Statistics are good things and so are accomplishments no doubt. But a lot of factors are at play across generations eg whether the team was good, style of play, 3 pt line, team scoring etc. My best example of a player always overlooked for these reasons is Vernon Payne. Took IU from Last to first in the B10 which has not been done ever again. Why has the 1966-67 team never been feted ? An extraordinary team during bleak times

I actually think the front court will be adequate but not able to win us games unless they surprise on defense. It will be the backcourt that will need to perform well together to win games. By win games I mean outplay the other team. If our guys can play lockdown defense and create TO's we will be fine.

From the brief clips I have seen of him I believe he will be a big surprise because:

1. Canada clips showing him knowing exactly where to be to get his shot
2. He seems to like setting screens
3. He can roll out to 3pt arc to take a shot and hit it 51% of the time

If , a big If I admit, he is defended by the opposing 5 player he is going to be a situational nightmare as he must be defended outside the arc leaving space for our drivers

Let me make my point a different way just for fun.

1) If we are relying on spacing and the opposing 5 is defending no one then he just plugs the strong side space trying to take away the drive and finish.

2) If we start to screen with our 5 and the 5 defender does not go with him but still positions himself to play the ball then the screen at best yields a jump shot not a drive

3) If its Priller on the screen and he hits 50+% from 3 then the 5 must defend and the player who got the screen can roll to the basket w/o the opposing 5 there

I saw HS highlights of these but cannot recall much at IU. It starts with getting in the right spot on the floor, recognize the opportunity and move, then catch the pass. Both seem difficult for him in the past. I want to be wrong

If I were IU's opponent this year I would not even defend the 5 unless it is Priller. I would force HMP, Davis and freshmen April and Holt to prove they can be an offensive threat in the 4 OUT 1 IN MOTION ( or dribble drive ) offense while I focused on the drivers and shooters. My shot blocker would clog the lane and focus on moving with the ball not my assignment presumably Perea

IMHO Perea does not catch well enough to make plays in this offense except put backs and Davis may be just a bit too small but the better choice.

So why do I say Priller ? Because he can set screens at the 3 pt line and then step back to pop a 3. This is consistent with Villanova's "POP" and " WING" offensive sets and he MUST be defended.

He reminded me of Trey Burke when he faked the drive and pulled up for the shot as well as his change of direction. If SR keeps turning the ball over RJ may just get some of his minutes

Both players have issues with shot mechanics. Matt shoots in this video from in front of his face. That will get stuffed in college

RJ not only drifts left but falls forward a bit off balance. Not sure I would want to change his shot too much because at least it comes off his hand over his head

We get another chance tonight to see if our team is progressing. I did not have win vs loss expectations this year anyway so "progress" is my yardstick.

I have seen progress from NV since his HS all star games as well as SR . I have seen progress from YF from last year. But sadly I have not seen enough progress from WS, JH, TW, EG , HMP and the team as a whole to be satisfied.

I would be happy tonight if we actually saw some offense run for TW on purpose.

For those who like to love or hate CTC this is a good game to see if we learned anything from the first game. I say this because we got beat by a clear defensive strategy we could not adjust to.

1. Hollowell inbounds non-pass
2. Vonleh in bounds pass
3. SHeehey inbounds pass
4. 10 sec violation #1
5. 10 sec violation #2

You have to ask at this point: "when do we start coaching for next year " and " how do we end the season on a positive note"

If there were 1 or 2 things explaining this loss I would post them. Instead I think there are so many failures that the coaching staff needs to take a hard look at itself and what it is doing.

Now the season needs to be about developing a higher level of play for the B1G Tournament even at the expense of losing a number of games before that.

My top 2 changes would be:

1. Press the entire game until we are good at it. We cannot prepare for the press if we are not good at it in practice.

The Goal: Learning how to handle the ball under pressure

2. So we all want NV to touch the ball and we run a dribble drive featuring a high balls screen that does not work. Then I would go to the FLEX where every player must screen and cut. We should do this until we finally have somebody other than Devin Davis who can set a screen that works. Better screens means more NV touches on the roll or off a screen for him

The Goal: learning how to set up a screen, accept a screen and cut off of a screen by all players

Personally I do not think CTC had much choice. I would have preferred SR but he was killing us with TO's. I think the goal was to rely on HELP if EG could not stop the drive. I suppose you would have preferred YF but he was regularly beaten as well. If you re watch the plays there was NO HELP at all not even anybody looking. If there is a coaches mistake I think it is that we do not have a "pack Line" type alternative D for end game situations. Hopefully we will not see Frazier tonight in the same game situation

I really like this kind of analysis but in this case I am struggling to find wisdom in it ............. what does all this mean ?

In previous seasons I would have concluded that giving up a lot of assists was because our HELP D was poor ........ but this year I am just not so sure about that.

I am thinking we need more info on how our D generates offense if at all or do we waste our good D on TO's .

As for CTC 's coaching ? I do not think this analysis tells me anything directly about that except that the team is getting better on defense.

My criticisms have mostly been the difference between my preferences and his , not about his ability to coach within his preferred style

I am not sure how the analysis accounts for periods Vonleh is on the bench. Does this analysis only look at periods he is in the game ?

Also the implication here is that getting NV the ball is our team's problem and not the other team's adjustment during the game. Teams and players adjust to the competition .

So accepting the analysis , which I too love to see, what can we do to get him touches ?

1. Since the pass from the wing is the best place to feed I would play Yogi more on the wing and SR more at the top

2. SInce NV's ball screens do not get him a pass on the roll we could use a weakside player to screen for NV as he rolls to see if we can shake him loose in the lane toward the basket

3. NV could also screen for a wing like Sheehey who cuts to the basket , if he can then also cut to the basket perhaps he is also open or in a mismatch if they switch

It is very hard to feed him down low with a pure pass when teams sag on us. We need to get him in some space if we want more touches

Of course I completely agree. Against UM I think the screening is most important because I do not see them as tough . A few Tom Pritchard screens and they think twice about trying to break over the top. I see DD as our best hope

On defense NV/HMP MUST hedge out on the dribbler if it is Levert or Stauskas and stop the rhythm and direction

I politely disagree with your basic assignments although I am sure we will see this during the game. I never disagree w/o a reason so here it is:

On DEFENSE:

SR on Levert because he is too quick and shifty for SHeehey and SR is not strong enough to hold off Stauskas.

I am tempted to put " foul expendables" on Stauskas like TW, JH, DD, JH whose only jobs are to deny the ball and force him to work hard and drive it vs the 3pt shot. Sheehey and SR are not expendable

Sheehey on GR3 because he runs the floor better than Stauskas

I also like some trapping in this game even though we are not so good at it yet

NV/HMP MUST hedge out on the ball screen and stop the dribble of Levert or Stauskas , he can let the others go .

On Offense

I am completely lost as to what CTC can do differently since we seem never to change. If it were me I would play Davis , Howard, AE alot and their job is to set multiple screens off the ball per possession to get other players in the offense instead of Yogi Yogi Yogi all the time.
I do not consider UM a tough team and Davis nearly took the head off 2 NEB players last time out.

Once they feel the contact I think they will be less aggressive on D as the game wears on

OK Creativity and Stubborness but give me something at the game level not 100,000 ft. Here is my shot :

1. Our half court offense is too centered on one player , Yogi on the pick & roll. I propose we develop another 3 players/schemes who can start us in the offense. I like back screens for Vonleh to drive the ball as a beginning. I have more for later.

2. Clearly our offense is not good , therefore we need to be killer on defense and "killer" means a trap or 2 somewhere on the floor

3. Usually we set weak screens, players utilize the screen the wrong way and about 1 per possession is all we get. We need , in effect, a constant screener , multiple screens for multiple players per possession. This is why I would advocate Davis more PT as he sets the best screens on the team. Last night his screened man disappeared for seconds from my tv screen. Howard can be that man too.

SOrry but I really hate things like " awareness" from CTC as reasons for poor play. How do you break that down to kid ............ tell him to do more looking around ? If an X is us and an O is them where do I put "awareness" on my clipboard in a half court set.

I too hated the zone against IL , especially when Rice was killing us w his shooting ...........but then it worked . I like it better however when SR is in the hot scorer's face and we deny him the ball
