The pictures are bit a dated, but Big E doesn't make a lot of appearances outside of the Lone Star State. Awesome, every one of them, though. :)

Re: How To Fix That Flat Tire Yourself

Like any repair, it's only as safe as long as the tire is in good condition. Since making this repair back in January, I've daily driven the car all over the Phoenix area, in temperatures exceeding 115*, at speeds in excess of 80mph, and even taken the car out to the wilds of south central Arizona to carve up some dirt roads, spending a particular amount of time sideways with the car. The ride is smooth and steady and there's just as much air in the tire as when I last filled it.

In this case, I *plugged* a hole between treadblocks with a plug. I've seen the patches used before, often for slices in the tire (such as when someone runs over a piece of jagged metal that makes an incision). Depending on the extent of the patch job, the tire will lose a degree of integrity. Were this instance a slice in the tire, I would have replaced the tire.

Without knowing all the details of the van and rollover incident, I might suggest that the speed of the van and road conditions may have lead to the blowout, while driver panic resulted in the rollover. Short of a comprehensive, forensic analysis and witnesses, there's really no way to be sure one way or the other, but a blowout doesn't necessarily mean rollover, just as rollovers don't necessarily mean death.

If you've got a nail or screw in an otherwise good tire on the tread, I see no reason to pay Wal-mart $20 to spend two hours waiting for something as simple as this. Thanks for the comment!

Re: Best. Nothing more than marketing spin.

Personally, I sort of look forward to it. I find it funny how many Lexus owners somehow think they have something better than a top of the line Toyota. I get a kick out of visiting Infiniti G35/37 forums and seeing there's more discussion in the "Check my Rims" section than in the turbo or supercharging sections (as is the case on the Nissan 350Z forums). The marketing folks know that "Mongo only pawn in game of life," and they play up to that.

Would Toyota really shoot Scion in the face or leave Lexus face down in a ditch somewhere for not putting out? They're very conscious of appearances over there. I think Scion would either commit sepiku or they would dry the brand up and put it on a shelf for future use (just add water).

However it might be said that Toyota is using their 2nd tier brands to keep their original qualities in focus with the core, Toyota brand. Recall they originally became popular because they provided relatively simple, fuel efficient and reliable transportation. Today we joke that the Toyota lineup, lacking ye olde Celica Supra, is rather milquetoast, but how does what Toyota offer today compare with what they offered back in the day which laid the foundation for their continual domination of the auto market?

It's interesting to think about. As demand stabilizes at lower levels, management will need to focus on their core brands. They will need to convey quality craftsmanship, unwavering reliability, and treat customer service like a religion. Those who don't *cough*GM*cough* will wallow in mediocrity, blind and confused, until such time as they starve to death.

Oh, and say what you will about the Eagle brand. The Summit, Vision, and Talon might have been rebadged Mitsubishi products, but those egg-shaped 4X4s were truly unique vehicles. :P

Re: Crunk for Junkers

I remember, when I was younger, the feeling that older people thought I was stupid. It started off about individuality, but then transformed into something else. Most of the time, I will edit, re-edit, and then edit again to put my very best foot forward, but sometimes it's not the best thing to do.

I think the point is that, while we might all be able to appreciate the steps taken by those who live in the spotlight, not everyone is interested in being center stage. Just as long as we're on stage, right?

Also, I'm thinking there aren't a lot of models offered in that orange. Curious what your new purchase was? There's nothing wrong with going gray, either. It's far easier to keep clean than, say, a black or white car, so in a sense, it's actually a smart choice of color!

Re: The last “People’s Car”

Whoa. I hadn't thought about that. If China continues as the largest market for ICE-powered vehicles, in time, their demand for oil will exceed global production capacity on its own. It makes sense that they would subsidize the cost of fuel to spur economic development, but I think they will reach a point where their demand exceeds their ability to subsidize the cost. Time will tell.

Even so, an interesting view I hadn't considered. Twitter is a great place to interact globally, but let's move the #carchat itself off Twitter. It's simply not built for it, and I've managed to alienate people who don't understand what looks like drivel to them. Sure, I've disabled FB updates, too, because of my regular Twitter activity.

But, I think the actual, weekly #carchat can thrive off of Twitter. We'll continue to attract new people because many of us still use the hash tag during the week, too.

Re: My thoughts on #carchat: past, present, and future

Love me some carchat. I also agree that the delays and general flakiness of Twitter itself stands as the largest detriment to the conversation. This is frustrating, but in light of of the recent Twitter outage, it seems that maybe we shouldn't be using Twitter as the destination so much as the vehicle that gets us to the communities we're looking for.

The recent DoS hiatus highlighted (for me, anyway) that while there are a number of users who have their own sites, allowing for keeping in touch when/if Twitter is down, there are a number of others who don't. If Twitter goes down for the count, or is bought by Facebook for dismantling, we'd lose touch with a staggering number of people with whom we wouldn't otherwise interact. That's a scary thought. Granted, we lived without Twitter before and could do it again, but to be introduced to so many new voices from across platforms, only to then see those connections vaporize would be sad.

To that end, I'd have no trouble participating in carchat off-Twitter. When you really think about it, Twitter is a place for people to interact almost randomly. If the organized groups would use it to build communities elsewhere, it could optimize the Twitter experience while serving as a solid feeder for new communities.

Right now, there's plenty of pontificating about using Twitter to drive traffic to your business, which is trying to tap into the social media buzz. Imagine the success of communities conceived in Twitter then stepping out into the world on their own? Seems pretty brilliant to me!

Re: Asia Motors Rocsta

Haha.
