I've been using an OLD Sony Clie as a reader for about 9 months now, and nearly all of its 5.5 x 2.8 inch size is usable screen area for reading.

I found that I could adjust to a medium font size and not have any eyestrain (less than with dead-tree books, actually, since my eyes don't have to scan, just read down). Plus with backlight (turned to lowest setting) I can read at night without eyestrain or lamp either.

For $50-75 used, this might be a good solution to play with while you wait for the Kindle (or other solution) prices to come down! If you do - definitely go the Sony route. The resolution is twice as high as most standard Palm devices - 320x480 full color.

No matter which one you pick, it'll be hard to go back to "dead-tree" reading for anything other than comics... it was for me!

Re: The number one reason I want a kindle

I'll be using my iPhone for the same function.

Reads PDFs already, keyboard can be hidden when you just want to read and not type, fits in the hand better, reads more formats, doesn't charge extra to read blogs, costs less and also functions as phone, *color* browser, GPS, and all the other goodies. Single device, fits in pocket, doesn't leash you to Amazon store for new eBooks, doesn't flash light/dark on every page turn.

I really want ePaper devices to work. I just don't want to have to see a screen-flash every time you change the screen, like slow, bad interlacing.

I *totally* agree with your "lean forward, lean back" analogy, though. I expressed a similar sentiment on a private mailing list just recently. Being able to hold your "loungable" reading material anywhere you like and get comfortable with it, will indeed resuscitate the book industry.

-Rick (@Fungible)

Re: Me And My Kindle In Silicon Alley Insider

Fair enough... I've been reading ebooks on an old Sony Vaio for a while now, and loving it - especially the one-hand page turns and the backlight so I can read at night without keeping my wife up with the bedside light on, and the ability to touch-scroll or scroll-wheel pages with a fractional thumbroll.

I wish they'd do an e-paper device that had an option for backlight (indiglo?) also. I'd have to play with one to see if I could get used to the flicker, but last time it was definite eyestrain.

I'm planning on getting the 3G iPhone and seeing if it'll become the uber-ebook-reader that I hope it will...

Hooray for the march of technology- glad you're enjoying your Kindle!

Re: Me And My Kindle In Silicon Alley Insider

Question - does the Kindle do the annoying "page color inverse" when changing pages, like the Sony ebook reader does?

For that headache-inducing reason alone I've stayed away from the "e-paper" devices, even though I love the concept...

-Fungible
