Being very young in the early years of the Braves calling Atlanta home, I grew up thinking Hank was all power. It wasn't until I gained an appreciation for the game that I understood what a fantastic all around player he was. A lifetime .305 average demonstrates the consistency and to think it was all accomplished in the face of the racial issues of the time. He is a gentleman and a true ambassador for the game and the city. Finally, the class he showed as Barry Bonds pursued and broke his HR record was welcome and a model for humility in this age.

Re: A Ballad for Armando Galarraga

I couldn't agree more. There are instances when a mistake can't be corrected... But this one could. History is full of outcomes dictated by human error and it is part of the game. Instances where the call was in question or one made at a point in the game where play continued becomes part of the fabric of that game. These can't be undone.

This game was different. Armando Galarraga clearly threw the 21st perfect game in history. Technology proved what the players on the field knew. The mistake was admitted. Only one uneventful play occurred after "the call" that needed to be erased from the books. No different than the plays in a rain out, before being an declared "official game".

Why this game and not others? Because it could be corrected, and in my opinion, should be. This is an injustice that could be made right.

Re: Cards from the Diamond

I can still hear the "Ronnie Gant" "Ronnie Gant" "Ronnie Gant" cheer rising from the crowd in old Fulton County Stadium. Play him to pull!! Anyone sitting along the left field line would have had a shot at a foul ball off his bat.

Re: Cards from the Diamond

Rich- Thanks for the post. I checked out your sandlot baseball blog and had a rush of memories. Shagging fly balls was something the neighborhood kids did continuously. Sometimes we would get a few kids together and play a variation of the typical shagging exercise called "hit the bat". The batter would toss it up and hit as high and deep possible. Whoever caught the fly (and it had to be caught clean) would throw the ball home. The batter would lay the bat across home plate and if the throw "hit the bat", the fielder would take a turn at the plate. This gave everyone a shot at hitting, allowed practice throwing and added another competitive element. Thanks for the flashback!

Re: Life is Short. Funny, Carlin passing brought on the same regret for me.. sorry I missed him live. He was one of my favorite comedians and I shared many of his points of view.

This is the second time I've waited too late and mourned the lost opportunity. The other time was failing to catch John Lee Hooker live. My list now... I would pay to see Bill Maher in the comedy spectrum. In the music world my list is short. I think it would include Eddie Vedder /Pearl Jam, Radiohead and maybe J.J. Cale.

Thanks for the post... I just had this conversation with my father-in-law over Thanksgiving.

Re: Cards from the Diamond

Always like the Lemmer!

Re: Cards from the Diamond

Memories of baseball seasons past! Because I can't believe Chuck would have blessed this pic! Although I find his commentary entertaining, I still harbor ill feelings due to being cut off by Don with his curly white hair and his matching white Mercedes on I-75 north of the Ted. The incident occurred back in 85 or 86 and yes, I remember. Great pitcher, good broadcaster but no so much of the courteous driver!

Re: Cards from the Diamond

When I first heard of Vida Blue, I thought that was the coolest name ever for an athlete. I was bummin. But then it hit me... The memory of Tech... With the "high school offense"... that plays in a "high school" stadium... going "tween the hedges"... coming from behind and spanking the Dawgs entered my head. A smile returned.
Sweeeeet.

Re: The Big 3 Auto Companies Branding Failure

I think this has nothing to do with branding and everything to do with failed management. The leadership demonstrated by the big three has reflected the same arrogant, narrow minded and out of touch approach revealed as a market weakness decades ago. The writing was on the wall but they failed to respond with products to fit the changing market. Hopping in a hybrid and driving to DC would have a required sensitivity they are so blatantly lacking. Instead, they behave in a manner consistent with who they are... flying cross country in corporate jets, arriving hat in had without even a basic a plan to address the crisis.

No matter how good your PR, advertising, corporate message, Brooks Brothers suit or haircut... In the end, your brand is only as good as the product or service you deliver.

Re: Tonight’s the Night

“Tonight’s the Night” is one of my absolute favorite albums of all time . It has endured for decades in my personal rotation and where as most music is woven with memories of time and place, this piece of work is actually embedded into my life's story. Not sure I can select one, all time favorite... But if I tried, this masterpiece would among the top. You made a number of points that I completely agree with. Baseball has no place indoors being number one. And, while I detest the DH, I love a good Cinderella story. It would be OK with me with if the Phillies tote Commissioner's Trophy back to PA. But if the clock hasn't struck midnight just yet and the Rays could pull off a miracle... I for one won't be sorry to see the streak go to 29.

Re: My Daughter’s First Game Ever

Another cool thing is your daughter will have your post to preserve the memory. With the ease of digital photography, video and sites to archive moments in time, today's kids first game memories will have full color images and detailed descriptions of their experience to reflect upon.
