thank you spirisol for your suggestions. I've not seen the film avatar, but did take my family to see christmas carol, then afterward read the actual from Dickens, which is so rich in images without being 'given' them via 'cinema.'

Re the 'news,' have spoken to many journo associaitions, press groups and news orgs about the value of story and paucity of story in our times. As you know, those who have the ears to hear...

re Jungians; many of the old timers used to make in their books and speeches, watered down references re Nazis esp when/if they themselves were being confronted strongly by pro-some-other-psychology followers that Jung was a Nazi sympathizer. This was esp true about 20 years ago.

Myself, the Jungians wouldnt be my choice to read for depth on this period of history 1930-1950 if I wanted to truly know and see, but other writers and poets who were first person witnesses .... who have little to defend other than the soul, and who weren't swallowed up in various 'media-made' points of view, defenses of their professions, etc... There's a lot to be said for breadth, depth that comes from truthful memoir ...and often enough based in the idea that people are born good and born free, no matter whoever else insists otherwise.

There is one essay that Jung wrote, that I return to time and again, however. It is a short overview of what it takes to 'make' a dictator. I find Jung's imaginings in that short piece as useful about nations as about the everyday minarets in families and golden boys and girls at work.

I have a poem for you. This poem is about three of us.
The first is a twelve-year-old girl, one of the boat
people crossing the Gulf of Siam. She was raped by a
sea pirate, and after that she threw herself into the
sea. The second person is the sea pirate, who was born
in a remote village in Thailand. And the third person
is me. I was very angry, of course. But I could not take
sides against the sea pirate. If I could have, it would
have been easier, but I couldn't. I realized that if I
had been born in his village and had lived a similar life
- economic, educational, and so on - it is likely that I
would now be that sea pirate. So it is not easy to take
sides. Out of suffering, I wrote this poem. It is called
"Please Call Me by My True Names," because I have many names, and when you call me by any of them, I have to say, "Yes."

agreed Ron. We havent seen video of bin laden for what now, 7 years? Our government has ability to match voice timbre and cadences et al on their high tech equip. Heck, if you and I have a mac, we have the ability to check voice levels, fuzz and glottals etc by sound wave comparisons of same words.

It is odd to many isnt it, that so few people seemed to question whether the latest 'bin laden' mocked up tape recording is real or not. No doubt his kith and kin carry on, but I think it's pretty sure Bin is gone.

For one thing, he was obsessed with being filmed and being on camera. He loved to play 'you cant find me, here i am, now I disappear, ha ha.'

That kind of temper doesnt change, in fact, becomes deeper as an obsessive person in power becomes older. I know, I know, not mentioning any other names. lol

dear Ron and JSpencer. From my author grapevine, I hear Rove has a book coming out in the spring 2010, and we will hear much more from him. I also hear in the underground that some book publishers/editors (shocking) are publishing he and others as their personal way of attempting to tip the scales of pub op. (Big pubs like Bertalsmann as you know have great influence still by which voices they squelch and DONT publish... all under the guise of course of economic realies, yet many of their ultra con books dont sell through. Doesnt matter, those books of ultra conservatives are literally subsidized by the mainstream novelists who bring in the big bucks. Pub is known for robbing Peter to pay Paul, as we say )

Also on grapevine Ron, is rumor of 'plan' to sequentially release various targeted titles into US pop in an orderly blitz leading up to 2012 election. This will include a flurry of further Keys, Tancredo, Huckabee, Bayh, Mormon-man, sorry my file drawer just slipped closed, and the new ultras from NYT-- the D man, and fresh blood, as well as Buchanan, both Bay and brother, and ultra conserv bishops of churches, and the old women, michelle and ann, and the young women, including Miss McCain.

watch for it. It will likely be a publishing phenom the likes of which we've never seen before. One 'un-named source' who spoke on condition of anon, said that the idea is to take over the front tables at B and N, and other chains, including Costco, Walmart, airports, etc. To dominate.

My question still stands: Who will lead the way in the science of peace?

returning troops/ protest. then tidbits, there's the ongoing pestilence of Pastor Fred and his ghouls who do their protests at vets funerals. And the motorcycle brigades that have come to drown him the heck out revving their hogs, thankfully.

Senator Coburn of OK, likewise will earn the eternal opprobrium of some vets and their families who will see him as unable to deliver the meat just because there appears to be too much lettuce in the sandwich. You and I and other commenters here have had this discussion before. Obstructionists creat the party of 'No" trope over and over. Timely problem solvers. despite party affiliation... those who differentiate clearly too and effectively, usefully, quickly, are the breed we're holding out for. In our time. Jer, I think that the media has often done good in terms of informing the public about mental health issues. But they have also done great damage; such as continually interviewing the raving Charles Manson who is very ill, and acting as though he is some sideshow freak who ought have weight given to his disordered thinking.

I dont think we know everything. But I am always in love with people like yourself, who continually look to learn, and revise and find the ways through. That kind of inquisitiveness takes it over imbedded position, any day. Let us continue, ok?

I think too Jer, that like what is called 'differential diagnoses' there are cultural diagnoses, legal 'diagnosis' and political 'diagnoses,' and others. I think all may apply. Murder in one light certainly. Terrorism, yes, it is easy to recruit certain of the mental afflicted to violence. Extreme mental disturbance, yes, very likely. I think that each has its lens. Hopefully to help us understand better how all three of these can horribly go together.

That Maj Hasan is a Muslim can, I think, only matter depending on what brand he follows. I've been in Christian churches where I am appalled at what the preacher is preaching. It depends not on the religion, I dont think as much as where the emphasis on the religion is placed. I think all religious texts I've read have their calls to war on the enemy in one way or another. The few that dont are exceptional in that particular respect. But also, those very texts that say 'smite the middanite' and similar, also have long long tracts of care, regard, love and holiness, about 95:5, or less

ft, I think people more than noticed. As I noted in article, people including myself, have reported, sometimes to have those who have the authority, turn away the reports. We have yet to know the facts in this case of who reported to whom.

People reported with concern prior to massacres at columbine, virginia tech. And I think you will find in the military too, in this case of Maj Hasan, there was at least one if not more who reported on Maj Hasan.

Many religions have book tracts that speak of the unbeliever and smiting others, including Christianity. My remark was about people suffering from paranoid schizophrenia, finding in often ancient or modern religious ideas correspondance with their disorder that puts extreme division on the world; dark and light.
