(Also, the record is both thin and warm. Warm, in that it sounds like it was recorded live-ish, with less keyboard fussiness than you're used to and just a metric TON of violin. Thin, in that it lacks a lot of low end or space in the recording. The songs are okay. None are embarrassing, but none will make Still Carrying On: Kansas' Greatest Hits Redux.)

Re: The Friday Five: March 27, 2015

"Moving Target" - Pushstars, After the Party ..... Good stuff, if not a bit stuck in the 90s. I think this song and band gave birth to Tonic.

"Long Division" - Slow Runner, Shiv! ..... These guys deserve a much wider audience than they have. Up there with Harper Blynn and Smallpools for my favorite new finds of the last 5 years.

"Misunderstood" - Wilco, Being There ..... Where Tweedy forsakes all pretense at pretending he didn't want to be Westerberg. (And really, didn't we all?)

"Fooled Around and Fell in Love" - Elvin Bishop, Struttin' My Stuff ..... A pleasant little ear worm pulled from history's dustbin – to my great delight – by the Guardians of the Galaxy.

"Groove Me" - King Floyd, Eponymous ..... A stone-cold classic that just makes me think of butter commercials these days.

Re: The Friday Five: February 20, 2015

I am horrified that, no disrespect to Chaka Kahn, but I meant to say Cheryl Lynn sang on Toto's "Georgy Porgy." Still tough shoes to fill, and embarrassing that it took a day of nagging doubt on my part for this brain fart to register. Get Real indeed.

Re: The Friday Five: February 20, 2015

“Georgy Porgy” by Eric Benet (from A Day In The Life)

This version doesn't do much beyond befoul the memory of Jeff Porcaro by flying in programmed drums, but yeah, what a good choice in covers. A Toto original from their first LP, which replaces the irreplaceable Chaka Khan with ... Faith Evans. Tough shoes to fill.

“High Water” by Uncle Tupelo (from Anodyne)

Jay Farrar doing what Jay Farrar did best – and, for my money, better than almost any solo thing he's done since. I know the song name-checks water. I still see trains when I hear this. Old ones. With hobos.

“Remember My Name” by Toy Matinee (from Toy Matinee)

A whole bunch of goodness here, and a whole bunch of never-realized potential. Catchy enough to be a hit, quirky enough to not have a chance. I maybe even liked this better than the single, "Last Plane Out."

“Six O'Clock News” by Kathleen Edwards (Failer)

A story of small-town revenge from Canada's answer (and I say this will all due respect and awe) to Tom Petty. Love Kathleen.

"It's Raining Men" by The Weather Girls (Success)

No.

Re: Popdose Conceptual Theater: Archer

I think you just broke Jeff's "No Tommy Shaw" rule.

Re: The First Day of Mellowmas: Earth, Wind & Reacharound

I mean, not even a "Fa-la-la, dancin' in December"? This track, like you said (sadly) ... this is the stuff bands make when they're bored. Garage fun that fades with every listen. I'll still buy the album, but it will likely get less play than "Echo." Which gets 1/50th the play of anything Petty pre-1992.

Re: Book Review: “Lovecraft’s Monsters”

I was sort of hoping your first link would lead to this: https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Re: Bottom Feeders: The Ass End of the ’90s, Vol. 103 (of 103)

So appreciate the effort that went into this. But the first ten seconds just sounded like the belt on a record player slipping. Speaking of audio weirdness, MAN there's some digital hinkyness on that Williams Brothers track. Good song, though. Rembrandts lite. I remember liking the Petty cover they did from the same LP (I think). Finally, I've always thought that the horns on Winger's "Easy Come Easy Go" just rocked. Good on him (them) for having the huevos to go that route as a hair metal act.

Re: On Reunions

When Gorky Park reunited in 2005, I know a lot of us felt that hahahahahhaa, sorry, can't finish the joke.

Re: The Friday Five: January 10, 2014

Replacements - "Hold My Life" (Tim) - Crack up in the sun; lose it in the shade. Everyone should own this album. Really, there should be a law. The perfect mix of everything good about the 'Mats before and after.

Alice Cooper - "I'm Eighteen" (Love It To Death) - The "strum-strum/dum-dum-dum-dum-dum/arpeggio-arpeggio" of the chorus is just so much fun to play, even if you don't like this song. And I like it. Like it, love it, like it, love it.

Counting Crows - "Another Horsedreamer's Blues" (Recovering The Satellites) - I feel kind of bad, because I sort of gave up on these guys after this album, and this album was only album two. I just enjoyed the first disc so much, this one simply didn't hold up. Almost 20 years (good Lord) later, it holds up better. This is one of the standout tracks for me.

Loud Lion - "Die Tuff" (Loud Lion) - The "Love Bites" clone from an absolutely note-perfect Def Leppard tribute band led by Bleu. I think it's tongue-in-cheek, but it's done so damn well it has to be the product of a fan. This is the record "Adrenalize" should have been. Sort of.

Wax Tailor - "Positively Inclined" (Hope & Sorrow) - Horn-driven hip-hop from a French DJ. Bouncy, mellow fun. Thanks, internet!

Re: Popdose 2013: Rob Smith’s Favorite Music of 2013

Now this is a list I can get behind.

Re: Bottom Feeders: The Ass End of the ’90s, Vol. 87

Poor Styx, trying so hard to be Winger on that one … Stynger?

Re: Bottom Feeders: The Ass End of the ’90s, Vol. 86

I would pay real American money for a Petty version of "Virginia." One of his trifles, sure. But trifles *are* sweet. A rare bit of sentiment from the king of bitter irony.

"Prison Sex" – Tool, Undertow. Wow. There's some musical whiplash. Love this song. This is the scary that NIN never achieved.

"Musta Notta Gotta Lotta" – Joe Ely, Musta Notta Gotta Lotta. #Boogie #Woogie #Texas #BluesRock #Funbutwhatever

"Not Through With You" – Terje Fjelde, Pop Songs. How fun is this? A POPDOSE staff original! Love every bit of this song – the lyrics, the melody, the vocals. Honestly. A favorite find of the year I found it in.

"Something To Say" – Toad The Wet Sprocket, Fear. Aaaaaannnnnd, I'm having dreams of being in college again. And missing finals.
