I want to blog the first 30 days of my startup, but I know that the editing that will be required will not make it an honest account of what the first 30 days are *really* like.

Additionally, if I take the time to blog but I cannot be as open as I would like, then I think I might feel as if I am not being honest with *myself*. It will suddenly be very easy to be very choosy with how events, issues, problems, and mistakes are presented.

The one obvious way is to blog anonymously. I really like this idea, as I think it solves all the above problems. But I also blog because I want input from my friends and colleagues, and that will be lost in an anon blog that will be difficult to "market". So I have almost definitely discounted this as an option.

Re: 100+ Upcoming Social Media & Tech Events

There is an excellent, free-to-download "Social Media Conference Calendar" here: http://www.twojumpsahead.co... Shows most of the key social media events fro the next 12 months, from around the world.

Re: The art of the vague tweet

Ha ha. You made me laugh. I am the one who tweeted the "I love it when a great plan comes together" tweet, and even as I did it, I realised that it really was just for my own benefit. But I'd tweet it again. Here is why: I had been working on a project for three months, which (like most projects) started off with nothing but a vague idea and a spotted opening in the market. Three months of hard work, and the launch button is pressed. And immediately the benefits are obvious. So I want to share the news. With all my best friends. And no need to bore them with details. I just want them to SHARE MY JOY. It's the dot over the i.

:-)

Re: The rise of eBooks and the myth of affordability

According to your numbers, ebooks sales are about 5% of all book sales in the US. I have no idea whether this is an encouraging or not statistic, but I would venture to guess that ebook sales will continue to rise, which makes them a very viable proposition.

Two arbitary points I'd like to make:
Ebooks and printed books are not necessarily mutually exclusive. I remember, a long while back, when some management from Exclusive Books broke away to start a new bookshop chain, Facts and Fiction. At first, Exclusive Books thought that they would take a chunk of their market share, but in fact, sales *increased*. It would seem that more options created a bigger market. (This is certainly true for me: I buy ebooks that I would never buy in hard print, and vice versa)

And, as a complete aside: On my last visit to Austin, I visited a major mall, for the sole purpose of visiting their bookshop and buying a stack of them. But guess what? No bookshop at the mall! And now I hear that Barnes and Nobles is up for sale due to decreasing turnover. Very, very worrying. Online bookshops are grabbing the market, and they are the ones controlling the ebook distribution. I think we are going to see a huge change of stats in the next five years or so.

Re: The case of the non paying estate agent

Not much, I don't think. Not really. The math is more along the lines of: will I spend more than half my work time at Gekspace? If yes, then take a full desk. If not, then we cannot subsidize you past the R100 p/day mark, because we are not in fact a charity. We will be charitable enough to offer you our space even though you are not part of our permanent team, but for a fair price.

Sitting at Seattle or other coffee shop will cost you more, if you consider parking, coffee and bandwidth costs. As long as your click thru cost is lower than the average profit from that click thru, you are fine (a whole other blog post on that!). But sometimes (often) there is no "sale" on the other side...just brand building etc.

As I said, I have heard of *the same campaign* getting a CT cost of R20 on one site, and in the *R thousands* on another site. I don't want to put words into the Daily Maverick's team, but let me try and explain my logic (based on conversations with the editorial team):

Most banners are made for the "click here" mentality. But that is not condusive to the way most brands like to advertise. They don't want you to "click". They want you to "associate". Hence, have you ever seen a Louis Vuitton ad online? Nope. But there are plenty of them in Vogue, right?

Point is, the online space as it was defined eons ago by the first online publications, does not serve brands very well at all. Maverick tries to change that, by putting ONE ad per page, making it big, making it always visible and making it PERMANENT with that article/post. Thus, association at its best.

Yes, it's a new model. But I really think it is a very, very good one becasue it gives NEW advertisers a reason to be online. And even if no one clicks on the ad, it's difficult to argue that those who viewed the page (easy enough stat) missed the ad.

Re: BlackNotes

I think you are all missing a very important point: Jail4Bail did not power the social media drive - Rafiq did (mostly).

And that is the "problem" of social media: one you get your message out there, you LOSE OWNERSHIP of it. Someone (Rafiq?) can become over-passionate and with the best of intentions can actually taint your cause.

The challenge is to invite social media networking and viral spread, and yet still remain the main voice of the campaign (whether you are selling jail4bail or cotor cars).

Tough challenge, and one that social web strategist battle with every day.

Re: The case of DataPro and the Twitter

Very, very interesting story.

And wouldn't you know it, I am just writing the chapter on Twitter for the new book.... fabulous to have a local case study.

Thanks Paul !

Re: Downhill from here

Hi Paul,

I certainly cannot explain why your site has fallen in the rankings, but I am surprised because your blog is one I continue to enjoy.

But here is a question I have been meaning to ask for a while: You are one of the most connected people I know, with a strong, clearly defined online presence through the various channels.
