Talking privately with other NASA scientists I heard that the only reason Schmitt went to the moon was because another much more qualified geologist was discovered to have had a heart abnormality and could not go. As it was, Schmitt messed up even the simple geologic tasks he was sent to perform and the science of the mission was botched. Not something NASA generally brags about.

I went the article referenced above. Jack Schmitt wrote: "'Consensus,' as many have said, merely represents the absence of definitive science. You know as well as I, the 'global warming scare' is being used as a political tool to increase government control over American lives, incomes and decision making..."

No, "consensus" does not mean any such thing as "the absence of definitive science". It means that the vast majority of scientists in the field of climate change have determined that it's 99.9999% certain that human activities are causing global warming and that we should begin doing something about it.

Schmitt's rhetoric demonstrates that he is speaking from a political standpoint, not a scientific one. If he was presenting a scientific rebuttal to global warming, he would have presented a carefully prepared series of studies, charts, graphs, etc. Schmitt is obviously being paid by the energy industry to shill for them, using only his "fame" and his apparently worthless PhD in a science from Harvard.

Thankfully, we don't have to wince at having this hack-for-hire as our senator any more.

Re: Guv’s approach to budget woes is shortsighted

Daniel,

I just checked Wikipedia and found the following concerning Merrillville:

Notable People from Merrillville:

* Karen McDougal, model, actress, Playboy Playmate of the Month of December 1997 and 1998 Playmate of the Year
* Guy Sternberg, botanist, arborist
* Gregg Popovich, NBA coach
* Jeff Samardzija, pitcher for the Chicago Cubs
* Eugene Wilson, NFL player,
* David Neville, Bronze Medal Finalist and Winner of Gold Medal, 2008 Beijing Olympics, Track & Field 400m

==============

You are not on this list. Now he has little say over the competing projects, which has led some to suggest there could be a Klondike-style gold rush for water."

Because of dated water regulations in New Mexico, it seems that the State may have no jurisdiction over the extraction of these salty waters. A trillion gallons of brackish water is a lot of water. But after the expensive magic has squeezed a few gallons out of a thousand gallons of brine there is the matter of all that concentrated, nasty brine. This highly soluble, semi-toxic crud is not something you can just dump into a landfill for a few bucks. In whose backyard or whose aquifer will it be injected into? How much will it cost to handle, transport, and dispose of these wastes, given that they will always exceed what "clean" water you are able to squeeze out of the brine?

Deep extraction, while expensive, is only one stage of the whole life cycle of these salty waters. Apart from the greedy county commissioners with dreams of uncontrolled sprawl, are there any actual engineers who have analyzed how the development of all this miraculous water will affect the rest of us? Fortunately, at the waste disposal stage the State will have some jurisdiction - and inject some reality - into this gold-rush mentality scramble. Anyone investing in this possible scam will need to know the full costs involved in this "brackish-water boom."

Re: Spending, spending and more spending in Santa Fe

Not that anyone particularly cares about this tirade (above) but I wonder what Dan would have to say for himself in reply to Republican Joe Monahan's column today (http://joemonahansnewmexico.blogspot.com/):

"Time for the bizarre case of the soon-to-be out-of-power State House minority whip Dan Foley of Roswell. I watched Obama's 1st press conference today. Again he cautioned that digging ourselves out of the hole we're in will take time, and requires that politics and partisanship as usual be put on hold. I think the people he has on his economics team are smart and moderate in their views on what needs to be done first - another stimulus and extending unemployment benefits (sad it has to be done, but it does.)

His appointment of Rahm Emanuel as his Chief of staff leaves me with questions, but I do think Emanuel will get things organized quickly, having been there before in the Clinton era. I buy into the idea that Emanuel's key job will be to try to keep as least the Democrats in Congress focused, if not to help negotiate with the R's too. I thought O's response to the question on Amajinedad's letter was right. He backed off the opportunity to repeat what he said early on - that he would talk to the Iranians with no preconditions and repeated the policy that Iran's development of an N-bomb would be unacceptable - something the Bush administration and the Europeans also agree with.

As you say, numbers count, and Obama does not have a super majority in the Senate, especially if Lieberman jumps ship as is being reported. Like it or not, Obama has the sense to realize he has a great opportunity to be President of all Americans, not just 6/5 of us.

What I'm trying to say is that the country needs to work together to get anything done. I take issue with your stated view that one party can do whatever it pleases and run roughshod over the other party without even trying to compromise. All Republicans are not radical right-wingnuts, and all Democrats aren't radical left-wingnuts either. In the end, the centrists from both parties will get us where we need to go.

Re: A mandate for cooperation and bipartisanship

Glad to see "not much sense" in the opening of your posting.

I agree with your general thrust, however, that numbers matter in politics. It is up to President Obama to show everyone that he's got the chops to help turn around the mess he's been handed.

But surely you're not arguing that there is no mess, that our economy, foreign policy, and health care system do not need radical adjustments. You can't be that blind, right? Good.

McCain and Obama conducted a very long, very open debate as to how they would deal with America's problems. Millions of Americans made the choice that Obama's solutions were superior and voted for him. If Obama can't begin to turn these around, he'll be hustled out of office in four years and someone with others ideas can try. If Obama does well, he'll serve eight years and be the hero.

I think President Obama has the right ideas and instincts to be a major force for positive change in the country, change that we desperately need. This is clearly an incorrect interpretation of the results of November 4th, Heath, and it's important that you recognize this early before you get all hot and bothered when you see what is about to happen. Remember that little word: "CHANGE"? It is coming.

The same Congressional Republican leadership hacks that promoted the Iraqi War, the deregulation (and self-destruction) of the American financial system, the legalization of torture, and cooperated with all of the evils of the Bush Administration, all of these Republican "leaders" are still in place. Their Red States they inhabit saw fit to return them to Congress in spite of their loathsome complicity in all of Bush's crimes against America and humanity. President Obama is supposed to cooperate with this worthless scum?

No, the American people have spoken and sent President Obama to Washington with an over seven million vote majority, MUCH larger than anything Bushie Boy received for his "mandate." On the contrary, the much reduced Republican contingent in Congress needs to cooperate with President Obama and the enlarged Democratic majority in the US Congress. The GOP needs to come groveling to the Democrats now. The train is about to leave the station and the American people expect change, as in "different from the last, disastrous eight years." Now is no time for moderation, so get used to change.

And if GOP Congressional members want to sit and snipe from the sidelines, well, that gives the Democrats plenty of time to organize, fund-raise, and raid their GOP districts next time and dump them, too. It's been done in many "Red States" this cycle, and will be done in many more next time.

We need universal health care, Republicans. We need an end to Bush's vanity war in Iraq. We need to strongly re-regulate Wall Street and lower taxes for the American middle class (Remember them? They voted the GOP out of office a few days ago.) America has been screwed by Bushie Boy and his fellow criminals for eight years. That is over!

Goodbye Bushie Boy and all your fellow travelers. Good luck in playing Solitaire out there in the wilderness that you have so richly deserved!
.
.
.
.

Re: Obama campaign and RNC tangle in court over vote caging in NM

Hello;

Scenario:- WHICH ONE IS FOR TO BE?

Obama gets presidency and so;

1. ACORN, agency with long history of fraud and dishonesty., along with related not-too-good-for-America individuals such as, Rezko, Ayers, Alinsky, and others

3.Afiliations and associations with people of questionable integrity and volatil conduct and hate-expressionism such as Wright, in addition with PLO key-figures, and not to mention endorsements and well seen as ‘friendly’ , by Hamas, Hezbolaah, and others terrorist factions.

That is Obama in a nutshell.

Now, if you add to that, the constant denial he poses to alll this facts, and on top of that CONSTANT EVASIVE to be quuestioned by the people of America, not to mention the EVIDENTLY SOCIALIST/MARXIST/COMMUNIST PLANS he has for the future of our great country.

Well,…. this one alone is totally NOT THE AMERICAN WAY.

I will elaborate further more, another time, but for now to me and many others, he is a threat to our way of life!

OBAMA IS A CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER!

OBAMA IS AN ENEMY OF THE STATE!

Did you ever thought this way?

I see this in Obama. I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE.

I see in McCain, the true hero that is willing to fight for our great country, for he has THE AMERICAN WAY.

So, in conclusion, McCain is A TRUE AMERICAN HERO. I certainly do not know how, in the galaxy to call Obama for the only thing that seems to fit is : - ENEMY OF THE STATE.

I will talk to you latter….just think of this for now., if you will.

Sincerely,
Daniel Cabrera
Merrillville, Indiana

Re: NYT: McCain to campaign in NM on Election Day

Cabrera said: "But this only just for starters , since much, much more could be said"

Jeeez, I hope he means until tomorrow, not until forever.

Re: Opinion of one

I thought the Urinal took its endorsement marching orders from its national owners, and I'm sure those corporatists have been pushing the Bush clone all year.

And if owning one newspaper gives you more free speech than another person, what does owning hundreds of papers give you?

Of course, it's not that anyone I know reads the Urinal in the first place.
