I think we just mean different things by the term.
In any case I appreciate reading your blog though some have been less than thrilled by my positive review!

I have finished all the reviews (took 14 very long posts) and a summary post - http://goannatree.blogspot.com/2009/03/bigger-t... that has some final comments.

A.

Re: notes from off center reviewed

I think that many people take things too personally and think that others will do the same. I really do not take anything anyone has to say about my writing as a personal thing. My belief is that understanding truth and getting things right is more important that how we feel about truth and getting things right. So even if I sound polemical, that's really never my intent. My position is always, what is the issue, and how can we come to a more accurate and 'real' understanding of it - which is to say, a more pragmatic understanding of it. But I think that some folks are out for feeling better about their position in the world, including blogland, and when what they feel is a good idea is criticized, they associate the idea with the person and take it as self-criticism. I would like to move beyond that to focus on more important stuff.

I agree with the theological leanings bit as well. I would never want to pidgeon hole anyone on purpose unless I was indeed trying to pick a fight ;-)

Re: notes from off center reviewed

You are welcome. You do give me something to think about and i appreciate the polemic. I feel like i should say that i don't really want to pick a fight back without taking real time to craft a response so i usually just read and digest. Maybe i should engage more?

Also, i have tried not to guess "theological leanings" - i try to let people speak for themselves...i figured that they would correct me if they felt it necessary!

Ps:..actually the series has been going for about a month and the trackbacks only started in the last two days, but thanks for the vote of confidence (?)!

Re: Grab Bag of Great Music Sites

Pandora's great! Only Slacker and last.fm are really in competition with it, and each of those three has strengths and weaknesses depending on what you want at the given time. The other sites focus different things.

Re: publishing religious crap at the expense of truth

Great post! Humility is an important quality and it pains me to see all the rubbish out there - i rarely enter "Christian booksttores" these days - partly ebcause when i do i feel my intelligence and my spirit insulted by the amount of "human inspiration"!

"The truth is that these intelligentsia are a minority in the world. What most people lack is a sufficient stock of knowledge that will allow those not in that minority group to call their projects of religious disrepute into question from the bottom up. That is where people tend to delude themselves into thinking they have nothing of value to contribute to the norms of society."

Here in lies the irony - those humble enough to realise they are not all powerful often restrain themselves while the "intelligentsia" profit financially (and corrupt spiritually). Good sound theology is still being published but it is few and far between (i guess my opinion of what is sound is shaped by my own theology). Here's the other irony, I am a Christian in academia....i write on literature and theology and so what do i do ? - thinking carefully about what i seek to have published would be a start.

Re: Grab Bag of Great Music Sites

I love Pandora...but i'll check out a few of the other sites you mention!

Re: Blogging is Life-Changing

I was just glad to be tagged for one of these things that was actually interesting! And thanks, I think grad school did exactly what I wanted it to in that sense - give me the foundation for literature (and related things like film) that I could use to write in a less formal way for a less specialized audience. But before I didn't have that foundation and didn't know where to start.

And please, did you not see this post? Verbose indeed - certainly more so than yours! I kept thinking "I should edit this down, it's too long," but did I? No. I still have trouble editing myself.

Re: Blogging is Life-Changing

I am glad you were happy to be "it"! I like the way that you are still able to incorporate your ever increasing knowledge of film into a broader context. Ultimately, much of the way that you write is still shaped by a solid foundation of understanding literature and literary theory! But, that's why I like the way that you write - it is intelligent and thoughtful. And i have to say, you give me much to pursue in so far as the ability to write clearly and concisely....did anyone say I could be a little verbose.

Re: Favorite Films, One Letter at a Time

That's kind of weird because the programmers of Movie collector are scandanavian.

I am sorry I didn't think of this program earlier for you 0- I have been using it for a few years - seeing as I don't have many DVD's here I haven't used it much lately. It even allows you to use barcodes and scan stuff.

I told you we are everywhere. I am glad you like them!

Re: Favorite Films, One Letter at a Time

I'll have to look that up, Anna. The lending thing would've been nice last year, when I could never keep track of who had borrowed my DVDs. (Pretty sure I got them all back before I left, though, except some Buffy ones Sarah still has.)

In unrelated news, I just found out that Architecture in Helsinki is an Australian band! I've been listening to them on and off for years, and for some reason thought they were from New York or somewhere.

Re: Favorite Films, One Letter at a Time

I use movie collector a relatively inexpensive but powerful program that integrates with imdb and other online resources. It works well - they also have one for books - works well if you lend your dvd's or books to people and you want a good way to record who has them. It sorts for you in whatever way you want....

Re: It’s That Season Again…

1.Definitely not....this is about satire all the way, baby!
2. Nope...
3. I will try it...but I think it may be worth shipping over the Australian seasons..

Re: It’s That Season Again…

1. Oh, see, I thought maybe it was supposed to be a Gilmore Girls-type thing. No, huh?
2. Is that character not even in the US version?
3. Yeah, the commercials aren't pulling me in. But I'll give it at least a full episode before deciding. Are you going to try it?

Re: It’s That Season Again…

my concerns are that even though the original creators were involved in the set up over here that....
1. Molly shannon is too youn got be selma blair's mother - it doesn't work - she's supposed to be 45-50
2. Some of the jokes that were hilarious in an Australian context are just not going to work. The best character in the original was Magda Szubanski....(BABE and lots of other films) she is absolutely hilarious as Kim's overweight, netball playing, slightly daft, but loveable friend. US audiences miss out.
3. I haven't liked what i have seen thus far either...totally unimpressed.
Jandy you really should try and fid some Youtube clips of the original...

Re: Review: Vicky Cristina Barcelona

You're welcome!
