He's just that blowhard on the end barstool who's wrangled a seat in Congress.

Re: Fong links Obama, Chinese communists

Apparently, Fong's staff has belatedly recognized that these days the only GOP road to Terrace Hill runs through Crazytown. My dad's certainly spinning in his grave if this is even being discussed as realistically possible.

Maybe this time around one of Terry's GRANDkids can get staggering drunk, go on a reckless drive, drift over the center line, kill an elderly couple in the opposite lane, and get off with a fine the equivalent of a parking ticket.

Re: Republican state lawmaker ‘troubled’ by Grassley

"'The last time I read our state Constitution, I was working in the only prescribed body for the making of laws, and lawmakers didn’t vote to legalize homosexual marriages on any day of the session I attended, and I attended them all,' [Sorenson] wrote."

Sorenson went on to confess that he had been drunk that day in fifth grade when the teacher explained our tripartite form of government, in which the judiciary interprets the laws.

"Trippity-trappity-whaaaa??? Judiwhoozus???" Sorenson stammered with sullen, confused eyes. "Does that mean some kind of Jew thing? I sure don't need to understand any of that fancy-ass nonsense to be in the state legislature. Are you some kind of secret Muslo-Socialist, boy?"

When reminded it was all in the state constitution he claimed to have read, Sorenson snapped "'Read' don't mean 'read', you idjit. Short of a barnyard animal, I would have thought that physically impossible.

Re: Rants builds buzz for gubernatorial bid

"[Rants] is feared on the floor of the House for his mastery of parliamentary procedure."

That's funny, in a way. The late Emil Pavich, a Democratic state rep from Council Bluffs, was also known in the Iowa House for his command of procedure. But although Emil was fiercely and proudly a Democrat to his bones, I've always been told that he was cheerfully willing to help friend or foe with that procedural knowledge, patiently assisting anyone of either party who asked.

Emil was loved and respected on the floor of the House for his mastery of parliamentary procedure. It figures that Rants would choose the other road.

Re: Personal preference is still for adoptions by dual-gender couples, says Harkin

“[Couples] should not be discriminated against whether they are heterosexual, gay or lesbian [...] Still, I guess if everything were equal, my proclivity would be to have a heterosexual couple.”

In effect, Harkin is saying "You shouldn't discriminate against gays and lesbians, but given my druthers I still would."

I'm a supporter of Tom's from way back-- his first campaign coffee in his first campaign was in my family's living room, and I leafletted for him when I was twelve-- but every now and then he says something I think is bass-ackward, and this is one of those times.

Multiple studies and multiple medical professional associations have concluded that children raised by same-sex couples turn out just as well on average as do kids raised by different-sex couples.

Any "proclivity" Tom still feels against adoption agencies placing kids with same-sex couples isn't a "proclivity", it's a lingering trace of bigotry. Tom doesn't need to have his press flack smear ex poste facto lipstick on that pig, he needs to simply get over it. Mike Gronstal stepped up like a man and did Iowa proud, and Tom should do the same.

I say the above with love, but I'm still saying it.

Re: Grassley proposes flag-burning amendment

I guess this amendment is needed to counter that new fad where everybody in the stadium burns a flag to celebrate a touchdown.

Oh, wait, no. I just completely imagined that fad. Flag-burning virtually never happens in reality, and in any event is functionally indistinguishable from equivalent verbal statements of protest.

So, tell me again why we need to amend the United States Constitution to prevent something that virtually never occurs and doesn't actually cause any real harm when it does?

Re: King attacks Obama’s upbringing as unpatriotic

After the smack King talked about my Brothers (and Sisters) in Arms, I thought I was being rather restrained. Regular Joe's comment was excessive-- but far less so than yours about child molestation. You should be a little ashamed of that outburst.

But to return to the subject that began this thread, the fact remains that King's comment was malicious nonsense and nothing more. When King is looking for something provocative to bellow to a partisan crowd, he rarely wastes much thought on whether what he's saying bears any resemblance to the truth.
