Do you feel like these clients really get it, or are they just trying to do the community buzzword thing? It reminds me of the time I was in a Radio Shack during high school when a lady came in asking for a "multimedia" for her son's computer. She didn't know what it was, but it was all he talked about, so she wanted to buy him a multimedia. Gotta get us some of that community now too, eh?

Re: Jobs Update - tons of new, tasty community positions open!

Good point. Building community ain't easy... I was shocked to see one of the listings local to me for a science museum was only paying $32-$35k for this role. I'm not convinced they understand the difference between community builder and website builder / script kiddie.

Re: Jobs Update - tons of new, tasty community positions open!

It's a good question. At this point, I think there are enough people in the biz that you could safely ask for that.

That said, I don't think most companies are thinking about the realities of such a person - they're expensive and hard to find. One of the things I've always hated about job descriptions (for any position) is that they dial up the "hoped for" items and title them as "requirements". Blech.

Re: Jobs Update - tons of new, tasty community positions open!

I'm wondering how long the title "Online Community Manager" has been around? Several of these postings require 3 or more years experience in such a role.
