blogging while exercising and the topic of the post.

I either over develop an idea and refuse discussion or feel I use the blog as a psuedo twitter, posting one liners. Its an awkward mix, but I'm striving for some balance between 'questions' and 'rants'. Though those are really the best content of any blog.

I also come up with my best ideas while running. Which is great until I get tired and forget the ideas. Its a serious problem! I came up with an idea of the feature story for the first issue of the campus newspaper I'm publisher for and completely forgot it once I got off the treadmill.

Gotta find some balance between the two. Micro blogging while exercising never worked for me. I can't iphone while running.

I don't think that there is a maximum limit for twitter contacts. Dunbar's number is defined for stable social relationships, while twitter straddles the area between 'friends' and 'listening in on a noisy party'. I follow some real life friends on Twitter. I also follow bloggers who I like, people with interesting posts, and aggregations of tech news. Very rarely do I need to read their tweets. If I spend a day off of twitter, I don't need to go through and read every tweet from the past 24 hours like I would for emails or phone calls.

I think the idea that Dunbar's number would impose some sort of natural limit on Twitter followers is erroneous because Twitter isn't for stable social connections. Twitter is the finger on the pulse of the tech community. Twitter is a human RSS feed. Twitter can also be for social connections, but more often than not those connections are established and maintained through another medium - face to face, phone calls, AIM, email.

When there compelling things or personal communication, it will come through another medium.

Probably a low percentage, but I don't actually know. I also think that it's a software thing not a hardware thing---in other words any smartphone with a camera could be "enabled."

The larger point is not that QR codes will heal newspaper woes. Of course they won't. The key takeaway is this:

Amy is absolutely dead-on: newspapers need to start using their print product to drive online interaction.

But are consumers ready for that? What percentage of consumers own cell phones that are compatible with the QR images and of that %, how many get their news online vs from a print paper?

Is Ziphone 1.1.4 compatable? If so, he's faster than most of the other teams or 1.1.4 didn't do much to stop jailbreaking :)

Probably the best flickr related app is one that prevents the iPhone from resizing outgoing pictures in email. I actually keep running into issues emailing to my flickr address so I'm unsure how much the quality changes when it resizes (yes, i realize the irony of promoting a program I installed and then never used.), but I hear it does make a difference.

I'm semi-following SDK related rumors, but one choice bit I heard was that apple was not going to charge (or not going to charge a lot) for apps that the developers want to distribute for free. I think that completely throws any predictions about price points out the window as people eventually migrate to free + huge audiences and some pro / additional features upgrade for $$.

AIM was awesome but I'm debating if a native install is better than www.meebo.com since they added an iphone specific interface. If you haven't already, check it out. Its pretty smooth.

Its sort of funny. I'm on my 4th iphone, but none of them have been replaced for software related issues and I've jailbroken and modded every one. Not like I'm doing high level hacking on them, but I've just run the gauntlet on hardware issues. Speakers blow out the day I get the first one, speakers blow out on replacement phone, screen shatters on the next replacement. Now I'm on the 4th with invisishield on the front and back. So far no scratches / breaks / damages though I was very surprised in the difference in picture quality between iphone #4 and iphone #3 that was dropped a lot.

Yeah, Geek credibility is plus plus with jailbreak.

If I go ahead and jailbreak I think I'll use ZiPhone, a couple of
people have told me it's the better solution.

I was talking to Andru Edwards about the whole thing though and
apparently there just aren't many good apps available right now
because a lot of developers have pulled the ones that they want to be
apple-sanctioned with the new SDK.

I think AIM is high on the list for me (although I have the 1500 text
option), but after that I'm mostly interested in games (I already use
e-mail to push photos to FlickR, works pretty well). I hear that most
of the games available now just aren't any good.

I'm on 1.1.3 right now. If I do jailbreak, I'll probably upgrade now,
jailbreak, check it out, and do a restore before I do any more
updating, just because I'm paranoid ;)

I've jailbroken all 3 iphones I've had and never run into an issue with the process. There isn't any risk of the phone being bricked if you update. From what I've heard and experienced, its safe to just update to the newest firmware with a jailbroken phone. Looking at the ziphone page, there might be some issues with updating and the jailbreaking again because application specific information remains on the iphone.

I've jailbroken with both ziphone and iNdependence and I have to say that the ziphone process is much simpler. It took me around an hour to break with iNdependence and get installer loaded. I jailbroke my new iphone with ziphone during work on campus in 15 minutes (including the standard 'oh shit, i clicked the wrong button' time)

I do have some issues the applications. The signal to noise on the applications seems especially high for someone who doesn't need VNC access to their server or similarly applications. Right now I have an irc client, an instant messaging client, a camera tweak, and a program to push pictures to flickr. Beyond that, I haven't found that many applications that definitively add to the iphone.

I still think its worth jailbreaking if only for the 1 or 2 applications that do seem essential (irc / aim access and flickr access) and for the geekcredibility++;
