You would think that, if anything, the opposite would happen and his unpopularity with congress would help him. But for whatever reason, I keep hearing that phrase repeated by the casually informed voters.

Re: The Corner | National Review Online

I'll also add that there's a portion of Kasich supporters, many of whom here in Indiana seem to mistakenly see a likeness to Mitch Daniels in Kasich, that really, really, disliked the Cruz/Kasich neutrality pact. But I'm not sure their numbers are large enough to matter a great deal.

Re: The Corner | National Review Online

Trump's greatest success has been his ability to label Cruz as, "even worse than me." I can't tell you how many people I've spoken to who are only casually informed that state they dislike Trump but that Cruz is just as bad, often repeating the phrase, "he's the most disliked person in congress." I really do not understand how this argument has been able to take hold so strongly, but it is very prevalent among the casual GOP primary voters I've spoken to.

Re: Trump-To-Win-Indiana-Decisively | National Review

Polls in Indiana are notoriously bad. We have one of the strictest no-call laws in the country, and that includes political polling. I'm not saying they are right or wrong, I'm just saying they are bad and unreliable and we'll see what happens once everything is counted later tonight. Four years ago the polls thought Pence would win easily and he ended up barely winning with under 50% of the vote.

Re: The Corner | National Review Online

It's ridiculous. They are electronic ballots, just delete the ones who have dropped out, it's not difficult. But difficult is a relative term when discussing government tasks.

It's also interesting to note that Eric Holcomb, who was initially running in the Senate primary but dropped out to become Lt. Governor, was not listed on the ballot. Why was he removed while all the presidential candidates were left on there?

Re: The Corner | National Review Online

The are nine Republican candidates on the ballot in Indiana: Bush, Carson, Christie, Cruz, Fiorina, Kasich, Paul, Rubio, & Trump. I suggest you think hard about why you so highly value the opinions of those who work against the cause of life and liberty.

Re: The Corner | National Review Online

We are united against the imbeciles who say things like Indianians.

Re: The Corner | National Review Online

You just declare which ballot you want at the voting center, it's completely open.

Technically, the law says you can only voter in a party's primary if you voted for at least one member of that party in the last general election. Trump is leading in the polls in Indiana, and I live in an area of the state where, theoretically, you would expect Trump to be popular, and in fact there are more Trump yard signs around than any other presidential candidate. Personally, while I do not consider myself a member of the Republican Party, I vote almost exclusively for Republican candidates, and so do most of the people in my social circles. Yet, I have not personally spoken to a single Trump supporter face to face. I apparently do not know a single one, out of all my relationships with reliable Republican voters. Who are these people? Where are they? Because none of my friends, no one at my parish, no one at work has spoken up and declared themselves a Trump supporter.

When I say I don't understand how someone can support Trump, I mean it literally, because I apparently don't even know anyone who does.

Re: The Corner | National Review Online

That's not exactly it. Everyone who has expressed this view to me has only a casual view of what congress has or has not done, let alone Cruz. They have just heard, "most disliked in congress," and translated it to, "he's not very good so I shouldn't vote for him," and the thought process on their opinion of Cruz is completely separate from their thought process on their opinion on congress, even though it was the statement, "most dislike in congress," that led them there.

Re: The Corner | National Review Online

It kind of amazes me actually. I cannot understand this disconnect people have where in one instance, they state their dislike for congress, and in the next their concern that Cruz is disliked by the other members of said Congress. It's like Boehner has run some mass hypnosis on the Republican primary voter pool.

Re: The Corner | National Review Online

Yes, I spoken to several people the past couple weeks, and while they greatly dislike Trump and would not vote for him, have been convinced that Cruz, "is just as bad." That has been Trump's real campaign success, when Cruz points out how terrible he is, he just says, "and so are you," and people believe him.

Re: The Corner | National Review Online

Listening to other voters sign in at the voting center this morning gave me real confidence my fellow citizens. Heard 3 people, when asked which party ballot they wanted, say neither or that they want an independent ballot. After it was explained to them that in the primary they have to specify a party, one asked which one Trump was on and another asked which one Hillary was on. The low-information and no-information voters are real and they are prevalent, which of course anyone watching Trump's wins already knows.

Re: Ritz: Indiana shouldn’t expand its voucher program

Ritz shows that she is just the representative of the unions and not of students and families, especially not lower income families. Opponents of the school choice vouchers have to face the fact that these are lower income families of 33,000 children who have CHOSEN a non-public school, and most of them are paying extra costs out of their own pockets in order to do so.

Voucher opponents should also drop this hollow and false concern about "costs". It is first of all an outright lie, and secondly it is they are never concerned with the costs or wasteful spending in public school. The voucher program by definition saves the state money, as the voucher amounts are only 90% or 50% of the amount the state would have provided to the public school. The proportion of students accepting 50% vouchers has increased every year of the program, which has continually made it less costly per student. The school choice vouchers use 2% of the school tuition money to allow almost 3% of students, all from lower income families, attend the school their family chooses at 1/3 less than it would have cost the state at a public school.

In summary, everyone is happy at the success of the program except for Ritz and her union bosses.

Re: Top 25 Best Fantasy Books Since 2010

#1 The Magicians was published in 2009
#26 The Warded Man was published in the UK in 2008 and in the US in 2009

Re: 10 More Things You Might Be Doing Wrong at Mass

Seriously, the thing most Catholics are doing wrong at Mass is not attending in the first place. Certainly more nagging about these particulars is what will draw them back. :rolls eyes:

Re: “Created for Greatness”: The Emerging Catholic Men’s Movement | Catholic World Report - Global Church news and views

If men truly felt that God was relevant and important to their lives, if they truly sought a deeper relationship with God, and if they truly desired to receive His presence in the Eucharist, then you would not be able to keep these men from Mass no matter the form of celebration. They would be like the friends of the paralytic who broke through the roof of the house where Jesus was to be able to reach him.

These men are convinced (falsely) by the pressures of society that they can achieve success and lasting happiness by their own (limited) abilities. They are convinced (falsely) that needing help from anyone, included God, is an unmanly weakness. This pride blinds them to their need for their Creator, and the resulting misery is on display everywhere.

In my discussions with those men who have fallen away from their faith, the mass almost never comes up, not even just to say it's boring. Instead, the overwhelming sentiments are that God is either nonexistent, non-important, or non-necessary.

Re: “Created for Greatness”: The Emerging Catholic Men’s Movement | Catholic World Report - Global Church news and views

The commentators who think that undoing Vatican II and reinstating the Latin Mass will return men to their faith are fooling themselves. I think the quote from author Randy Hain hit the nail on the head, “Once we realize that pride, misplaced priorities, lack of a prayer life, pornography, and a host of other obstacles are between us and Jesus, we can eliminate these sinful barriers and enjoy the relationship with him we need.”

Pride and lack of prayer are at the forefront of any man turning away from his faith. Culture teaches that men must seek and achieve success alone, and that asking for help is a weakness. Therefore, men who lack humility follow their own plan to success, not recognizing what they have received from God, and not asking what His plan for them is. This will only lead them to misery.

This lack of humility destroys the life of prayer as well. Why would someone who sees no reason to thank God and no reason to talk to God ever pray? Therefore they do not, which more completely breaks their connection to God started by their pride and sin. An invitation to prayer is the surest way to bring a man back to his faith. Asking someone to pray is asking someone to humble himself, which is often the largest challenge for a man who has fallen away. Therefore, invite and encourage the men you know to pray. Especially encourage praying the Rosary as the power of our Blessed Mother's intercession is immense.

Re: Checking in on (possible) future friends, (definite) future enemies

47-45 in four overtimes! Every turnover takes a scoring opportunity away from IU and gives another one to the opponent. I'm optimistic because you kind of assume that turnovers are a factor of youth and inexperience and there is the possibility of significant improvement that can lead to several more wins in the future.

Re: Tom Crean talks about Bawa’s progress

Yeah, the first place to look for Muniru's improvement will be on defense and shot blocking, followed closely by his ability to rebound. Offensive skill for him will be a long way down the road, if at all.

Muniru isn't as good as a freshman, but look at how much JaJuan Johnson improved as a sophomore. But like I and others have said, it will come on defense and in rebounding first.

Re: Good, Bad, Ugly: NCCU

I just want to remind everyone that IU is exactly where they were last year, at 5-5 with two non-conference cupcakes left before the Big Ten starts. Then last year, they lost to Northeastern and Lipscomb and only beat Iowa to get to six wins.

North Carolina Central is an absolutely dreadful team who has not beaten a Division I team this year. Yet they were essentially tied with Indiana at halftime. In fact four of IU's five wins are against teams (Howard, USC Upstate, Northwestern St., and NCCU) who are much worse than anyone IU played last year. The next two games offer no better competition, Bryant is winless this year, so IU had better begin the Big Ten 7-5.

But let's face it, 5-5 at this point was the low water mark for this team. They are under-performing so far this year, or at best just meeting the low-end of expectations. The only bright spot was the victory over Pitt in New York. In the Big Ten, every team except for Iowa is significantly better than Indiana (even NU minus Coble has been playing well).

Bottom line: IU for one half outplayed a team that probably couldn't manage a winning record against Indiana high schools. Creek is carrying this team and others (Rivers, Jones, Watford) really need to step up before they run off a load of losses in the Big Ten exactly like last year.
