I was all set to lodge major objections to this list when I saw how low “Anytime,” “All My Life,” “Too Close,” (Billboard’s own top song of 1998 declaration) and “Nice and Slow” ranked, but I decided to read to the end anyway. And you redeemed yourself with that #1 ranking: “Are You That Somebody” is truly a masterpiece and well deserved. The Top 10 could use some shuffling as well, I’d rank “Torn” at #2, it was absolutely inescapable in 98. Great variety but questionable rankings until #1.

He’s feeling the pressure to top his debut album and the massive success of Body Like A Back Road. It’s understandable, I would likely be too. But here I was thinking he was putting the finishing touches on a sophomore project to send his career to the next level and here he reports that he basically hasn’t even started yet. Bummer. Sounds as if he’s trying to temper expectations with this new single as well.

Well, obviously you're in the majority because people are buying, streaming, and requesting this song on the radio more than any other song and have been for months now, hence why it is Number One for a 12th week. Whether you enjoy it or believe it doesn't 'deserve' to be is irrelevant.

No, you are mistaken. It has never been the calendar year. Billboard needed to shave off a month in order to edit and publish year end charts, that is why the charting year began in December and ended in November. This has always been so. I've been following Billboard charts since 1984.

I wasn't aware that the BB200 Album of the Year is now solely tallied by sales. That seems fair...the inverse point system was dated. Now if they'd just change the charting year so that it's identical to the calendar year, that would be best.

BB Top 200 year end chart is not based on just sales. They're still tallied by a point system, where longevity factors heavily. Adele will have far and away the year's biggest selling album but using the aforementioned criteria, she and Drake will likely battle for Top 200 album of the year.

Thing is, by offering these exclusives, artists are not so much sabotaging their careers but instead undermining the credibility of Billboard's chart system and the way media consumption is measured. It really isn't about sales or certifications or even chart positions anymore. Artists are in a position to cut out the major labels' distribution fees and keep a greater share of profits. Billboard is no longer the arbiter of what's truly popular anymore because they can't find a way to include new media distribution credibly without sacrificing the integrity of 50 years of chart records. A 'number one' album or single no longer offers the prestige it once did now that artists have more distribution options. I think this is ultimately good for the quality of music and another death blow for the traditional music industry as we knew it.

You are confusing Billboard's projections based on one day sales information after product has hit the market with their reporting of industry projections in advance of its release. This article is based on the latter. Any projections made after November 21 will be based on actual one day sales and much more accurate.

2.5 million seems inflated. I've always believed that NSYNC record was unmatchable. 1.8-1.9 million sounds about right.
