It's about 45 minutes over the Bay Bridge, so under 2 hrs from Frederick. If you're worried about crowds, have no fears. There is no traffic to speak of once you get across the Bridge. Definitely not in town. There isn't a whole lot to do there except a Maritime Museum and a couple of nice restaurants. It's not over run with touristy crap, yet.

I was there for a conference a few years ago and really enjoyed fishing off the piers and watching the Crab boats come in at the crack of dawn.

I was meeting with a couple of business associates from Germany in Baltimore and they asked where they could go and that's where I told them to go. They loved it.

Re: need day trip ideas

Shepardstown, WVa is a nice, quaint little college town. Not so many antique places, more arts & crafty places, little coffee shops, art displays and a couple nice places to eat. It's just an hour away, to boot.

You might also try Fredericksburg, VA. A bit more of the Civil War and Antique market theme, but a lot of nice little shops and eateries (about 1.5 hours, but take the scenic route down 15 to 17).

Re: Fishing hotspots

Mika,

I think that the Monocacy river is the best fishing spot in town. It's good for Smallmouth, primarily. You can also wade in the Potomac down by Point of Rocks & Brunswick. Lake Linganore is good fishing, but it's supposed to be a private lake. When we lived there, 1/2 the county would fish it, though.

A good place to get in the Monocacy is at the park where the Monocacy Blvd. bridge crosses, up by 26. Also, there is a small park at Micheal's Mill Rd and route 80 that is a good access point.

The lake in Greenbriar is stocked and offers excellent fishing. You can also bring a boat there (electric motor only, I think).

If you're a real die-hard and don't mind catch & release, then you can fish Cunningham Falls. The only thing worthy in there is trout and it's stocked trout only. No native trout in the state.

Re: Frederick newcomer needs help !!

I would recommend finding out which school she'll be going to. if you know this, then you will be able to search Facebook/MySpace for other kids at that school.

I don't know of any specific "monitored" chat space that's specific to teens in Frederick.

Re: Finding a place to live

I would suggest the new condos @ Carroll Creek, too. The FSK Apartments (http://www.fskapts.com/) are right above a coffee shop and 1/2 block off Market look pretty nice, and brand new but I don't know if there are any vacancies.

BTW, Guy, a friend of mine just moved out of a 1 BR in Wellington Trace and was paying around $1400/mo. I haven't looked for a rental in a long time, but I don't think you can do much better than $1500/mo downtown. We just hired a neubie scientist from Boston & she found a place on Third street this week (1BR, Bath Kitchen and sitting room) and I think she said it was $800/mo.

If Baton Rouge is moving down for a post-doc, then they would enjoy the Creek, especially if their background is in cyanobacteria!

Re: Veterinarian recommendation?

I would recommend the Glade Valley clinic, off Rt 26 & Monocacy Blvd. Very friendly staff , very good docs and the most reasonable rates for services in town. Plus it's on your side of town.

Re: Lunch Suggestions?

You can always stop in at China Garden and get all the Chinese food you want and I think the best in town. Pretty sure they also have take out Sushi! It's just east of 15 on W Patrick, only a couple miles from the Holiday Cinema.

Something Asian but less traditional, you can try Viet Aroma, in the Weis festival Plaza on Jefferson. Their Pho is the best in town and they also have a good assortment of Vietnamese dishes.

440 Prospect Blvd
Frederick, MD 21701
240-379-6716

Re: Best Area Liquor Store?

Oops, I forgot to answer the question. Ye Old Spirit Shoppe is, in my humble opinion, leaps above every other liquor shop in town in terms of diversity. If anyone has small distillery gin in the area, they'd be the first place I'd look. They may even be able to get it for you. I'll come by and grab a fifth if they can get some.

Re: Best Area Liquor Store?

I haven't heard of small distillery gins in the area, although I think it's something we can hope to have soon. It is rumored to be the next "craft" market analogous to the Micro brew surge of the late 90's.

I am looking forward to it! I love cocktails and Gin specifically. Van Gogh is about as good as it gets.

And what a shame about Franklin's burning down yesterday. We didn't go there often, but they had a surprisingly good selection of wine for a country liquor store.

Re: Police raid home of area Elementary School Principal

I am not a conspiracy theorist. We're not that small of a town that our paper would hide a story that would be picked up on many major news lines if it was credible.

What proof do you have that the intended target was a school official? If you have credible evidence, then we'll break the story.

I agree with Guy. I don't think there's anything newsworthy in this one. Everyone deserves the benefit of being considered innocent until proven guilty.

Re: Any adult sports or activities?

I should add that I play karate now, but was a founding father of the Frederick Rugby Club, playing the first 5-6 seasons in 1990-93 (or something like that). I wish I had started karate when I was younger, but had to find something competitive to keep active.

Re: Any adult sports or activities?

Why not try karate? Fitness with a purpose. I go to Golden Knights, on Industry Lane. Only $75 per month for as many as 4 classes per week, and they don't nit pick you on additional expenses like other schools. Plus, they're all volunteer instructors, which really keeps costs down.
