Browbeating left-leaning voters into accepting a mediocre centrist will cause many of them to just stay home or vote third party.

Not that I am advocating for such actions but lets be realistic, it's the truth. We can trash talk the Jill Stein voters and socialist Bernie supporters all we want but they're just going to vote Green again if the DNC establishment repeats its tired old strategy.

Re: Hatch Very Vulnerable in Utah

In summary, Democrats should learn from the lessons of 2016.

Fight for progressive policies everywhere.

Re: Quote of the Day

The crowd here does not change. It's been establishment cheerleaders for ages.

Back in 2010, no one here wanted to believe that the party was losing touch after two years of neoliberal (back then "blue dog") Democrats filibustering against healthcare, killing the public option, refusing to take real action on Wall St. after the collapse, etc. PoliticalWire was full of analysis and opinion pieces warning that 2010 would be another 1994 for Democrats. The comments then were much like they are now, essentially "what me worry? People will surely love neoliberalism. There's no way Republicans will get more votes. Everyone knows Republicans are so icky. Democrats have this in the bag."

Essentially, the attitude one finds here is the same as the Clinton campaign's attitude this year, one of living in denial, where the lesser of two evils always brings victory to the Democrats, if they can chose correctly on a couple key social issues. Meanwhile, who cares about Wall Street or bad trade deals? As long as the Republicans are still Republicans, the Democrats don't need to engage in self reflection.

Re: Democrats Must Make Inroads Into the Heartland

Agreed.

Working class people of every background can appreciate the kind of progressive policies supported by candidates like Bernie Sanders: single-payer health care, tuition-free higher education, ending constant warfare, reevaluating our awful international trade deals, scaling back the war on drugs and addressing corporate power/corruption. With such a campaign, Democrats would have soundly won PA, MI, etc.

Re: Lessons from the Tea Party

Indeed.

Some people talk in excitement about the possibility of Trump being impeached. She expected the lesser of two evils to win the day. It was the Kerry 2004 strategy all over again.

Voters didn't turn her down because they were afraid she was too old; working class voters ignored Clinton because they suspected she didn't give a damn about them.

Re: Hillary 2020?

Bullocks. If someone like Elizabeth Warren adopted the Sanders platform, she could win the presidency.

Clinton didn't lose because she's a woman or old. She lost because she's corrupt, incredibly inconsistent and caters to Wall St / big business neolib policies over progressive policies for working class people. That she supported the Iraq War doesn't help either.

Young people have friends and family who died in that war. They don't just forget about it and move on so easily. Also, they are living through the economic crash that Wall St caused. So, they are not so excited about voting for a Goldman Sachs stooge.

Clinton's policy and character flaws fill volumes. If we just want to assume it was all age and gender, we'll just see Democrats lose again when they nominate a slightly younger, male candidate who holds all the same character and policy flaws as Clinton.

I'll take an old candidate who supports single payer, living wages and less warfare over a younger, more of the same neolib.

Re: Hillary 2020?

Bernie Sanders proved that the age of the candidate is not so important. Young people can most definitely be enthusiastic about a candidate in his/her 70's.

We're too focused on image and demographics. We need to be more focused on issues.

A candidate with integrity (e.g. not taking money from Goldman Sachs) who adopts Sanders's positions should do very well. Age is essentially irrelevant.

Re: Trump Says ‘Lock Her Up’ No Longer Plays Well

...brought to you by Carl's Jr.

Re: Trump Says ‘Lock Her Up’ No Longer Plays Well

"Women's rights?"

Ha!

Trump voters don't even pretend to care about women's rights.

P.S. Ignore the brown people who might scare bigots. Instead, stick with the white guys who lobby for big business and Wall St.

I'm not optimistic about the next few elections. The Democratic Party establishment is completely clueless. As they often do, they're more concerned about the white Republican vote than the progressive non-bigot vote.

Re: Obama Wants Another Choice for DNC Chairman

That describes a major contrast between the two parties over the past decade.

Democrats can be pretty gutless.

Re: Trump Considering Creating an Infrastructure Bank

I don't think it's terribly surprising.
